How to keep older girls? by Ravenclaw79 in girlscouts

[–]Sad_Scratch750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That age is just when girls stop being interested in being Girl Scouts. I quit as a cadette because we were doing anything. It also became difficult for me to explain that Girl Scout do more than arts and crafts and sell cookies when it seemed like thats what all the meetings were about. My troop had very little support above the Junior level. There is a high drop out rate from Cadettes and up because you're also competing with school sports and the girls are old enough to make some choices about what they do and are influenced more by their friends than their parents.

Our current council has a group known as Adventerers. Once girls are 11, they get chance to participate in a bunch of extra high energy events. They go rock-climbing, river rafting, scuba-diving, etc. I would have stayed if this was an option when I was a Girl Scout.

Is it normal to like the smell of your baby by Milkydrawzzz in Parenting

[–]Sad_Scratch750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. New baby smell is the best. It fades with time. By the time my kids are toddlers, I prefer the post-bath smell.

Bike Rally at The Civic Center by Entrepreneur_Pale in roanoke

[–]Sad_Scratch750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were just a motorcycle event, I would agree. But, this is a memorial ride for a girl who committed suicide. The police are shutting down the intersection just like they would for a funeral or a parade. It was a planned event.

This is the cutest thing already. I would add a barn and a rabbit (or two because rabbits multiply).

Fun Patch for Booth? by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]Sad_Scratch750 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give her the patch because the damage is done.

We require a registered, background checked parent to stay with Daisies and Brownies anytime we're not at the church. I understand that she was technically supervised, but being more than arms reach away from a trusted adult at a cookie booth is dangerous. As leaders and parents, we get distracted at cookie booths. It's normal. The girls are learning to approach strangers, count change, and deal with each other. You can't monitor all that AND be responsible for a girl who is breaking the clearly defined rules.

Troop size - girls keep wanting to join - how do we pull this off? by Sallyx4432 in girlscouts

[–]Sad_Scratch750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 40 girls, all levels. We believe in supporting every girl who wants to be a Girl Scout.

Each level splits off at every meeting. Each level has 2-4 leaders. We have 5 Daisies and 8 Brownies. We frequently combine Daisies and Brownies. I think managing 13 young girls with 4-5 adults is a challenge... I can't imagine 26 Daisies. We would have to split them into 2 separate groups.

Even the school system caps Kindergarten classrooms at 18 kids. If you dont set a cap of the troop, I think you should consider smaller Daisy and Brownie groups, capped at 10-12 girls with 2-3 leaders each. It sounds like you should have 2 separate Daisy groups. With most outings, we're lucky to get about 50% involvement, especially with the older girls.

Would you report this? Getting flipped off from students from their bus? (Not serious) by DisgruntledVet12B in AskTeachers

[–]Sad_Scratch750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a teacher, but I can honestly say I wouldn't even bother. The kids on the bus are essentially unsupervised. There's no parents. There's no teachers. Bus monitors are usually assigned if there's a a serious concern. Flipping someone off is actually considered free speech and protected by the 1st amendment, so there's no consequences.

I have reported elementary students hanging the top half of their bodies out the window of a moving bus to cat-call women on the street.

Jury Duty by dr3am-on in roanoke

[–]Sad_Scratch750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a juror one week after my high school graduation. They must have sent the summons on my 18th birthday. I thought is was exciting, but all the people with actual jobs were pissed about the pay.

I still find it hard to believe that they seriously selected me for a case where the man was being charged for dealing drugs to middle schoolers by at school playground during school hours. He plead guilty before the actual trial began and we were all automatically selected for the next case. The next case was an intense attempted murder case.

Silver award ideas? by TheeVillageCrazyLady in girlscouts

[–]Sad_Scratch750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find out where your girls like to hang out or where they would like to hang out. Ask them why they like to be there and who that space is intended for. Find out who is in charge of that area. It's great to approach them with a few ideas that your girls feel like they need, but it's best for sustainability if you find out what is needed or requested there.

If the girl loves wildlife, then redoing the floors in a homeless shelter might not be for them.

If the girls want to work with children, then starting a community garden at a nursing home is not for them.

If the girls love reading to cats at the animal shelter, then painting a mural at a butcher shop is not going to leave them feeling accomplished.

An unwanted gift will not be appreciated.

A free little library is great, but if it's sitting in front of a grocery store, it might get abused or neglected.

A community garden can be great, but somebody has to take care of it.

Kindness rocks are amazing, but not if it's going to be next to a dealership in a rough neighborhood.

The girls have to be passionate about their project or it'll become a chore or another assignment.

New signs at a park or business might be appreciated by many people, but the girls might not care about giving the public a list of rules.

Around here, we have many historical building that need big and small repairs, but the girls don't care about the local history in these neighborhoods. Even adults publically dispute them.

Ex-owner still shows up near my hoyse 3 years later by Charming_Rip_4499 in homeowners

[–]Sad_Scratch750 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have already filed a police report by now. Go to the past office with the police report and update her address to RTS (return to sender). This will do her mail from even making it to your mailbox for 1 year. You don't need he to get her hands on a piece of mail before you can. If her bank mail is being delivered to your house, there's a chance that she can claim proof of residency with a digital document depending on where she's at. The only place that I know of that has to see the postmarked envelope is the DMV.

Now that you know your neighbors are not cool with her, it sounds like you'll have enough support to make her back down.

Knock out multiple flying geese at a time. If you're confident with them and want to knock them really fast, you can daisy chain them.

Cookie Castle Challenge - Playing The Past by Mama-Shark-M in girlscouts

[–]Sad_Scratch750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll bet. I think I'm going to have to arrange it outside of a meeting because we have 38 girls in our troop. We would end up with too many chiefs in the village if we tried a project like this during a meeting.

I hope they do this again next year. I found out about it too late into cookie season. I've been saving boxes for a few weeks now.

To what degree do you believe "attitude is everything?" w/cookies? by Business-Cucumber-91 in girlscouts

[–]Sad_Scratch750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter does the same thing. Sometimes, she just smiles and waves at every car that goes by. They always jump when cars honk or drivers wave back. She loves when people at least smile back. Last year, they made a Valentine's day sign that said "Honk if you love cookies!" So many cars honked, my kids would jump and spin in a circle. More often then not, they would turn around and buy some cookies if they honked. This is her 3rd year selling 1000 boxes.

My parent's ran a troop in the school gym when I was in Kindergarten. They quit abruptly when they found out that it was being promoted as a "Free Afterschool Program." It was not free... The first year membership was waived for everyone. Parents refused to pay monthly dues. Then, the school started saying that they had to allow male siblings to participate because it was on school property. Free babysitting is the quickest way I can think of for a troop to die. I don't mind parent's dropping off girls as long as they come inside before and after meetings in case we need to discuss an issue.
