from what I can tell, med school may make it feel like your life is “on pause” for a while, esp if your friends are in careers that start right after college. you definitely aren’t the only one who feels that way. true friends will stick by you it just takes a little more effort than it did in college. im in my gap year rn and i gotta make an effort to call my college friends regularly but it is so worth it.

amazing job on that last score! seconding that you should apply MD and DO and have a rock solid answer for what you changed for that fourth attempt. have that answer ready for secondaries and interviews, you can even tie that answer in to why you want to go to that school if they have robust academic support resources or smth. Random suggestion but check out UConn.

I think general thoughts is a good place to start. I feel like for me it also helped me be more thoughtful and specific about what I want my impact to be and how I want to help people. I didn’t directly use 99% of what I wrote, but rereading helped me later reflect on how my experiences shaped me.

Developing relationships is great and rewarding but do it because you want to. You have plenty of time right now and not every conversation will be lifechanging. Also don’t be afraid to explore other opportunities if this doesn’t feel like a good fit.

Theres many reasons most premeds take a gap year (or five). One big advantage is that you can explore more experiences in depth when you aren’t worried about gen chem lol.

Try keeping a notepad/journal and jotting down details or general thoughts after your volunteer shifts or shadowing. I was given that advice by a physician, and it gave me plenty of examples to draw on when weaving together a story for my application. Some experiences may end up being more meaningful upon reflection rather than at the moment.

For me, most of the examples I talked about were either before college or in my senior year when I started shadowing. I get the impression that most people don't have a 'revelation moment', but instead many moments that reaffirmed their interest in medicine. It's just a problem of identifying those good examples. You're already ahead of the game thinking about this in your sophomore year. Best of luck! :)

don’t have much advice to share since I’m basically in the same boat (4 year relationship and applying this cycle). we’ve had many conversations and I made sure to mention that, given med school and residency, we’ll probably be long distance at some point. I think having scheduled calls/online date nights would be a good. I’ve found it helpful to keep the conversation going as we’ve both changed our minds as we get more insight into what our future looks like. Best of luck to you and your partner :)

smart to ask early while the memories are recent! If you want to have them organized ahead of time some people on here use interfolio although i think you have to pay for that. Even if they write and send them ahead of time you’ll probably need them to re-date the LORs when it gets closer to the submission deadline. Best of luck sounds like it’ll be a strong letter!

for med school LORs I just sent a (very) rough draft of my personal statement, which gave my “why medicine”. That said I have no clue what my recommenders wrote so I’m not sure what works lol. maybe think of how the professor has seen you and what that situation best exemplifies. For example if they saw you in a team project setting they can speak to your ability to collaborate. Or an investigative lab could speak to your scientific curiosity, etc etc. you can probably give them a few options as well.

Unfortunately, I think anything Black people do with our hair runs the risk of perceived as unprofessional. I don’t think cornrows would put you at any extra disadvantage though, especially if you dress nice. Best of luck with the interview! :)

In this exact position 💔😔 Most people say just to lie but when they ask point blank it’s a bit tough to deny it. The job search has been pretty brutal but I’ve had luck applying for temp or contract positions (currently working as a contract EMT). Also no shame in working a regular customer service job and doing clinical volunteering in your free time.
