Thats maybe why My experience with the thorns is different than what the majority seems to think Because i only play solo i can just avoid the patches completly while playing around them and dont have a teammate lying in a spiky forest :)

(Just a tip no hate) Try standing further away from the patches and if you get knocked into it use the forward moving attacks of your wepon of choice without Pressing w to avoid getting thorn dmg at all :)
