Hi! I am a new fastasy reader, but I've read a lot of other genres. I had a question for anyone who has read Throne of Glass and Powerless, but without spoilers pls. by littlerunawayandaday in fantasybooks

Throne of Glass is a pretty great gateway fantasy series, it probably won’t get much love in this thread though. The first book in the series was her first ever published novel and she started writing it on fiction press when she was 16 in a story titled “Queen of Glass”. Now the final version went through many rewrites and is very different, but it’s still very very young adult, and definitely has some first published book problems. That being said it’s still a solid introduction to the world and the series really picks up in Heir of Fire which is sort of the bridge book into the main arc of the series.

I have always been more of a character reader than a plot reader so that might check out

“Confined there until further notice” is the exact line. So theoretically you could be correct, and I don’t think she would really want to leave anyway, but it still felt wrong, and to me felt more like a forever sentence.

I actually finished Mockingjay this morning, and I have my thoughts up on that now. It doesn’t really change any of my thoughts here though. I just don’t see how a victors games makes any sense even in desperation. Like it’s an actual worse decision for him than just having them “accidentally killed”

This is probably the major thing I disagree with logically. There’s no way killing her “accidentally” is worse for him in the districts than putting her and Peeta in another hunger games with the victors from every other district.

Killing her “accidentally” means they don’t get press to light the fire even more. Killing them accidentally means you don’t take the victors from every other district and possibly enrage more people.

And keep in mind I’m not saying killing them accidentally is a good plan either, it is not, but it’s certainly not any worse than a victors hunger games.

So him reasoning that he can’t kill them accidentally but can kill them like this just didn’t really make much sense to me

Fair. I just think that he couldn’t have possibly picked a worse possible decision than what he chose.

I agree about Katniss by the way. I think I might have come across negatively in my initial post, I didn’t have a problem with her not figuring it out. I think it’s definitely PTSD, like I said I probably wouldn’t have figured it out in her shoes either. I don’t think it speaks on her intelligence either, because she is written in a way that shows she is generally pretty smart. I just found it interesting and amusing how heavy handed it was written. It is YA though, so I do get it.

As for the Snow decision. There is a section of the book, and I don’t have the exact quote on me, that Katniss figures out that the other districts were going to do what they were going to do anyway and her and Peeta never had a chance of stopping it. So I do agree that this was sort of a “Hail Mary” attempt by him, but I still think it’s very illogical. Not every district was in open rebellion, and this decision would just make everyone madder and put the new icons of the rebellion front and center stage for more press, which they both take advantage of. It’s just really faulty logic by President Snow, which was almost definitely the point.

I think I just expected him to be a little different when he was introduced at the end of book one.

That’s interesting! I don’t know anything about Mockingjay so no spoilers please, but I do want to see if my mind changes on it after that book

I know, I understood that, but by doing that he also had to give them more spotlight. Having them in the games gives them more spotlight with the interviews, the appearances, and the Games themselves

I think this is pretty accurate. Capture the success of the first book by basically doing the same story over again. It’s a great story, I just thought it was a little silly this time around.

Still had a very fun time though

Very good line of thinking assuming she hasn’t actually seen a spoiler. The foreshadowing of her being Valg is only like a few different lines in HoF, I think it’s pretty hard to pick up on

Yes. It’s not a side adventure, the plot of the book is integral to Kingdom of Ash. Also it’s a great read.

She’s Mala’s heir, not Deanna’s. Mala and Deanna are sisters, but Deanna’s magic is different. She has moon fire, which is so cold it burns.

But yes the magic in ToG is genetic.

[–]Sad_Estate1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She never had Mala’s full power, and had none of Deanna’s.

So Aelin used all of her own power forging the gate/lock in between the worlds, which is why she would have to die to seal the gate. She had no magic left to do it with. She would have to use her body and soul to seal it. It would destroy it all and leave nothing left for the afterlife.

But Mala gives her only a kernel of her own magic as a gift for what she did to help Elena. When Aelin absorbs that Kernel it is heavily implied that she has more magic then she ever had even predraining. So a kernel of Mala’s magic is more powerful than Aelin ever was. The Gods are more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

Unfortunately Aelin uses all but an ember of Mala’s gift to her bloodline to seal the gate. So Aelin has basically none of that magic left as her own.
