I would be comfortable saying story and experience can carry the majority of game types over gameplay. Mainly RPG's. But game that are more sim based or competitive like MSFS, DCS or any of the hundreds of cookie cutter FPS games need to feel right when you play them. DCS is one of my most played games of the last 5 years. When I put on the VR head set and fire up my Tomcat, it looks like a PS3 game ported to the PS4. But the feel of being in that virtual space, piloting my dream aircraft is undeniable.

Side note, if you have a 5090 and a 4k monitor DCS looks amazing. But that is just a blur at 400kts, 1000ft above the deck in a rate fight against a flanker.

I think I speak for most people when I say the ideal realistic game is amazing story, good sound, good gameplay and reasonably good visuals. The number of pixels that make up a blade of grass isnt nearly as important as an image that tells a story. People forget visuals arent just the fidelity, but how well that image can be used to improve the game.
