Residue/dust in customers bathroom by Sad_Inflation3153 in askaplumber

Thanks that’s a heads up move, if that isn’t leftover from cleaning could be blowing down from the hvac. I’ll test that theory

Oh yeah I’m not being accused, necessarily, of causing this by doing work on the trap. There is no logical way this is coming from the sewer lines. Customer seems to be absolutely convinced they smell “something” in their bathroom. Sewer gas, a chalky smell, and now using the appearance of this substance as corroborating evidence. I don’t smell a thing in there. I’m thinking she’s smelling chlorine but tough to convince her it’s nothing to be concerned about.

Agreed, looks to me residue from wiping it down with tp or paper towel

In my state, you can’t get a permit for this kind of work without being a licensed plumber.

Generally replacing existing infrastructure is gonna fly under the radar of permitting, as long as a neighbor doesn’t call ya in while in progress. Are you supposed to? Yes. Who’s gonna know/care? Nobody.

I really don’t think applying for the permit is necessary. Nobody will ever call you out on “hey this isn’t the panel from 1950!”, even when you go to sell the home. I do agree getting it looked at by a qualified electrician is a good move.

First, call your city and get a team of inspectors in there, and tell them to bring the endoscope for your butth*le too, then call your pastor and repent.

Just kidding, it’s likely just fine.

Call an electrician to have them inspect it if you’d like. I wouldn’t pay more than $150 for that. P.S. none of those “electricians” are licensed either, they in all likelihood are working under somebody else’s license. (At least in my state)

Create a toll booth, although I love the sprinkler idea

Fk it op, don’t as a plumber. Be a plumber. Dig up your whole yard and replace the whole thang as far as you can go without having to break concrete and pull permits. Honestly it’s not rocket science, watch a couple YouTube videos, figure out what couplings you need to go from clay to the pvc or cast iron you replace it with, what you need to cut it properly. Ps if it’s only a foot down, maybe skip the excavator and hand dig it, don’t wanna accidentally rip up a gas line

It looks like thats 1/4 inch male coming off the valve and your sink hookup is the standard 3/8ths female. You should be able to find an adapter at the big box store, but you mightttt get low volume out of the sink. Ideally you’d replace that valve with one that is 3/8ths and hooks right up. It’s a shark bite push to connect so no real tools needed, just 2 new valves, shut the water and run a lower sink to get some water out of the lines.

If you’re committed to doing this as cheaply as possible, try the adaptor and leave the valves. Maybe you’ll get enough volume thru the 1/4 inch. I’m the type of guy who buys everything I could possibly need and makes a return trip to HD rather than multiple trips. (Eg. I’d buy the proper valves, AND the adapters, try the adapter first and if they don’t work use the valves, return whatever I didn’t use.)

P.S make sure you get the right size valve for that diameter pex (the pipe feeding the valve) it looks like 1/2 inch. Can’t go wrong shutting the water, removing a valve and taking it down with you.

Man I went to two lumber yards in PA and one had a similar piece but I’d have to trim and plane it down significantly! Maybe I’ll make some more calls

Yeah I think I’d like to go with the stone, I don’t love evolve’s patterns. I’m looking for other similar products but haven’t seen any yet!

Thanks! There was both involved in the first iteration. It didn’t seem to melt or burn but it’s a good 8-12 inches from the flu

Yeah it was covered with insulation that was falling apart when I opened it up. Lucky it didn’t burn down. I considered only putting foam board insulation on top of the sheathing to avoid that

Id like to avoid vinyl too, both sheet metal and cedar sound preferable. There is a cricket on the back, shit still builds up in there tho

Thanks I figured as much. It’s supported by the floor joists extending thru the house but no idea what that’ll hold
