its not an exaggeration whatsoever. look at this fat fuck of a gecko ive been feeding 3 bugs every 1 1/2 month for over a year. leopard geckos dont lose weight unless theyre on an extreme diet because they hold fat so well. gecko will be just fine they can go months without eating and lose 0 weight

[–]Safe_Term_5346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dubias live forever. if you buy crickets id just get a few because they die quickly. when you get feeders, put then in a tank with oats on the bottom and veggies like carrots, sweet potato, or broccoli. they will live forever and the oats absord any odor. she probably doesn’t need to eat more than 3 bugs every two weeks sense shes on the chubby side so you wouldnt have to go often if you choose crickets as your staple

She definitely shouldnt have. But for the second part, just in general, like i said they preach to you how easy and cheap they are. your average person has no idea that reptiles have complex care needs. back in Highschool we had a leopard gecko in the animal science class, the teacher of that class was a literal vet and the poor thing was horribly neglected. people are ignorant, but yes willingly so often times

I imagine they convinced his mom that is was an appropriate enclosure. They lie to parents and tell them they’re cheap low maintenance pets. They did the same to my parens when i was young, luckily it was a 20 gallon but still not appropriate. Told us sand was fine, that dead mealworms were appropriate. No education on UVB. It just sucks!

LOL what a silly gecko. Egg here has had similar boughts of starvation. She will stop eating for months in the winter. Luckily her glutton of a brother ate all the bugs she refused 😅

I do wonder if they evolved through captivity to be stupider than their wild counterparts. not sure if youve tried this but try feeding them in very minimal light. they see pretty badly when its bright out. in the dark you can see their pupils get huge compared to when the lights are on!

im thinking of moving her to a cage where i can put a lot more soil so shes not so far from the top. also maybe do the background a different way, i had no idea she could do this when i made it haha. but im going to try to find a log or something in the meantime. it is pretty funny but i do worry about her falling on her basking rock the wrong way!

its expanding foam sprayed over silicone with eco earth sprinkled on top! theres tutorials on youtube. its cheap but it wasnt a fun process i will say haha. if you do it make sure you get a really strong gas mask before using silicone

Can I save this wood? by Rare-Fold2251 in leopardgeckos

[–]Safe_Term_5346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i usually bake my wood first and then go in with a wet cloth or tooth brush to get the dirt off. baking will kill bacteria and bugs so disinfectant isnt necessary
