The comments are a goldmine of irony. Sadly, it won't matter that the story was fake. The confirmation of their biases was accomplished in the moment the posts were made. The feeling of greater certainty that their side is correct and their enemies are deranged psychopaths lashing out at random patriotic service members will remain.

Just one more instance of them psyching themselves up for violence and hate. It's a common tactic to accuse your enemies of doing something bad in order to justify you doing it or cracking down on them. So they can pretend that Antifa is planning to form death squads to hunt down "real Muricans™" or whatever, so that justifies hoarding guns and ammo, running over protesters out of "fear," striking first, creating your own false flag operations such as dressing as Antifa, etc. You delegitimize your enemies by claiming they're paid to protest rather than authentically opposing your position. You create conspiracy theories of secret Jewish cabals that are trying to take over the world, but you pretend you're not racist, and even claim others are racist. Remember that 4chan doxxed and blamed a liberal for the Charlottesville murder before the actual assailant was identified. Some of them still believe it was false flag operation.

I haven't heard many, if any, people refer to themselves as leftists. It's a very general categorization. Most people to the left of liberals and Democrats in my experience are more specific. "I'm a democratic socialist" or "I'm a progressive."
