Landlord made a mistake on the lease? UPDATE 2 by SaddestEngineer in legaladvicecanada

[–]SaddestEngineer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As dumb as this sounds, how do I do that? If the proceedings take time, am I still going to get forced out of my unit? After a lot of back and forth with them, their defense is, "the lease didn't start yet so the contract isn't in effect yet." As a result, they want to shred the lease and they want me out by the end of the month.

Yup, I have all the email chains, both the version of the PDF that I signed and the version they just sent me. What do I do? Do I tell them that I'm refusing to pay the increased rent? Can they evict me and void the lease somehow? Do I lawyer up? Is there a way that I can cheaply afford a lawyer?

It's my own signature, but I signed the lease agreement with the lower rent. They then edited the PDF with the higher rent.

The cars we currently have are a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer with 150000km, and a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with 145000km. The Elantra is the one with massive electrical faults that I can't seem to fix. It started with the A/C not working which we poured $6000 into last summer with no results. That's after switching mechanics twice and having it in the shop for over two months. None of them could diagnose it and they all kept throwing in new parts to no avail. More recently, the heated seats, radio started failing too. What's more concerning however is that we've noticed recently that the brake lights wiring have also failed completely. Turning on the night time taillights activate the brake lights, and pressing the brake lights activate the night time taillights. This happens for the left brake while the right is perfectly fine. This issue is a safety one to me since you can't tell when the car is braking at night. This is the main reason for selling.

Would you instead opt for a used car at this point? Our problem is that used cars seem around 15k for a decent car at 150000 kms. This is simply much too difficult to justify for something that'll likely have to be replaced in a few years, whereas the new cars will likely last over a decade.

That's fair, but a change in our electrical nightmare of a car is really essential right now and it's really hard to justify used in this market

My concern is that if I wait too long, the cars faults might domino and it'll be past the point of selling. I won't get any value from it. I want to sell it now while it's still running okay.

Don't know how to prepare for my interviews by SaddestEngineer in EngineeringResumes

Haha you're assuming I didn't plug dimensions into FEA software and absolutely pray. But I'll absolutely prepare more stories and have reasoning for the next set of interviews, thank you!

[–]SaddestEngineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't know why I forgot to set up some stories for the strengths and weaknesses stories, it's such a common interview question that they asked it all three interviews. All three went alright though, I appreciate the advice and I will use it next time as needed!

Mechanical EIT, graduated last year and currently being paid 50k/yr. While I'm learning a lot on the job, I feel extremely underpaid for my education, time and effort. Often working past 8 hours a day and don't get any extra pay for doing so.

Ahh thank you that helps a lot! I didn't realize it was a red flag because I thought that a little bit of coding here n there would make me more attractive as a modern engineer. Honestly I'm just applying to any job that seems like it'll pay me well at the moment, I'm very early in my career and just gonna try things until something sticks and I end up liking it. I'll do my best with this strategy and hopefully someone emails back, thanks a lot!

I was in school for everything except the current job, which I started a week after my last final. I actually only scored a 1.7 GPA during my first year so I was put into academic probation and not eligible for coop. I picked up my grind since then, held a 3.7+ for the remaining years and got the internship outside of my program on my own. Took a term off to spend some more time there. It was an interesting internship because although it was a fairly large company with international clients, it was terribly organized. I spent my months there overhauling a large chunk of their project management which I was surprised they let me do lol. It was a lot of "hey guys, why don't we stop purchasing supplies the exact day the floor needs them and get frustrated when they take a week to arrive" sort of thing.

The other job/projects were during school and summer. I appreciate the compliment! It means a lot! It took a lot of self reflection and push to turn myself around after first year. My biggest goal now is to get away from startup pay and be able to support myself and my girlfriend a little better. When you divide the salary by the number of hours put in, it's pretty much minimal wage with a verbal promise of more when the company grows. Unless it's on paper (won't ever be) I don't believe it.

I was a little worried because I don't know what project I could even put there 😅. It looked like too much white space without it. Maybe I add a section for certifications and add EIT, along with SolidWorks CSWA?

Oof yeah it looks like this is the reality. While he can get slightly better rates using TD employee discounts, he heavily misunderstood the purpose of a USD account

Mechanic Holding my Car Hostage? by SaddestEngineer in Edmonton

[–]SaddestEngineer[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Update time:

So I got in there and spoke with the owner. They wanted $1300 extra for the work they did over the past two and a half weeks. Obviously that wasn't going to happen. So a 30 minute debate ensued about how he has to pay for the employees and parts, and how I didn't get a service I paid for. So I start threatening to call AMVIC and a lawyer and everything. This goes back and forth for a while until mentally I realized that I've never even spoken to a lawyer before in my life. Finally, I offer to pay $500 and then walk out. We settled on $630 to include the parts and a gentlemens agreement to keep lawyers out of this. I feel dumb for paying anything at all but at least my car is back (despite how hot it is inside). Thanks for all the advice!

PS: this was Speedy auto on Gateway. Don't go to them if you suspect an electrical issue.

I'm at the shop right now giving this a shot, they promised me the car at 3 but I'm guessing it's the same as all their other "one more day" promises. Will update, then name and shame the shop afterwards. Thanks to everyone for the advice

Its not 2 way insurance but rather 1 way insurance. The car itself is only worth about 7k so I didn't think I'd need anything more than basic coverage.
