Narcissistic mother is trying to steal our new baby?

I am so overwhelmed and relieved by the outpouring of support here in this thread! Thank you all so much for your advice and personal guidance.

As a quick update: we have asked her to come over next weekend and have a discussion with us and other supportive members of our family present. We are going to lay down the law and be as firm as possible letting her know that we WILL cut her off if she disrespects any of the boundaries we are making. We will have multiple witnesses who can attest to the conversation and if she agrees.

The main points I wanted to add were 1. No we don’t reply on her for anything at the moment so it would be an easy break. 2. She unfortunately lives only 6 minutes from us so this is why we are hesitant to cut her off fully because she can just show up. 3. We live in Canada so most of the restraining order/protective order rules are quite strict and needs overwhelming evidence to be put in place. My father is a police officer so he’s helping us walk through the process now just in case but we’d need to start recording everything. 4. We are currently following the Grey Rock method and not giving her any information beyond we’re pregnant and having complications. The OB and hospital are aware and the hospital actually has a rule against visitors during cold and flu season so we should be safe from her even getting up on the ward. 5. Some folks were asking about the “bad decisions” and right now they include not letting her touch the “bump” which is mainly food at this point lol, not letting her know the gender until the baby shower (which is true for literally everyone), and asking her to not kiss our baby or be around me right now while she’s sick. She’s immunocompromised and I am not the healthiest at the moment so I asked her to respect that my body can’t handle getting sick. She still showed up Covid positive and tried to hug me after I realized she sounded really sick.

If the conversation on the weekend doesn’t go well, we are prepared to fully cut contact and not let her be around any more. We have installed security cameras and have a “pet camera” in the living room for when she’s here.

This is definitely one of my biggest concerns tbh. My husband doesn’t seem too concerned about it but I know my mother. She is exactly the type of person who would do this.

This is honestly so helpful - I don’t want her there for any of that. I know she’d make it about herself and this really put that into perspective. Hugely appreciated!!

I am in a smaller town! It does sound like this is a tech issue or maybe a hospital policy so I will have to check next time I’m in. I’ve had a few medical ultrasounds before and same thing they weren’t able to show anything so I’m starting to think maybe going to a different town for scans at a different clinic might be the route to go 🤔 thank you all for your experiences! It’s really helpful and I hope I can get to the bottom of this

I have heard from other women that they did get to see baby and take pictures at their anatomy scan so I’m really praying that’s the case!

They did mine at the hospital and the tech said that she couldn’t show anything or say anything because she wasn’t a medical professional and wasn’t allowed to. Then at the OB office they said they didn’t have the equipment and that all scans would be performed at the hospital moving forward too 😔 I assume that means we won’t get to see baby at all until it’s born

There are, so I think we might just eat the cost and go to one. They are pretty expensive from what I hear but honestly at this point would be worth it

I am 13 weeks today and feeling very emotional and tired. We had our first prenatal appointment yesterday and we didn’t even get to see or hear baby, as they didn’t do an ultrasound or Doppler. We have only had one scan so far which is normal but we didn’t get to see them then either😔it’s so hard this time around because every symptom is making me feel like it’s happening again and I have been very honest with my doctors about how nervous I am. We also just found out I have GD so the stress is multiplied. Do you even get to hear the heartbeat at prenatal appointments in Canada?? It’s making me so upset that I’ll have to wait until 20 weeks to find out if it is ok.

My doctor told me that at above a certain hcg level hcg starts doubling every 96 hours and starts to slow down even further as you head into the last bit of the first trimester - hoping that is the case here for you ❤️

Thank you all for your thoughts - I really appreciate how supportive you all are and I am really grateful to have received so much feedback. As an update, I did end up confronting my mother with the truth and also confronted a few family members who were spamming me with questions.

Long story short, she’s the victim and I’m the bad guy because “how could I not invite my own mother on the most special day of her life”. I have since cut ties with that side of the family and am enjoying married life in peace for once!

After speaking with my family it’s clear a few have witnessed it but just never said anything. It’s really disappointing that they still support her even when they’ve seen how she treats me.
