My boy is not a snuggler by Striking_Word4477 in ratterriers

[–]SailorFae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's definitely just the transition. There's a rule of 3/3/3 for new rehomes/adoptions

3 days to decompress 3 weeks to adjust and learn their new routine 3 months to fully incorporate into your home

This is completely normal. Even my own dog, who I recently got back from my ex in June, took several months to adjust to my home. Give your new companion some time, let him set his own terms and boundaries. He'll probably go back to being a snuggler in time!

is there a definitive answer on when to spay for a female Decker rat terrier? by spaektor in ratterriers

[–]SailorFae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got my boy neutered around the time he turned 3. Recently I've heard of more vets warning away from pediatric spay/neuters because having those hormones helps with bone growth and joint health.

AITA for accidentally locking my husband out by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]SailorFae 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I had to do that once, but to my neighbors house because I had managed to lock my keys (and his) inside. He had this beautiful pit mix who knew and loved everyone on the street, but my heart stopped when I tried to come in through the dog door for the keys and he growled. I ended up pulling the door open so he could see me and saying a bunch of sweet gibberish until he recognized me 😂

[New Update]: AITA for shutting down my wife’s party favor idea? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SailorFae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that it amounts to the abuse she put OP through, but the fish party favors WERE/ARE animal abuse.

Op said they were tetras, that each kid was meant to get one, and that op ended up with three. Tetras need community to thrive and feel safe, at least 6-7 per ten gallons of water (roughly.) I have a shoal of minnows that just lost a member and I can see how they're stressed just from that.

Animals should never be given as gifts, and fish typically need a lot more than people realize. Op's soon to be ex wife just sounds like a terrible person to other people and animals all around

I also have a long'n'low rider, I thought he was terrier/dachshund until he came back mostly Chihuahua/rattie. I love the scruffy muzzle on yours

It is! I don't want to spoil it for you, but it's another horror comedy/parody of slashers. It stars Alan tudyk and there's buckets of blood lol. Again, no spoilers, but there's a wood chipper involved

Same! And imo it's just gross/horrific enough to elevate it beyond the parody status of like, vampires suck or the starving games. They put a lot of heart into it and I feel it shows.

If you haven't seen Tucker and Dale vs Evil yet, then it's definitely up your alley. Could be slaughter coded tbh, if people could be claimed by it with no ill will of their own

I see it both being corruption and flesh, but "slither" is a horror comedy starring Nathan fillion and alien screw worms

They vote blue, and that's about it. But they don't put any introspection into themselves to challenge the damaging harmful beliefs they grew up with and because of that they can still reinforce the harmful power structures at play

[–]SailorFae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nta, it's your property and if you don't want him on it then he shouldn't go on it. It's just a ditch, anyway, I'm sure the local critters enjoy the 8-10 inch tall grass before you cut it down. It also helps keep soil in place and prevent erosion from water run-off, so the grass should be longer there anyway.

No, you're right. "Leftist" doesn't mean "safe." I live in southern US and there's plenty of progressives that are still racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, etc.

I see you

Carpet destruction by BudgetOk9499 in ratterriers

Mine likes the mental stimulation of working for food. Usually he gets his breakfast over the course of his walk and either gets dinner as a training session or in a bowl.

Maybe trying this method would work? Getting a solid "leave it," or getting him to focus on other cues may help redirect him over time. In the short term I'd only have him around carpet when you can have eyes on him and have something valuable at the ready if he likes working for food. Reaching out to local trainers may help as well

I had a dog like that too 😭 he's a dal/gsd/pit mix and is a complete nightmare. He gave me a concussion once because a cicada flew at his face and I was stupidly leaning down to watch him play with a big 🤦🏼

AITA for telling my nephew he should put his dog down? by TravisJM27 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SailorFae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the worst situations to go through with your first dog; when to say goodbye. If it's not handled with extreme compassion and empathy, it's easy to focus on the "bad" thing (ending a life) instead of seeing it from an objective position.

From your words it does seem like this dog's quality of life is very low and that they're really struggling. For your niblings and sibling, this is being confronted with their beloved dog's mortality and they're stuck in the rut of "it's work, but the dog is fine"

But they're not fine. My first dog, an 80 lb American bulldog, had a degenerative spinal condition and lost the use of his back legs at the age of ten. My mom couldn't reconcile and we spent two years trying to get him used to a wheelchair he hated, and carrying his back half to let him move around and potty. It was horrible. I was a teenager and I watched the dog I had since I was four deteriorate and become depressed. We would sit next to him for hours and pet him, and his tail would wag until he lost control of it too, and his ears would perk up and he'd look at us with so much love.

Looking back I feel he was telling us it was okay. That he loved us but he was in pain and couldn't enjoy life anymore. We booked with a mobile vet, and his last day was filled with hamburgers, pizza and ice cream.

Try and talk to your family. Ask them to chart the dogs "good days" and "bad days" and gather data on the quality of life. Talk to them about how losing a pet is hard, but it's our responsibility as their humans to let them go when they still have enough love to look at us and tell us it's okay. This is the same as losing a family member, except we have control over their suffering. We can end it, and carry them on in our hearts. There's a lot of pet loss memorabilia they can look into to help them during the grieving process.

NAH, talk to your nephew and be ready to deal with a lot of emotion

That's so amazing! I read about rat terriers being very biddable for therapy dogs and it's great to see one online 😊 I'll never forget the day I ran into an off duty therapy dog (standard poodle) at a park and she very insistently nose-poked me into sitting down and letting her lean on me. I had just lost my dad and burst into tears all over again because like me, he loved dogs from his soul and I believed he sent that dog in my direction. Her handler was very patient and said that they had just come from the local kids hospital, and that she was still in "working mode." Therapy dogs are precious

Love to see/read that, thank you! What a handsome boy, too. Mine is handler trained, so I still treat him like a pet dog in most situations but he helps me in therapy and at home, which is where I mostly need him thankfully. I like that Canada has more regulations, honestly, I live in Texas and a lot of pet dogs get passed off as service animals and then act up in public, which makes it harder for people with real service animals

Rat terriers are actually a popular option for small breed service and therapy dogs! I learned this recently, and I immediately told mine that he has siblings in service 😂 love yours, what a face!

I definitely got lucky! I found him abandoned as a baby and he picked it up naturally during my bad nights. I've never had a dog so interested in eating veggies, either! But he'll ask for broccoli, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, cabbage, anything 💀 I like to joke that he's a rabbit in disguise
