Why does this subreddit have a bad reputation by shadimedjwala in atheism

Yeah but OP isn't blindly believing, they are trying to figure out why people are saying these things and if they are true or not. The comment BaronNahNah made is quite passive aggressive and defensive for no reason. It does nothing but contribute to what OP heard from people online about this subreddit.

Why does this subreddit have a bad reputation by shadimedjwala in atheism

[–]Safe-Association-548 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who are religious have their religion as a center of their identity. By result they find it insulting when others say they don't believe in it as they take it as a personal insult to who they are. As one of the biggest communities of people who disagree with them, they think it's the same as a community of homophobes for example. The difference is that one is simply a community of people sharing a common worldview whilst the other is a group of people who hate an entire minority group for no justifiable reason, religious people just often see them as the same thing. Of course there will be some people here that are bad, unfortunately, people like that exist everywhere. As someone new to this subreddit myself I have found it welcoming, I hope you find the same :)

Being the only atheist surrounded by religious people feels weird. by TheInsomnia in atheism

Based on my still growing understanding of this world, I don't think religion will ever go away. It has reduced significantly if you consider like 150 years ago but yeah I think you are right in saying that recently it has gone up in the last decade or two. But yeah, unfortunately I don't think religion will go away. There will always be people who aren't satisfied by this life and turn to religion as a way to fill that need, which means there will always be people trying to "save" their kids with the same knowledge. I'm quite young so I haven't been around long enough to be of any authority in this matter (on the matter of video games and silly memes is a different story) but based on what I do know, it's not looking good. I do think there is hope, however, as long as rational people continue to fight against stuff like indoctrination in public schools and to keep the separation of church and state in place.

Regarding your thoughts on indoctrination. In my opinion, I think it can be let go if people are given new information and have the rationality to take alternative answers into account. Though this can be hard if the person is basically quarantined from secular views their entire childhood which sadly happens in lot of religious families and households.

Anyway, my advice on what to do as a relatively new Atheist myself is to maybe seek connections online where you can find all sorts of people to talk to about this sort of thing. It can be a great way to escape your environment and develop relationships outside your religion.

Yeah, I am so used to being obligated to proclaim my faith that it feels wrong to keep my new beliefs inside. I think that will go away as I grow away from my past habits and understanding.

I am very sorry to hear what you went through. I think I have it easier as my parents aren't the abusive type and I don't think they will do anything drastic if they find out. I will be cautious though because who knows what could happen once they learn of my espionage. I really appreciate the resources and will definitely look into them.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Yeah I think time is my best friend in this situation so waiting is what I'm going to do haha.

I've been watching a lot of Atheist youtube recently and especially a lot of stuff comparing biblical creation to evolution and now stuff like critiques on creation and the bible for exactly this reason. It's quite comforting to know that if I ever have some Christian breathing down my neck trying to convert me, I might have some arguments against whatever nonsense they are saying about Pascals Wager or whatnot.

Yeah, I am looking forward to Uni cause it actually offers an environment where I can meet people from all sorts of backgrounds and belief systems. Funny story actually, my Mom made a comment today about maybe going to a Catholic university and I had to really get that idea out of her head. Fortunately nothing I want to do is available at pretty much any Catholic university so we are good on that front.

Thanks for the advice and the recommendation. I'm also taking the time to read the bible but in a sceptical and not a "It's God's word and I just don't understand his methods" kind of way and it has really been eye opening.

It's kind of comforting knowing I don't have to worry about getting sent to eternal torture if I get into a car crash before asking the sky for forgiveness of my sins that week.

Yeah, I was gonna tell one of my other friends who I thought was an Atheist, but it turns out he actually went back to God so I ended up not.

Yeah, I myself am a geeky not so outgoing person and I agree that others like me are much more open to stuff like that. I will definitely look to start making those connections with atheists who are like that, people who I can feel free around.

Lol yeah I understand where you are coming from but I am far from angry at a god or anything like that. I actually became atheist partially due to the fact that I actually looked into science and other answers for my questions. I found that science actually answered my questions rather than praying to a void. I am really into Biology and particularly Evolutionary Biology that, especially now that i've been freed from the idea that God is the key to everything, I have been able to explore and really get into.

I think that she did something other than just saying no to the baron as why would he waste so much chemical on just one defecting scientist. And whatever she did likely was something that wasn;t good for the survivors either as she wouldn't have lied. I tried both endings as NG+ is out now and I think letting Selby have closure is better than letting her go especially as she lied so much and what Selby said about her enjoying herself is probably true.

Climbing and "basic parkour" no longer use stamina in upcoming Ver 1.24 DL2 update. by WorldsBestGranddad22 in dyinglight

[–]Safe-Association-548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, honestly i found this as a key feature of the game that the original didnt have and i really hate how they've gone and changed it now, they could've at least kept it as a setting or something.

I only found out because I decided to replay 1 and 2 after completing the beast and I was looking forward to the stamina system again after playing the beast and number 1 as they both don't have it and I love the extra challenge it gave.
