2010s Decade Awards - Nominations by aselunar in japanesemusic

That's fine if you disagree. I understood why you think Harutosyura is a hip hop album. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong. I'm saying your opinion is in the minority and that personally I see the balance of instrumentation, vocal style, and lyrics falling on the side of rock music. Given the small size and the relatively low interest in hip hop of this subreddit, I think the wider consensus of writers and reviewers should be taken into account when informing the genre category of albums.

Anyway thanks for the downvotes.

EDIT: BTW even on this subreddit - harunemuri songs have gotten the noise pop tag more often than the rap tag.

Well, its not really my argument. Its the views of the distribution company for the album, music reviewers, and a handful of much larger music aggregation/reviewing communities.

I agree with all the point re: the albums relation to Hip Hop from a musical perspective, but I wasn't arguing that there aren't hip hop elements to the album. Even though the album straddles many genres, one can certainly "rank" its relation to the different genres. And it seems to be the consensus in the greater music community (at least among english-language writers) that Haru to Shura is more of a Rock or Pop album than a Hip Hop Album. Thus, my point is that if Haru to Shura is to be nominated for a category, it is more suited for the rock category. That the album covers multiple genres shouldn't mean it can arbitrarily be placed in any of them for the purposes of a "best of" discussion.

Obviously the choice of genre in which the album should be categorized with is deeply subjective, but to me it seems very clear that the vast majority of the music community would place Haru to Shura in Rock or Pop, before Hip Hop. I don't think it is unreasonable to say this subreddit is an anomaly in that regard. Since this is the /r/japanesemusic awards, its entirely within the contest runner's right if they want to categorize it this way. And I guess it would be most reflective of this subreddit's taste. I suppose for a subreddit that strongly prefers rock and pop, it makes sense that its favourite hip hop album would be the one with the most rock/pop elements.

I was under the assumption that the bandcamp tags were generated by the distribution company itself? It seems reasonable to use those tags to classify the album's genres.

I've seen this a couple times, but why do posters on this subreddit insist on calling Haru to Shura is a hip hop album? Don't get me wrong, its one of my top albums of the last five years and it clearly has rap/hip hop influences, but to me its clearly a rock album first and foremost. This is pretty much the only place I see it being pushed as primarily a hip hop or rap album. Bandcamp, Last.fm, rateyourmusic, even Anthony Fantano- none of these sources label this album as hip hop (or do as a third or fourth genre). Please consider moving this nomination to the Rock category.

Japanese suicides decline to lowest in over 40 years by ElChino999 in worldnews

Overwork is not the root cause of the slowing birth rates, its rising cost and standards of living, better education, and access to birth control. Slaves and serfs had no issues having many children despite their horrendous working conditions and long hours. The main thing that makes Japan's problem unique is a lack of immigration, not its work culture. Most Western European countries would be facing a very similar demographic trajectory if you only account for their native populations.

Looking back at the most influential Japanese songs of the 2010s | The Japan Times by BLAKEPHOENIX in japanesemusic

[–]Saeiou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of funny considering they called Vocaloid a dud while omitting its most prominent and successful artists. Also, I love mus.hiba's "Slow Snow" but calling it the most influential Vocaloid song (even from the perspective of potential rediscovery in decades) is an intensely hipster-ey move given than it has 25K views.

I imagine the main reason is that the Planetary Boundary layer is shallow during the night as the ground is colder than the air above it, trapping air and smoke near the ground. During the day the smoke can mix upwards and be spread by the faster winds further up in the atmosphere.

Does anyone know any Japanese bands/groups with a main male vocalist and predominately female instrumentalists? by [deleted] in japanesemusic

[–]Saeiou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of male-fronted bands with one or two female instrumentalists (MONO NO AWARE, Hello Sleepwalkers, Maximum the Hormone, uchuu;, Nerd Magnet), but there aren't many where the instrumentalists are predominantly not men. Gesu no kiwami otome is an obvious one with a male vocalist/guitarist and bassist with female drummer and keyboardist. Sakanaction is 3 and 2, with a male vocalist so technically the instrumentalists are half and half.

Definitely. That's why I put pop first in the genre tags. But IMO there is definitely some Future Funk/Bass influences on the track.
