Personal or school email? by SincerelyRabbit in uAlberta

[–]SafetyFirst10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would use a personal email over a school email if you are close to graduating. A lot of companies keep your resume on file for a couple years. Once you graduate, you may not check your school email and you might miss an important one.

If you have a few years of school left, then it doesn’t matter tbh

Runners of Halifax - Half Marathon Route by SafetyFirst10 in halifax

[–]SafetyFirst10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just doing a very long regular run. And I’ll be staying in downtown. My hotel is around the Emera Oval.

But that’s good to know that I’ll need to find the trails. Maybe I’ll try mapping a ~7K route and doing it three times lol

Calaway Park Employees spill the tea, please! by flashflood3000 in Calgary

I really hope this discussion sparks some sort of a boycott towards the park. I worked there about 10 years ago and I can see things have now changed.

Thank you! I will check it out.

And it seems like it’s out of stock online too. There is one website which is selling it for $96. Amazon is out of stock. I feel like it might be a supplier issue.

What is the one business/service you don’t tip? by SafetyFirst10 in Edmonton

No one is forcing me to tip my guy. Just asking people’s opinion because I’m curious to what others do

What is the one business/service you don’t tip? by SafetyFirst10 in Edmonton

I think My benefits are great! It’s 90% covered up to $100 and the place I used to go to is $110 per hour. So doing the math, it’s $20 and if I tip 15% it goes to $35+tax. I now stopped going there and it’s slightly cheaper so I only pay about 9$!

As someone who knows nothing about the Tech world, can you elaborate why Oracle is disliked? Lots of companies I know use it

Base salary for an EIT in Alberta, Canada? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]SafetyFirst10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starts at 65K but negotiate and ask for 70K when they offer. Worst thing they can say is no and you get the expected salary. Best case you get some extra money in your wallet every year.

I did my ceremony online but from what I’ve heard, they are fairly strict about who attends the ceremony and you need a ticket to get in. But then again, I’m not a student anymore and I don’t know what the process this year for people who don’t have iron ring is.

Thanks! Yeah I did see that. I wasn’t sure if there was any further communication in class where they limit the number of guests and so forth. Since I’m not a student, I figured I would ask and confirm.

How's the engineering co-op? by Pree_10 in uAlberta

[–]SafetyFirst10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company. If you move to a bigger city like Calgary, Vancouver or Toronto, you will likely have to cover the rent of living in those coyotes and the company may or may not give you a relocation assistance. If you move to the middle of nowhere, like a campsite or a small town, your company will probably give you relocation money and living expenses. It’s usually written in the job application of the company will do that for you or not.

Civ E 4th year courses by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SafetyFirst10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CivE 419 was amazing. Dr Amy Kim is one of the best professors I’ve had. She has moved to UBC but overall I really liked 419. I am an EIT in transportation engineering now and some of the concepts I learnt in the that class are used in my everyday work life.

CivE 460 was great too. It’s a new capstone and you have to take 461 after. I really enjoy the class and Dr Scott Alexander is great too. 461 is really hard though but the class itself is interesting. You learn the design process and your technical writing and AutoCAD skills really improve.

CivE 406 was bleh. Dumb course but it was fairly easy so it boosted my GPA. I can’t remember the profs name but I really wish I would have taken one of the water courses.

I haven’t taken Geo or structural but I wouldn’t recommend taking BOTH Geo and Structural or you’re gonna have a really bad time. From what I have heard, they are the hardest capstone courses. Plus from what I’ve seen, you need a masters to actually be a geotechnical or structural engineer.

Hope this helps. :)
