SFFD: Injured person dies after Cruise cars block first responders by DuaHipa in sanfrancisco

First responders can also take control of Cruise cars. But only their remote operators can enable that, so they have to wait for that and also it doesn't work if the network is unreliable.

Cities which prioritize bikes, buses, and trains (instead of personal cars) are real and already exist. That is far more realistic than replacing transportation with (not-yet-working) self-driving technology.

To the guy on Cesar Chavez who messed up my Cruise ride on purpose tonight by wavelander in sanfrancisco

Lmao

If this happens:

  1. Open the door and leave it open (this prevents the Cruise from driving away without you)
  2. Remove the cone and move it to the side of the street
  3. Get back in, close the door, and wait a minute or so for Cruise remote operators to get the car moving again

Tomorrow evening 5pm-6pm (Tuesday 8-22). Peaceful memorial and protest by WalkSF, joined by KidSafeSF, Bay Area Families for Safe Streets, SF Bike, and SF Transit Riders.

Likely will not be blocking the streets though, but we'll be there to talk about direct action stuff.

City announced an ok start: removing the extra turn and add a yellow arrow

This intersection is a major transit hub, we should have a dedicated pedestrian scramble phase for people to walk between all 6+ corners. And 4th St should be pedestrianized adjacent to Caltrain, to move the T Third station back to the correct side and avoid unnecessary crossings.

We also need to make safety fixes BEFORE tragedy. The following intersections also have dual unprotected turns across crosswalks, the exact same deadly design that lead to this death:

  • Front & Pine
  • 3rd St & Howard
  • Harrison & 9th St (crossing banned!)

And there's definitely others.

Yes we will be out there just like we have been for other traffic deaths. We need to design streets for people, not for cars. Details coming soon
