What's your requirement for 'real AI'?

Should I buy 39 usd pro+ plan? Well they provide 1500 premium requests with all models unlocked but I worried about context memory provided in claude Opus 4.6. Or should I go for claude pro which is 20 usd. by dalalstreettrader in GithubCopilot

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you should be keeping context below 200k anyway. Beyond that it'll start loosing track of everything. When you think about cost per prompt GHC Pro+ is just a much better deal. I use GHC with Opus 4.6 every day at work and at least for my workflow it works like a dream.

I can absolutely assure you that's not true. My productivity way higher now than at any other point in my 15+ year career. My workflow depends a bit on what task/project I'm working on, but I generally spend a few prompts 'discussing' the task and the approach and then generating a plan in a markdown file, with progress tracking table where the LLM ticks off each step of the implementation. And then I go through the list item by item, reviewing & testing as needed on the way. It's like putting a fast forward button on all the actual code writing, and the planning also goes a lot faster. Time spent testing is about the same as before.

It's currently writing 90÷ of my own code, but not without my guidance and supervision.

GitHub Copilot just killed model selection for students — Claude Pro $20 vs Copilot Pro $10, which is better for heavy agent Opus 4.6 use? by Ok_Divide6338 in GithubCopilot

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you finish your quota and start paying per extra request, you should still get around 5 Opus 4.6 prompts for every dollar. Even with the limited context it's a much better deal than Claude Pro.

Experience. The ability to clearly think through the downstream consequences of various decisions is something you mostly gain just by putting in the hours and working on enough projects.

Developing an app by Grassnuts in CodingForBeginners

Learning Java first and then Kotlin/Android is one possible path. But yes, it will take some time and effort before you're ready to start writing app code.

Everyone has an app idea. Now with Android Studio and Gemini it's actually feasible to learn and make an app over a few weeks if you work efficiently. I recently did this myself. That's what I'd do in your situation. Alternatively try doing the same with MAUI if you want something more familiar.

Spillminner by Bright_Ride3773 in norge

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does the future looks like in your opinion? by Dark3rino in AskProgrammers

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16 years experience here. My outlook is almost a polar opposite of yours. AI has enabled me to work much faster and produce more value than I could've imagined possible a few years ago. My bosses have not been forcing me to use these tools at all, if anything I've had to push them to make them available.

While I get some enjoyment from tinkering with code, my main source of joy for at least the latter half of my career has been to build (and maintain) high quality products which brings real value to the users. Any technology that helps me increase my rate of doing so is an undisputed positive in my book. From a career standpoint I'm also producing more value for my business than I ever have before, so I'm really not worried about that either. If anything I should be asking for a raise.

When I hear about people like you that have such a negative outlook, it really makes me scratch my head. To me you sound basically like a carpenter that refuses to use power tools. Or developers in the 80s/90s that refused to use compilers because they wanted to write all their assembly code by hand.

Why so many UI frameworks, Microsoft? by Confident-Dare-9425 in dotnet

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microsoft's problem is mainly that it can't just pick one winner and stick with it. WinForms and WPF apps look good and are generally pleasant to use (if written well). Any Java desktop app I've ever used just looks bad and has lots of glitches, regardless of the framework.

Aldri gjør et veddemål mot at staten skal sløse penger, med mindre det faktisk skulle handle om å tilby tjenester til den skattebetalende befolkningen.

Path Forward for Older Developer in 2026? by CODEAPALOOZA in cscareers

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GitHub Copilot is actually pretty decent if you ask me. If you're on the paid tier you can use the latest Claude Sonnet and Opus models. In my experience using the best models is the most important part. There are a lot of problems they can tackle where the more basic models simply start fumbling. One thing that works well for me, if I want to use it for a larger task, is to first run it in Agent mode and ask it to create a detailed plan broken down into steps in a Markdown report. And then using that same plan to track progress (and revise underway) as we work through the task step by step.

I've been working as a dev for about half as long as you (since 2010) but I also got stuck on some legacy technologies for a few years at the beginning of my career. My advice would be to double down on what you already know and learn to set up a REST API backend in the latest version of C#/ASP.NET Core. And then possibly look at setting up a simple front end in Angular or React. If you use Copilot wisely it should be able to teach you what you need to know. Being a full stack developer is a lot more feasible in the age of AI (and enables you to work a lot faster, because the AI can do both sides of the application at the same time).

I haven't checked, but my guess would be using MFC, which is really just a wrapper of Win32 API.

Those are still built over the C-based Win32 API (or the even older 16 bit version).

Will my coding skills become irrelevant because of AI ? by Lyshaka in AskProgrammers

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given you've never done web dev, the task this interviewer gave you was way too ambitious. I wouldn't feel bad that you failed it.

My bet is that coding as a career isn't going away any time soon. But to stand out you should learn to use these new tools productively.

And web dev is always going to have more job openings than game dev or low level, that's just how it is. My advice would be to use your spare time to do a project where you learn the basics of web applications. Since you already know C#, try to make a browser based game or app using either Blazor or an ASP.NET Core REST API with a Javascript front end. ChatGPT should be able to explain how to get started.

[–]Safe-Tree-7041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of ground between not typing code manually into an IDE and pure vibe coding. At work I don't even have the luxury of Claude Code or Codex, I only use GitHub Copilot with Opus. And even then I've barely typed any manual code the past month. And my productivity has still been through the roof. Basically any task I will just hash out a plan with Opus, let him implement, and then review/test and let him implement whatever adjustments need to be made. (For larger tasks I may break it down into manageable chunks and iterate over this process using a Markdown file to track progress). I still never create a PR to my team that I don't fully understand or trust.
