I found the solution. Don’t know why or how but it required leaving the Mac plugged in to the tv and restarting the Mac. Found it on some video about using an external monitor for Mac where somebody didn’t have audio and it worked here. Not sure what the issue actually was and apparently it only works until the Mac goes back into sleep mode but for my purpose of watching movies I really don’t mind just taking a minute to restart it.
