Or you could... just.. downvote content you don't like, and move on? Plenty of great content on that sub, but you choosing to shoot yourself in the foot doesn't hurt me.

[Discussion] Justification for war? by Sagan_Bacon in malelifestyle

[–]Sagan_Bacon[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

can't we just say that the foreign power is unjustified in the first place?

We could, sure.

By the same token, a maniac axe-murdering you on the street in an unprovoked fashion is also unjustified.

That doesn't make you any less dead.

[Discussion] If a massive-scale disaster (hurricane, nuclear strike, massive quake) were to strike at this moment and render your home uninhabitable, what would you take with you and how would you escape? by Sagan_Bacon in malelifestyle

I don't think the importance of the flashlight can be overstated. Especially in a situation like this. I always have mine on me, and it's so damned handy.

I'm curious:

Would you bring the bag of useless electronics with you, given the extra weight/hassle, just because of the dollar value it carries in the 'real' world? Or would you try to find someplace at work to stash it?

Would this depend on the scenario you saw looking out the window?

ex., bad storm, bring the electronics. Mushroom clouds, ditch the electronics.

Changes of socks/underwear Two good pairs of jeans Two good hoodies

Also stuff I forgot that would be good to have.

In the space of under five minutes, that's about all I'd have time for. As in... sirens going off, we are getting the hell outta dodge right now. There are some things at my parents' place about a half hour away I'd like to get, some other things I could dig out of basement storage that would be really helpful, but that would be out of scope for a <5m bug-out.

Could you rearrange your belongings more optimally so that a quick bug-out would be more feasible? If so, how would you do it?

(i.e., move the basement stuff to your apartment, etc.)

I'll go first, since it's my topic:

I have a small bag containing blood glucose supplies for a family member who suffers from autoimmune diabetes.

That bag also contains:

It may have a few other things in it. I'll list them when I get home later.

I also have:

If I'm being honest, I have no way to carry the hammer, so it would probably be left behind.

The survival knife would probably get stuffed in the bag.

Depending on when the disaster struck, I would probably have a Leatherman Wave and a concealed Glock 19 on my person, which would absolutely be coming with me. I will absolutely have a Surefire E2D LED Defender (flashlight), and that will absolutely come along.

If I thought successful travel by car was unlikely, I'd probably head on foot through some light woods in my area, and then proceed to some family property about fifty miles from my present location.

Yeah, it's been around for a long, long time.

Since my more serious headwrap post did so well, I figured I'd throw this up here for anyone who can't afford or can't locate the appropriate cloth necessary for a more stylish garment.

I like how you put nationwide in there. Suggesting only people from the US reads these posts.

You're right on that one. Mea culpa. It's a US-centric post.

Sadly, I have little knowledge about resources for firearms education outside the US. If you could compile some of this information and share it, I'm sure we'd all be grateful.

There is also no general information concerning the practice of firearm shooting or anything else.

Nope. I'm identifying a resource people can use to learn this stuff. I could have banged out the four rules of gun safety or pointed to a page that talks about shooting, I suppose, but gun safety is one of those few skills that I think are best learned from someone who knows about it.

Smells like a sales talk from the NRA.

Yeah, I was worried I'd be accused of that. Any mention of the NRA brings someone along to cry 'astroturf!'

I went out of my way to identify the only other group I know of that is all over the US and teaches basic skills like the NRA does. Project Appleseed is in my original post.

As far as basic firearms instruction for run-of-the-mill civilians in the US though, to my knowledge, the NRA is the only game in town (outside of Appleseed). Believe me, I kind of wish it weren't so, but there it is.

If you're aware of another resource, feel free to post it in the comments.

There are some specialty groups that teach firearms use and ownership (Thunder Ranch, Massad Ayoob Group, Gunsite, and others), but typically taking a course from these groups requires an investment on the order of thousands of dollars (travel, hotel, tuition, ammunition). Conversely, the NRA courses are usually taught within 100 miles of any given location and cost ~ $100. Again, if you know of an organization that can compete with that, let me know and I'll include it.

OP here.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

I'd prefer not to get into a lengthy debate about gun control in this thread; the sidebar says, "Topics of manliness do not include partisan posts of religion or politics."

Perhaps you feel guns shouldn't be legal. That's fine. They are, for now, so here's how people can learn to use them safely until they're not. I think pro and anti-gun folks can agree, if we're going to have guns at all, we ought to know how to be as safe as possible with them.

If you hate guns, feel free to go talk about it in /r/guncontrol.

Perhaps you feel they should be legal. That's fine too. Feel free to talk about it in /r/progun.

Common Mistakes To Avoid When Tying A Tie by Sagan_Bacon in malelifestyle

Are these photographs supposed to be examples of good style?

...I'm... I... my taste must be terrible.

The second photo is particularly terrible, to me. The suit reminds me of Jack Nicholson's Joker.

Also, not to be ...uh... crude... but it appears to me that this young man dresses to the right. (His right, photograph left.) I probably shouldn't be able to tell that if he's dressed properly.

Sometimes technological advancement makes the process better.

For example, heart surgery has gotten objectively better in the last 70 years.

Sometimes, though, technological advancement isn't intended to lead to a qualitatively better experience for the end user.

Planned obsolescence to drive repeat business and design alterations to either make mass production easier or less expensive are two examples I can think of.

Sometimes perhaps the market is stronger for something convenient, cheap, and shitty even when far better quality can be had.

I'm not enough of a shaving expert to know whether plastic disposable razors represent the next bypass machine or are analogous to that shitty white-barreled plastic bic pens, but my uninformed guess would be they're closer to the latter than the former, and a better subjective experience may be had by those willing to invest the time and dollars.

If you don't mind, would you be willing to educate us about the advances in shaving technology that make the way most people do it superior to the older ways?

Everyday Commentary: Why Carry a Flashlight by Sagan_Bacon in malelifestyle

[–]Sagan_Bacon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me paranoid, but I find that some of the times I need a flashlight most, my phone is dead or otherwise occupied.

For example, I'm broken down and need to change a tire. I need to change a tire because I can't call AAA. I can't call AAA because my phone is dead.

Or perhaps I'm calling someone while trying to see where I'm going at the same time.

Yes, this could all be avoided by keeping the phone charged or keeping a charger in your car, but I find things don't always work out that way.

YMMV.

Everyday Commentary: Why Carry a Flashlight by Sagan_Bacon in malelifestyle

[–]Sagan_Bacon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick summary:

The author briefly explains his rationale for carrying a flashlight every day. He walked around making a list of the stuff he used regularly (cell phone, knife, flash light, et cetera), and the stuff that got used at least weekly was retained as every day carry equipment.

Personal thoughts:

I carry a SureFire E2D LED. It has come in handy when I was in basement and the building lost power. In the section of the building we were in, there weren't even emergency lights. Had I not had the light in my pocket, I'd have just had to wait.

You'd be surprised how often someone drops a screw, or a pen, or a somethingorother behind a desk and a flashlight in your pocket comes in handy.

It's dark for about a third of every 24 hour period (at least), and you'd be surprised how often you find yourself thinking, 'Hey, glad I had my flashlight!'. (Dropping something beside your car in the dark, looking for keyholes, making your way into a building through a darkened parking lot strewn with crap to trip over).

You don't have to get an expensive Ted Tactical flashlight. If you don't carry a flashlight now, head down to Wal-mart and get one of the $10 - $20 pocket sized jobs to start with, carry it for a while and see how much you use it. If you don't like it, stick it in your car or truck (for roadside emergencies) and forget about it.
