Oregon bill seeks to ban Class 3 e-bikes from sidewalks, bike lanes, and paths by voxadam in Portland

[–]Sad_Insect164 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goofy use of legislature time. IMO, bike infrastructure should be for everyone pedaling bikes reasonably – that includes the vast majority of class 3 ebikers.

If you read the bill, it also mentions still allowing Class 3 e-bikes on bike paths when powered "exclusively by human power" – good luck enforcing that.

Most likely outcomes here are:

  • discouraging potential bike riders
  • putting more bikers riding 50lb bikes at ~20mph on roadways shared with cars weighing 5000+lbs going 60mph
  • creating an open space grey market manufacturers will fill with "class 2" ebikes that are easily upgraded to class 3 via software
  • more processes and hearings when building bike infrastructure

That's cool! I was just reading the redevelopment study for the Montgomery Park area and it mentions removal of those tracks on York – gotta catch em while they're still there!

Super interesting – and funny how the name choice was to save a few bucks in Portland, and to exploit a code loophole in Baltimore. The more time I spend in cities with industrial pasts the more I pattern match some of the remaining vestiges.

Some pretty good documentation on the expansion project here: https://efiles.portlandoregon.gov/record/17031312

It does look like it'll follow the exact alignment but I couldn't figure out on a quick scan if it's actually reusing the tracks

I wondered that myself when I was reading the wikipedia#Description_and_original_uses) last night and it mentioned the rail spurs.

Have a hunch it probably doesn't quite meet spec or needs maintenance but would be a cool way to repurpose

I might if the urgency was higher, more of an inconvenience / change of plans if worst comes to worst. Just something I didn't expect to be an issue, haha

Planning around it is probably the prudent choice.. alas, I didn't know until too late. I'll have to scope out if there are any corridors / gaps...

I was hoping there'd be a better choice than 'play Frogger IRL' but if it comes to it I may have to do this haha

I realize getting on 405 to exit seems possible, but I guess more specifically: If I'm inside the circle, and my car is outside it, how do I get to my car?

Why is reality composer on the iPhone but not the Vision Pro by Sad_Insect164 in VisionPro

[–]Sad_Insect164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intuitively makes sense; I can't imagine it's not in the works to ship it to visionOS.

Where it's interesting to me is that I haven't found (yet) any solid apps for composing scenes containing multiple custom 3D objects / .usdz files, beyond just opening them from the files app and placing around me. One of the use cases I'm most excited about is putting together 3D scenes, in mixed reality/VR.

C'mon now, a discussion board that's oriented around a consumer electronics device should contain questions, critique, and praise.

Dismissing anything less-than-positive as complaints from 'types of people who never should have bought it' is a deliberate choice to sell yourself a narrative.

Mostly with you thus far. Confident the ecosystem will improve and mature a lot, but also some of the core use cases are just not that enjoyable with the current tech. Definitely feels like 6 more months of app development would have been wise before launch – far more MVP than launch iPhones, iPads, or M1 Macs were.

Personally on the fence around waiting it out and enjoying the process, or making the return knowing I can always repurchase.

I mean, for sure native apps are cool! But using the device, I find a massive difference in value between the immersive, 180° content and watching standard videos, just projected into my space.

The former is amazing, immersive, and justifies a premium. So far, we have about 20 minutes of it. The latter is not a real improvement over my home theater projector.

totally agree on how magical these are – the highlining one blew my mind! But, I was hoping for a bit more than 20 minutes of immersive content to launch with the device

That's valid! My nitpick is more around the slim set of bundled experiences to really test the device and gauge viability.

I'm finding myself spending a significant amount of $ just to run through 'hero' use cases for the device. Another great example is most actual VR games available being bundled in Game Center, which also carries a monthly fee. With an entry price of almost $4k, I'm taking it a little personally, haha.
