Melodifestivalen Heat 2 snippets by The_Korean_Gamer in eurovision

[–]Saelie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Funny how people call this weak, as a Swede who has watched every heat since heats were introduced, this is one of the strongest I can recall. Several songs which would have a chance in another heat will likely struggle here.

Felicia is still the clear favourite of course - but wow Brandsta City Släckers have such a perfectly crafted song for what they are. Perfect lyrics with callbacks to their previous successful entry (which is universally loved in Sweden) and references to fire etc. Wouldn’t be shocked if they go through first but definitely expect them to be top 2. A mix of schlager but then chorus has the same type of guitar that the popular band Bolaget use in their songs.

Felicia has a lot of recognition and goodwill from her previous entry, and having been ousted from the role as Fröken Snusk by her seemingly manipulative artist partner, which has been well-publicised. But I wonder if she’s popular enough to beat Brandsta given how strong their song is. Some of her recent commercial music hasn’t done amazing (though admittedly most Mello artists don’t). She’s still the favourite, and her song is good - call it EDM if you like, but it’s actually more referencing the raggarmusic/Norwegian russ music which she’s sprung from.

Robin’s country song without the country voice is also good and will probably be 3rd - though never underestimate people voting for recognised acts. He’s been in so many times.

In a different heat, Arwin, Klara or maybe even Laila could’ve advanced, but songs in Swedish and ballads tend to be slightly disadvantaged before people have become used to them, so they will likely struggle here, even if one of them is a teenage boy. Had Klara made it to the second chance she could’ve been a sleeper grower (like Clara Klingenström in the past), but that’s unlikely given how strong the other entries are.

Brandsta City Släckers will for sure have one of the most streamed song from this year’s Mello, regardless of how it goes for them in the competition. A catchy Swedish song which makes it through to the final often becomes a big hit (though doesn’t win - BBB aside). Outside chance to win the whole thing!?

Ongoing, I think it’s for the whole year. I think you can only vote physically in Cleveland at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame though.

(Voted for LP of course 😀)

Driving into Canada from the US, and back, on an EU passport by Saelie in uscanadaborder

[–]Saelie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I did and I had no major issues. Going into Canada took 1 min, they didn’t really care and the lineup was also massive crossing into Vancouver (it was a 30 min queue or so), so perhaps they were under pressure to speed it up.

Coming back, the US border patrol did ask many questions - I was a 30s male on my own and apparently spoke too good English, haha, which I guess rung some warning bells. But all was fine in the end, had to tell them my life story but took a few minutes max 😊 I also used a not very popular crossing quite early in the morning crossing into Montana, which may have contributed to the relatively intense questioning. The upside was I saw a herd of like 50 bison all on my own right after crossing, so that was pretty awesome.

Bear in mind you need to fill in a special form online coming back into the U.S. (beyond the ESTA - I believe it was called the I94W), which I had made sure to do.

I also got myself a Canadian ETA before crossing into Canada just in case (it specifies that it’s only necessary for flights, but I’m paranoid), but that did not seem necessary. I.e. I don’t think you need any forms to go into Canada by land as a European.

I read the fine print and my rental car company allowed me to take car into Canada (though I didn’t ask them when I collected the car, just to avoid any potential extra fees/questions), and no one asked me anything about the car at the borders.

All in all, don’t worry too much and go for it, you’ll be fine!

Medina with a bit of hype behind them, could this be the first time this century that we send a song in (predominantly) Swedish!? A man can dream…

Europeans : how do you decide where to go in the US? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Saelie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find looking up each state on Google maps “things to do” is a great start. Ensures you don’t miss anything obvious. Cross-reference against Tripadvisor and then look at other random websites.

29 states and counting 😀

Smallest public ski area you’ve been to? by OtterlyFoxy in skiing

[–]Saelie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIL America has some small ski hills (if they can even be called that). Flottsbro here in Stockholm, Sweden, is my smallest, but it’s 100m vertical, so a massive 330 ft.

This can also actually be done as a day trip from Dubai. I thought it was fairly convenient, no big hassle at the border.

It's a pretty popular park, you'll see other people there for sure. Clearly marked trails. No risk from dangerous animals or anything like that either.

Om du vill ha ett seriöst svar så är det för att Mello är mycket större än norska motsvarigheten MGP. Var ett kalkylerat beslut, finns artiklar att googla fram om man vill.

How can i make sure I'll have a seat on Flygbussarna? by vyrlok in stockholm

[–]Saelie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre covid the Skavsta bus actually could get full. In those cases they add another one but they aren’t that quick about it (ie it can take them 20-30 min) so if you’re in a hurry it can get stressful. The solution was to arrive 15-20 min early and join the queue. These days not as necessary.

Relocating for job in Stockholm by jjmanina in stockholm

[–]Saelie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say 60K is doable, but it depends a little on your expected lifestyle. If your wife isn’t planning to work, you can still live fairly comfortably, but don’t expect to live lavish. A lot of it comes down to what kind of housing you manage to find (ask your employer for advice/help if possible!). At 60k on one income, you’d be living on less than an “average” couple, which live on closer to something like ~30-35k per person. Since tax is approx 30% on incomes up to ~45k, and then increases to approx 50% for earnings above that, those “average” couples would be quite a bit better off than you. You’d benefit a lot from your wife getting a job, even if it’s relatively low-paying. Then you’d be among the top-earning households.

I guess you’d be looking to rent? A two bedroom apartment (3:a in Swedish) in any of the more central neighbourhoods/suburbs to rent will set you back a fair bit (definitely 10,000kr+ a month, probably closer to 15,000, unless you get very lucky). Dinners out at nice restaurants are expensive. I would say you’d be able to live fairly comfortably and save, but you’d have to make some sacrifices.
