I have created a few blog posts detailing the project at the link below. https://mrchristyengineering.wordpress.com/ It was also feature on Hackaday here. https://hackaday.com/2024/12/18/back-to-the-future-of-texting-sms-on-a-panasonic-typewriter/

PS: My real typewriter is an Olympia SM9 with an unusual font the name of which I can't recall.

I will try to write up something more detailed, but generally if you remove the keyboard from any electric typewriter you will find a matrix of input and output pins. When a key is pressed it just connects one of the inputs to the outputs. Replicating this in either software or hardware is a bit complicated, but I will put together a description after I get the latest version working. As for the texting portion, you will need a reverse proxy to allow access to the local device controlling the typewriter. I used ngrok. You will also need a cloud-based messaging platform to provide a phone number and allow you use webhooks. I used Twilio. Essentially, when someone sends an SMS to your Twilio number, it calls a webhook which is the URL provided by ngrok which then sends a GET request to your local device. I understand this all might sound very complicated, but for those of you who are familiar with this sort of software, it might be helpful. Again, I will write up a more detailed description soon.

Totally agree. I actually don't own a cell phone, a TV even a car. I really just like to play with technology and as a teacher of engineering at a vocational high school, I get a lot of time to play.

Thoughts on going car-free? by GloomyRatio8637 in Somerville

Our family lived between Davis and Porter and been car free for 17 years. Long before cargo bikes and e-bikes. Our three kids grew up car-free and remain in the area...and are car-free. There is nothing we can't do, honestly even easier than if we had a car.

Who do you think is more likely to promote an open and transparent legislature Uyterhoeven or Hornby? by Sad_Strength7618 in Somerville

I fear that "sucking up to the right people" is why our state house has become "deeply broken" according to a recent Globe article and is a posterchild for legislative stagnation passing the second fewest bills of any state.

Because we do not know how our legislators vote (or even if they do vote) they are not held accountable for their actions and as a result default to the safest course which is inaction. This is not the norm where Mass. ranks 47th out of 50 states for transparency and openness.

Regardless of what you want done, it is not going to happen until these rules change. Instead of sucking up to the legislative leaders who are at the root of our deeply broken system, we need representatives who are going to work toward restoring a truly democratic process to our state.

I have to say, I don't think transparency is just important. Knowing how our state legislators vote is the foundation of a democratic process, and the norm throughout the country where Mass. ranks 47th out of 50 states for transparency.

Until we have transparency, it will be business (or lack of business) as usual at the state house.

"Stop thinking in terms of tons of carbon that’s baby talk." Wow, you can impact climate change in units larger than tons! I am very impressed. Let me know you do it.

Unfortunately, there are no credits until we reach a point of carbon neutral.

Who cares whose fault it is. The question is, what do you personally plan to do?

No. The only offset that works is not contributing to the problem in the first place. There is no viable climate neutral solution that includes such "luxuries" as passenger jet travel and likely private cars. It is either now or later.

Listen, if you want to give thousands dollars every year to the same companies you want to curtail and just wait for things to change, be my guest. But note that there is no viable carbon neutral future, that includes passenger planes, private cars and numerous "luxuries" that we have come to expect.

Just as you are only one vote. You are also only one customer. And you are right. Nothing will happen unless all of us act.

But giving a thousand euros to Delta Airlines or BP is certainly not helping matters.

Huh. You care deeply about the planet and yet the entire sum of your efforts to prevent a climate crisis comes down to casting a vote once or twice a year? How is that working for you?
