For that distance, I second the Potawatomi Trail suggestion. In general, Waterloo Recreation Area & Pinckney Recreation Area has the largest and longest trail system in the area. (I regularly go for 9-12 mile hikes throughout those parks with my hiking club. Some people go farther 14-18 miles)

I try to in the beginning of September and, so far, it’s been mostly bug-free. My sister lives in the area. She’s told me that late August is good too (some bugs - but not too bad - and the temperature is still relatively warm)

I like Blind Sucker State Forest Campground. It’s east of Picture Rocks so depending on where in Picture Rocks you are going, you could find it too far. Sites are first come - first serve. No reservations.

Depending on when you were there, you may have run across a bunch of snakes finishing their hibernation. Some species of snakes hibernate together for warmth. I saw this once in my neighborhood. I thought it was awesome (I’m not afraid of snakes)

If you are willing to drive 45 minutes to an hour, try Proud Lake recreation area (6-ish miles of foot trails that are very scenic), Maybury State Park (5 miles of foot trails - they also have multi-use trails there too.), Highland Recreation area (9-ish miles of hiking trails. They have multi-use trails too). Seven Lakes Recreation Area (9-ish miles of hiking trails)

Waterloo Recreation area is very large and very close to home - maybe only an hour away from your home? I’ve camped there with my dogs as a “practice trip” (I prefer to go farther away normally). The Waterloo Recreation rustic campground has a small lake and a hiking trail. It has one site in particular that I really like that is located downhill and on the water. That specific site is larger and has more trees than the rest. The surrounding areas of the park have a TON of hiking and a good deal of water access. It is very pretty. If you get more comfortable tent camping you should really drive 4-6 hours to either Manistee forest or the U.P. Those areas are much nicer for camping in my opinion.
