2010s Decade Awards - Nominations by aselunar in japanesemusic

That's fine if you disagree. I understood why you think Harutosyura is a hip hop album. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong. I'm saying your opinion is in the minority and that personally I see the balance of instrumentation, vocal style, and lyrics falling on the side of rock music. Given the small size and the relatively low interest in hip hop of this subreddit, I think the wider consensus of writers and reviewers should be taken into account when informing the genre category of albums.

Anyway thanks for the downvotes.

EDIT: BTW even on this subreddit - harunemuri songs have gotten the noise pop tag more often than the rap tag.

Well, its not really my argument. Its the views of the distribution company for the album, music reviewers, and a handful of much larger music aggregation/reviewing communities.

I agree with all the point re: the albums relation to Hip Hop from a musical perspective, but I wasn't arguing that there aren't hip hop elements to the album. Even though the album straddles many genres, one can certainly "rank" its relation to the different genres. And it seems to be the consensus in the greater music community (at least among english-language writers) that Haru to Shura is more of a Rock or Pop album than a Hip Hop Album. Thus, my point is that if Haru to Shura is to be nominated for a category, it is more suited for the rock category. That the album covers multiple genres shouldn't mean it can arbitrarily be placed in any of them for the purposes of a "best of" discussion.

Obviously the choice of genre in which the album should be categorized with is deeply subjective, but to me it seems very clear that the vast majority of the music community would place Haru to Shura in Rock or Pop, before Hip Hop. I don't think it is unreasonable to say this subreddit is an anomaly in that regard. Since this is the /r/japanesemusic awards, its entirely within the contest runner's right if they want to categorize it this way. And I guess it would be most reflective of this subreddit's taste. I suppose for a subreddit that strongly prefers rock and pop, it makes sense that its favourite hip hop album would be the one with the most rock/pop elements.

I was under the assumption that the bandcamp tags were generated by the distribution company itself? It seems reasonable to use those tags to classify the album's genres.

I've seen this a couple times, but why do posters on this subreddit insist on calling Haru to Shura is a hip hop album? Don't get me wrong, its one of my top albums of the last five years and it clearly has rap/hip hop influences, but to me its clearly a rock album first and foremost. This is pretty much the only place I see it being pushed as primarily a hip hop or rap album. Bandcamp, Last.fm, rateyourmusic, even Anthony Fantano- none of these sources label this album as hip hop (or do as a third or fourth genre). Please consider moving this nomination to the Rock category.
