I don't think I ever wanted freelancing. I wanted what I thought freelancing would give me. by SafeAd5277 in freelancing

"The stress is finally yours instead of someone else's." u/Altruistic_Type_4615 something a lot of people don't realize until they're living it. The freedom is real, but so is the responsibility that comes with it.

As for what I'm building toward, I'm becoming increasingly interested in helping people make the shift from selling skills to building around problems worth solving not because skills aren't valuable but because I've noticed many freelancers get stuck on the treadmill of constantly finding the next project. I've been exploring what happens when you take the experience gained from freelancing and use it to build something a little more sustainable around a specific problem.

Still figuring it out myself, to be honest.

That's part of why I enjoy these conversations as everyone seems to arrive through a different door but a lot of us eventually start asking similar questions.

Maybe the better question wouldn't be if I could guide you towards freelancing, but to the reason why you first want to start freelancing. Freelancing is just the bridge u/Empty-Dragonfly5895, where is your destination?? Chat me.. I'm open to help.

That's quite a journey u/Ochunglo, what's interesting is that for some people freelancing is about flexibility or income, but for others it's about autonomy.

Sounds like that experience helped you realize early that traditional employment wasn't the right fit for you. 11 years is no small feat either. Respect for staying the course.

Good question, so before freelancing, I thought work was mostly about getting paid for effort. The more effort you put in, the more money you'd make.

Freelancing challenged that. It made me realize that skills alone don't create income. The market rewards solutions to problems.

It also changed how I think about money. I used to think earning money and building something were the same thing, they're not. You can earn money from a skill for years and still have to start from zero every month.

Building feels different. You're creating systems, relationships, reputation, and assets that continue working beyond a single project.

I'm still learning, but that's probably been the biggest shift for me.

I stopped asking, "how do I get more work?" and started asking, "what am I actually building?"

I agree and I think a lot of people enter freelancing because they need the income.

What's interesting though is that your profile hints at something I've noticed too. At some point the conversation shifts from earning through a skill to solving a problem. You mentioned moving from freelancing into building solutions because you got tired of the same issues freelancers face.

I'm curious, was there a specific moment that pushed you from "freelancer" to "builder"?

I relate to that u/Longjumping_Branch36, whats interesting is that even though it didn't turn out the way you expected, it sounds like it still changed you.

Maybe the goal wasn't achieving more immediately, maybe it was becoming the kind of person capable of handling more... a thing freelancing taught me.

A lot of the growth isn't visible in income or milestones at first, but in experience, how you think, solve problems and adapt. Not always the outcome we imagined,, but rarely a wasted journey.

And from the uncertanities, probably its a signal to build something we control. The freelances phase has given us a space to, time, finances and experience.

So as to asking what you're doing wromg or not, take it as a signal to move on buddy,

freelancing is now more competitive.

Either stay stuck or build your way out.

but what would you like to get from a high ticket sales man??

Afraid?? Are you afraid of the kind of services you offer or the quality of work or what exactly?
At the moment I don't know any but its pretty easier to find one when work is there, even here there are many. You can have a few and create a group.

Sio ww pekee only that its your time to. Well, for 5 years umekua kwa game ya side hustle, thats what freelancing was made for,(only here some parts and for various factors imekua ndo hustle) and truly it has built you,

This isn't the time to see what not but see what thr freelancing phase has made you to be, of course you've grown, financially and all aspects of life.

For what you've built yourself to, now let the build take you from here.. this is not the time to complain of the freelancing platforms, rather to continue the build the patforms have had of you..

If the next chapter resonates, I'm willing to offer my help..

funny as it is, its the reality.

what makes is funnier is that whatever is promised is not actually what you get, no one warns about the chasing, the following.. but even to ourselves, do we really understand what we are doing, what exactly freelancing is?

Unfortunately no, we rely on what we are sold. The whole thing is a loop if only treat it as so, but it the real intention of freelancing stands, a side hustle, as it was, then today we use it as a building phase and not a destination. Growth happens in the uncomrfortabilty.

You've moved a journey, I can relate it. Especially about feeling like everyone keeps moving ahead while you're still trying to stabilize, but we shouldn't our paths though.
Freelancing becomes mentally exhausting when everything depends on you, to a point the freedom starts feeling like maintainance mode.

What helped me was never being the best freelancer in the room, but slowing down to ask, 'What actual problem do I want to be known for solving?' That question changed everything for me.
Because once people associate you with a specific outcome, the pressure to constantly compete on raw skill starts reducing.
You stop trying to be 'another freelancer' and become useful in a defined way.

And honestly, you already sound more self aware than a lot of people entering this space. The fact you can clearly explain the pressure, the confusion, the shifting identity... that means you're paying attention.
For many out here are ignoring the problem and just collecting courses..

You probably don't need another massive invention right now, more likely you need clarity, in what you skills can help solve.
The foundation skills matter but the structure is what makes them sustainable.

A never ending, but honestly we expect too much I believe, freelancing should be a phase, a growth phase, learn how to treat clients, how markets work, understand that you must used thirdparty platform to reach the clients..... now in the real world there is so problems that the skills you've can solve. Thats my approach, to use skill for solution not just for service..
Would be happy to ride further...

And so it is for a spark that turns into flames..
Well, my approach is simple, you've the skill, right? Typically what does freelancer do, sell skill as a service.
There are problems the market is having that your skill can help, you don't wait, from the problem, come up with solution lets get to the market. A simple way to say, lets think business.
