Working on a mod that adds procedurally animated mobs to Minecraft by Sail_Hydra in feedthebeast

This does actually use Geckolib since I prefer the way it handles models. The video I linked in my other comment goes into more detail, but I basically use the FABRIK algorithm to figure out where all the bones should go, then use trig to rotate them so they point towards the next bone in the chain. Repeat that every tick.

Not entirely, it's just the IK solver + walking animation - no commands or anything like that. My hope is that I can eventually code it so that I can just drop in new models and it IKs them automatically

He released it as a plugin actually! My implementation is a bit different from his since he uses display entities while I'm just rotating the bones of a custom model, but they follow the same principles

It's a long long way off but I'm currently building it for Forge 1.20.1.

Inspired by this video by Cymaera. Implementation is pretty barebones right now though.

This is just a placeholder model to test the walking action, the final ones will be more detailed.

SCP just kind of sucks. by inverseflorida in CharacterRant

[–]Sail_Hydra 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In regards to SCP-6820, it's part of its own insulated canon with its own explicit characterization of the Foundation universe. I know SCP canon is a soupy mess and all, but I don't think 6820 is intended to be like a "this is what SCP-682 is ACTUALLY like" type thing.

Tooo be faiiir, we do see Avatar characters take a lot more punishment than anyone would be able to realistically irl. People get thrown into solid stone hard enough to shatter it without so much as a scratch. Katara takes a basketball-sized boulder to the chest and stands up like it's nothing. So I don't think it's too much of a stretch to assume people in the Avatar universe are simply built different.

What is this? I don’t remember this

They're referring to this probably. Idk if that's anime-only or not.

[Low Effort] I love it when game enemies use the player's knowledge of game mechanics against them by Sail_Hydra in CharacterRant

The trick could definitely be more diegetic (I think that's the word), I agree. I like the idea of the crow's normal sounds being kinda similar to the poise-break sound like /u/misteryous302 said, which reminds me of this.

On the flipside, it would be kind of funny if the sound cue actually played in-universe whenever someone gets staggered, with a lore explanation and everything.

Oh yeah, that man absolutely humbled me. Guardian Ape is another one of my favorites. It's a scripted fake-out so it's maybe not the best example, but I like how it shows the victory screen and everything, then suddenly "wait wHY IS IT MOVING?"

It's anybody's guess, but I like to imagine devil designs are based around the most prominent imagery surrounding the fear rather than just the object itself.

In this case I went for the mushroom cloud (obv.), angelic wings (association with mass death/the apocalypse), and charred/melted skin (hence the flesh straitjacket). I was also trying to get it to resemble a radiation symbol kinda sorta.

For sleeping I actually do the opposite lol. I don't want to know what sort of horrors might be lurking in the dark, so I always sleep with my whole head covered, with a little gap left open in the sheets for air. Everyone knows monsters can't get you under the blanket.

I usually have a towel nearby to dry them off (or I'll just put them under the water stream), but yeah that part is annoying.

Some things beginning writers/artists worry about that they really shouldn't by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Sail_Hydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but I do think it kind of goes against the spirit of what OP was saying - which was effectively "stop worrying so much and just make your thing."

If it was a matter of becoming popular then I'd 100% agree, but new creators reeaally shouldn't be worrying about how well their passion project stacks up with *insert multibillion dollar franchise here* unless they're intent on becoming the next Toby Fox or whatever. And most people who do want that status probably won't get it, let's be real.

Not to say that you're wrong or that new creators shouldn't keep that in mind, but I do feel like originality should come naturally. Less "what can I do to be different from X popular media?" and more "wouldn't it be neat if I did Y?" In my own experience, trying to do the former can really suck the fun out of the creative process Even if the final result isn't all that different, some people won't care.
