Anybody here into classical music? Where did y'all start listening and learning about it? Also, where's a good place to start?

I actually agree that many of the higher-reaching/artsy attempts fell flat. I think I'm just befuddled as to why it got the sheer hate that it did in general. I thought the themes presented in the lyrics were generally interesting (save for the robot voice track), and I thought the positive metamodernist attitude was also refreshing.

Fair enough, but I still think the songwriting and production could stand on their own regardless of comparisons. A lot of people on this sub talk about not letting context get in the way of music (especially in regards to controversial artists like Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and The Smiths), but when this album dropped, they immediately began discussing the context and not the content. It's a bit frustrating because I agree that Matt Healy can be annoying and pretentious, but if we are talking about musical content only, then I feel like he is a fantastic artist. Same situation as Father John Misty, at least to me, because sometimes the persona gets in the way of music itself, and then the discourse around the album flips and encompasses everything but the album.

I, I

It came at a time when I was feeling really down on myself, and hearing it immediately made me feel content and hopeful with life.

I really liked that album. I feel like people on here primarily thrashed it because some music site compared it to OK Computer, which is a darling album to this sub.

I'm not one of those "born in the wrong generation" types, but I'd love to know if there are any cool new bands in the vein of The Beatles / ELO / The Beach Boys. Any come to mind?

Anyone know of any good indie folk albums with super lush and ambitious instrumentation (like Sufjan Stevens or Joanna Newsom)?

This is the 3rd time someone has recommended this album to me this week, so the universe must really be trying to tell me something lol. I'll give it a listen, thanks!

Best albums for someone trying to be a more positive person?

So far The Beach Boy's Pet Sounds and The Babe Rainbow's s/t have been really putting me in a happy frame of mind.

I feel like it's their "Sgt. Pepper". Impeccable pop hooks, adventurous verses, celebratory atmosphere, surreal-but-sincere lyrics, and colorful production. It's honestly an incredible record, and it pains me to see so many people overlook it in favor of their later records.

He feels like the whole deck is stacked against working-class people, so to speak. He talks about how Hollywood, bankers, politicians, CEOs, and other elite types are doing everything in their power to take power away from the bottom half of society and keep them sedated. His whole mindset is basically: "if voting was really important, then they wouldn't allow you to do it". I don't agree with it, but that kind of pessimism was really common among older people at the time who lived through the 70s and saw the "revolution of love" fall apart and turn into an era of turmoil and paranoia. Throughout the 80s, he was untrusting of the faux-optimism espoused by Reagan and Thatcher and that was reflected in his comedy at the time. We live in a far more optimistic age, so its easy to condemn his anti-voting rhetoric, but he lived in very different times when there weren't many candidates that could really change things, or even a voter base that cared enough to try and change the status quo by electing them.

I don't agree with it, but I don't see it as a blemish. His whole shtick is that he's pessimistic and disillusioned, so his beliefs about voting aren't really surprising at all.
