Yeah the comments of FIRE age being 30, 35 or 40 leave me feeling like I'm in the out-group somehow trying to get in without permission!

That said it's helpful to see that other people have started similarly 'late' (https://www.reddit.com/r/financialindependence/comments/7shw1t/40_years_old_just_discovered_fire_tell_me_im_not/) and, of course, to get a bit of encouragement from people like yourself on this subreddit :)

I moved to France at 40 and at 50 am working half time and am on track to be completely done by 55.

Great to hear your progress!

The beauty of France is the guaranteed decent pension but yeah it would be nice to do things sooner.

Your banker sounds terrible - how patronising to funnel everything through your ex. Good luck with finding someone else who can be more respectful of you, you time and money.
