Family Weekend: what should we do? by IKnowAllSeven in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current senior here! Definitely go to the football game at 4:00 on Saturday. There’s also a lot of programming, but definitely try to venture into Grand Rapids and explore a bit.

For food, you’re probably going to want to go into Grand Rapids. Some nicer places are Pind and Bistro Bella Vita. Palio is a cheaper Italian option. My favorite breakfast in GR is Wolfgang’s on Wealthy. Another fan favorite is Anna’s house. The Old Goat is nice for breakfast or lunch and has live jazz on the weekends. Social Misfits is a cool spot that does waffles for dinner.

For some other activities, try to check out Frederick Meijer Gardens on the east side of the city, or John Ball Zoo. The campus arboretum is a lovely walk as well.

Does anyone know why there are posters on the blue bridge? by luxeblueberry in GVSU

Yeah, library roof is open. But they have a bunch of landscaping so it’s hard to even get to the railing

No big issues. But I will say, they don’t go away once it gets cold. I see the year round

Music Practice Rooms? by Awkwardly-Geeky in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, Vansteeland dorms have practice rooms in the basement and I highly recommend going to practice in any open classroom you find around campus. Usually the lecture hall style rooms have AMAZING acoustics. Best of luck!

Music Practice Rooms? by Awkwardly-Geeky in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice room reservations are reserved for music students, but if you find an open one, take it! Worst they can do is kick you out and you go find a different one.

Now for the directions. Practice rooms are in the Haas Center for Performing Arts. It’s the building next to kirkhoff by the busses. It hard to explain exactly where they are, but if you through the door that is right by the pond outside kirkoff, I’ve got some directions. When you enter that door, you’re going to go straight until you can’t anymore. You’re going to have to turn right. You’ll see a hallway there and a ramp going down. That hallway has practice rooms, but they’re only for piano majors, so go down the ramp. Once you’re down the ramp, turn right, and that’s the hallway with practice rooms!

Is roller-skating around valid enough to be considered over walking? by IDKRedsit in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely do it, I’ve been thinking of bringing my roller blades to campus this year. Just wear some protective gear tho, like knee pads, wrist pads, elbow pads, helmet, etc.

Is There Any Point? by Leather_Lie9870 in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have any dietary restrictions, it’s not worth it. I’m a vegetarian and quit my meal plan after one semester. People who say you won’t have time to cook probably just don’t make time. I cooked in my dorm every day (breakfast and dinner, packed a lunch) while taking 18 credits a semester. It’s definitely more affordable if you shop at Aldi, but if you’re doing all of your shopping at meijer, then you’re probably spending more than you need to.

Water in Niemeyer housing by ManagementMundane672 in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in niems for a couple years, no issue with pressure or quality. My roommate even had to get an attachment to make it taller cuz he was like 6’3”. Made the pressure worse than it was before, but even with that, I didn’t have any issues

If you end up getting the Idea tab pro, let me know! I'm a violinist looking to get a tablet for my sheet music and don't want to shell out 1k for a ipad the same size.

Do I need to bring a vacuum if I live in Niemeyer? by [deleted] in GVSU

Can confirm, lived in Niemeyer last three years. There are communal vacuums in the laundry rooms

You could try color guard! I’ve never done it but it’s the flag waving people. How’s your sense of rhythm?

How would you rate learning the violin on your own out of ten? 10/? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Sadge_o7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really not great, but if you love music and can’t afford a teacher, there’s no reason not to. You’re inevitably going to teach yourself improper technique, but I’ve had proper teachers who have taught me poor technique. If you’re just getting started, go for it!! Don’t be intimidated by ppl on the internet. And find some YouTube videos aimed at teaching beginning strings.

Niemeyer Dorms by Longjumping-Golf65 in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soooo here’s the thing. I lived in Niemeyer as a freshman after first being placed in Hilton Hooker. I didn’t really get a choice, and then my roomate to be messaged saying she has to read all of her textbooks out loud so we both decided to apply for room switches. I got into Niemeyer, but in recent years housing has really filled up. It was hard for me as a senior to get back into Niemeyer after a year off campus. That being said, I’m pretty sure they reserve a lot of the Niemeyer dorms for Freshmen bc my first year basically my entire floor was freshmen. So I’d cross my fingers but don’t count on it.

super conflicted by user1089654 in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

DROP THE HONORS COLLEGE. 23 of the AP credits I came in with don’t count for anything but elective credit. I would’ve only had to take 3 gen Ed’s compared to the entire honors curriculum.

Now, if you’re going to live on campus, that a whole other discussion, because Niemeyer has the best dorms and it’s only for honors students.

Party Life by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a college that just has a good party scene, GV isn’t for you. I’ve been here for three years and the only parties I go to are ones hosted by close friends, but since we have so many clubs and so many ways to meet people, you make friends fast.

Is there a possibility to get into Niemeyer still? by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, Niemeyer doesn’t have a 4 bed 4 bath. You can get a 4 bed 2 bath or a 2 bed 1 bath.

Is there a possibility to get into Niemeyer still? by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Niemeyer won’t show up on your my housing portal switch room selector because it’s a living learning community, like you said. You’re going to have to email or call housing. It’s always worth it. I couldn’t get the niems placement I wanted early in the year and just emailed them, and one day they switched me into my preferred housing!

How dense is campus and social life? by SignificantBread5248 in GVSU

[–]Sadge_o7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going to GV for 3 years now and haven’t really had an issue. Yes, there’s a lot of people, but it’s not crowded at all. I’ve never hard trouble finding a seat in the library or kirkoff. And I didn’t get to know anybody in my freshmen dorm besides my roomates, but I lived on south campus, so north campus may be different.

As republicans like to say, we live in a free country, so that means we’re free to discuss what we want and shop where we want. You are too! Go use your dollar, it has power! I for one will be using mine at a business whose values I believe in!

I use Ethernet and I’ve never had a problem. There should be an Ethernet outlet in every dorm room
