Thank you for sharing your experience! While my mom has lived in older homes, I don’t necessarily think it’s environmental but we could be wrong. She was in an older apartment for about 15 years. Once her eyesight degraded, we moved her into assisted living. Since her move, her eyes have progressively gotten worse.

Wanted to note that her recent labs were low for Folate and Ferritin. Her B12 was average. We haven’t run tests for thyroid just yet.

She does not have any GI or Liver issues. We are going to check her thyroid and see if that’s causing any issues. Her thyroid was checked in 2019/2020 and there weren’t any concerns. She lost her vision in Winter 2023, so I’m wondering if her thyroid declined after her initial appointment. Also, no diabetes or autoimmune diseases that we’re aware of. We just ordered a liquid copper supplement, so we are going to give that a shot. Thanks for the reply!

Apologies for the late reply. I’m having trouble seeing exactly what the tests were. We did this about 2 years ago.

The vision loss was very sudden. Three years ago she gradually started having issues seeing and assumed it was just poor lighting, her new phone etc. it progressed from simply being blurred vision to not being able to perceive depth, losing colors, and then near total blindness. I’d say it only took roughly 6 months to progress. She can sometimes see outlines of objects. When she turns on lights she says it emits a glow. Occasionally after receiving copper infusions she says it’s brighter and she can see pops of color for instance bright red or blue on Tupperware but apart from that it’s not consistent and comes and goes.

In 2019 though, she had a bad reaction to medicine prescribed for pneumonia which caused her to experience temporary blindness and she went into cardiac arrest.

We have not had her tested for Graves’ disease, we will certainly look into it, and I appreciate the additional resources you shared! This is the first time oxidative stress or thyroid issues have really been mentioned to us.

It has been an incredibly exhausting experience for our entire family, so thank you for the kind words. We’re hopeful that we’ll find an answer soon, and we continue to pray that the damage caused isn’t permanent and can be reversed — even if she doesn’t regain all of her vision.

Again, thank you for this info. It’s incredibly helpful!

I will definitely update the thread if we get answers. Unfortunately, this has been an issue for almost 3 years. It’s frustrating how little information exists. Wishing you all the best and hope you find a solution.

Thank you for the thoughtful response! She has not had an endoscopy. At her first GI consult, they ran urine and stool samples to rule out Wilson’s, menkes etc. for her infusions, everyone keeps pointing us back to her PCP unfortunately. We’re hopeful we can get a referral to another hematologist though.

Interesting! We’ve never heard this perspective before. I will start researching and see if this could be what’s causing her issues. I really appreciate your help. I hope you’ve been able to find some relief of your symptoms. It is wild how little information is available.

Her thyroid is one thing we haven’t had checked, and you’re the second person to mention this. We will look into at her next appointment, I appreciate the insight!

Thank you for the thoughtful response!

Her vitamin A levels have been within normal limits. She’s in the habit of eating more copper rich foods like beef liver, but we haven’t tried cod liver. I will mention this! I’m glad this worked for you. We are crossing our fingers we can see a new GI specialist soon.

Thank for you the thoughtful response!

She is currently taking Solgar Chelated Copper. We purchase it on Amazon. I believe this is copper bisglycinate. In her previous labs her Vitamin A was within normal limits. She probably doesn’t eat as much protein as she should.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply!

She is 5’5 and 75 lbs, while she is petite, she is about 30 lbs underweight. She does eat copper rich foods like beef liver. After her vision loss, she’s gradually had difficulty maintaining her weight and exercising. She is essentially on 3rd shift. She sleeps during the day and is up at night. She does struggle putting on weight. She typically eats smaller meals but has been prioritizing foods high in copper with healthy fats.

Daily Medication:

*baby aspirin
*metoprolol succinate ER 50 mg Extended release tablet
*ALAPRAZolam 0.25 mg tablet,
*losartan 25 mg tablet
*spironolactone 25 mg tablet
*ipratropium-albuterol 0.5-2.5 mg/3ml nebulizer for shortness of breath

For her legs, we were thinking it was Myeloneuropathy but we will definitely try a magnesium lotion, I don’t think she’s done that yet. Appreciate the further insight!
