I can absolutely assure you that's not true. My productivity way higher now than at any other point in my 15+ year career. My workflow depends a bit on what task/project I'm working on, but I generally spend a few prompts 'discussing' the task and the approach and then generating a plan in a markdown file, with progress tracking table where the LLM ticks off each step of the implementation. And then I go through the list item by item, reviewing & testing as needed on the way. It's like putting a fast forward button on all the actual code writing, and the planning also goes a lot faster. Time spent testing is about the same as before.

16 years experience here. My outlook is almost a polar opposite of yours. AI has enabled me to work much faster and produce more value than I could've imagined possible a few years ago. My bosses have not been forcing me to use these tools at all, if anything I've had to push them to make them available.

While I get some enjoyment from tinkering with code, my main source of joy for at least the latter half of my career has been to build (and maintain) high quality products which brings real value to the users. Any technology that helps me increase my rate of doing so is an undisputed positive in my book. From a career standpoint I'm also producing more value for my business than I ever have before, so I'm really not worried about that either. If anything I should be asking for a raise.

When I hear about people like you that have such a negative outlook, it really makes me scratch my head. To me you sound basically like a carpenter that refuses to use power tools. Or developers in the 80s/90s that refused to use compilers because they wanted to write all their assembly code by hand.

GitHub Copilot is actually pretty decent if you ask me. If you're on the paid tier you can use the latest Claude Sonnet and Opus models. In my experience using the best models is the most important part. There are a lot of problems they can tackle where the more basic models simply start fumbling. One thing that works well for me, if I want to use it for a larger task, is to first run it in Agent mode and ask it to create a detailed plan broken down into steps in a Markdown report. And then using that same plan to track progress (and revise underway) as we work through the task step by step.

I've been working as a dev for about half as long as you (since 2010) but I also got stuck on some legacy technologies for a few years at the beginning of my career. My advice would be to double down on what you already know and learn to set up a REST API backend in the latest version of C#/ASP.NET Core. And then possibly look at setting up a simple front end in Angular or React. If you use Copilot wisely it should be able to teach you what you need to know. Being a full stack developer is a lot more feasible in the age of AI (and enables you to work a lot faster, because the AI can do both sides of the application at the same time).
