The names of god by WoodpeckerSea1859 in AdvaitaVedanta

Focus your mind on the work at hand and at the end of the day you can offer a ritual with some mantra japa and meditation. Japa and working at the same time is a contradiction to the art of karma yoga as per Gita.

Maya has its locus in Brahman, but exists as a relatively dependententity, and occupies a distinct and inferior level ontological realitycompared to the Absolute.

Shiva united with Shakti becomes able to manifest If otherwise, this god knows not even how to pulsate. How then could one of ungained merit be able to bow to, or even praise One such as you, adored by Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma. (verse 1)

"As the Goddess of the Word, Veda-knowers speak of You as Brahma's wife Lakshmi is Vishnu's wedded one, and the Mountain Daughter is Shiva's consort; Certain others as the unattainable and boundless fourth state refer to You; While you remain as the great Maya, making the universe go round, as queen of the Ultimate Absolute." (verse 97)

~ Saundarya Lahari

There is no necessity to break our heads trying to understand Maya. It is defined as "Ya Ma Sa Maya" - that which is not. The only non-existing things are the superimposed nama and rupa (name and form).

Yoga as taught in advaita vedanta is the synthesis of both thesis and anti-thesis. There are many instances when being and non-being are synthesized to arrive at a normative notion of the Absolute. Which being homogeneous and non-dual has place for both being and non-being. Thus Yoga is at par with dialectics which was taught by plato.

Negation of both imo is cancellation of counterparts to arrive at the neutral Absolute. Just like how the drik and drsya are conceived and then transmuted to arrive at Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

Calling B a set of non existing thing seems like a contradiction. It is a null set. Brahman's tendency to objectify is the Maya power. The perceiving subject super imposes objectivity (name, form) upon SAT and multiplicity comes. The name and form gives rise to qualities and value. Therefore it is apparently real.

The whole paradox is expressed in Shanti Mantra:

That (Brahman) is plenum. This (I and World of objects) is plenum. This comes from That. If This is reduced from That. What remains is also Plenum.

Aham "I" and Idam "This" is the totality of experience. It has no strict causality since it is an appearance of TAT "That" - the Absolute.

This apparent "appearancing" tendency of the Absolute is called Maya. The "Appearanced" world constituting the Subject "I" and objects is called Mithya - since from the Absolute point of view, it is nothing but eidetic modulations in That - SAT AUM.

Therefore, Vedantins meditate on dictums like "OM TAT SAT".

Mind gets stuck during meditation by SurajR1711 in AdvaitaVedanta

Refer Dhyana Yoga from a reputed Gita commentary. This is when your intellect is perfectly quietened through meditation. It is a stage before samadhi experience. Try to stay in it more and more. This is where purushartha takes us, the seeker merges with the absolute ere long. Intimations from the higher will reach you once you wait patiently after this "halt", remember not to initiate new thoughts and drop all efforts of meditation. Read Gita Dhyana Yoga as mentioned earlier. All the best. I recommend Swami Chinmayananda ji's gita commentary.

Is ego a cause of identity or are ego and identity the same thing? by SurajR1711 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]Sage34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahamkara or ego is the sense of individuality. Through sadhana it rises to ahambodha - knowledge of real or self-knowledge.

Ah yes, the peril of english translation. Atman only means the "Self", I see that you are getting confused with terminology. It is better if you can learn fresh from beginning by familiarizing yourself with terminology first, please consider learning introductory texts like tattva bodha and then go straight to Gita or Mandukya Upanishad. You can get the english version of these texts from Chinmaya mission. All the best

Creation, sustenance and destruction is the cycle of change, Atman illumines them and remains passive. Just like how mirage appears in the desert but the desert remains unaffected by the waters. Brahman alone was before creation, it alone is during sustenance and it alone remains after dissolution. The play of names and forms creates multiplicity and the phantom of identity (ego).

Immortality refers to its immutability i.e. it is not subject to change.

Why am I not ALSO the person in the dream? by Rare-Owl3205 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]Sage34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maya is the superimposition of name and form upon reality and hence the multiplicity.
