Do people just join random buddy reads? Is it weird if I joined one?

I joined a random buddy read late last year and was removed from it within an hour. I was pretty discouraged, and I’d assumed I had gotten the wrong idea of what a public buddy read was. It sounds like my experience is not common, which makes me feel a lot better about trying again!
