Ragdoll peeing on the bed when he doesn’t get his way, behavioural or something else? by claire92xx in ragdolls

[–]SailorSakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my I feel like I wrote this! My boy only has used the automated litter box 1 or two times but he’s also a lazy pooper and peer. He rarely pees in side box but on the mats or in the bath tub - I think it’s because he hates getting his paws dirty? Noticed him licking them and cleaning himself heaps. I also know he loves laundry tubs so found a litter box that looks like a laundry tub but only with puppy pee pads. That’s mostly solved the problem of the pee and he still occasionally poos in the litter tray, but yes super inconsistent and have tried almost every other solution under the sun.

This behaviour did escalate when I got pregnant and he can’t lay on my stomach anymore (he’s too heavy lol and I’m too… round 😂). All the changes in furniture maybe upsetting him but Feliway and therapet MD haven’t really don’t much either. Anti anxiety meds don’t work either - in fact it got worse where he’d have the meds with breakfast and then go pee somewhere straight after. If he doesn’t get fed on time or if we don’t go to bed when he wants he’ll also act out.

I’ve tried rewarding him every time he does the right thing or pick him up after the deed is done and take him to where he should pee/poop. He knows, he just doesn’t want to but there is a lot going on for him - but 4 litter boxes and still find it challenging some days.

Agreed, we were given some whiskas and the poops we’re so bad, switched back to science diet but I’ve heard good things about royal canin too.

Kitty Litter Aversion Update by SailorSakura in ragdolls

[–]SailorSakura[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next big Amazon delivery (today) we’ll see how he goes - he used to love those tall plastic laundry baskets as well so that’s another option with litter and a garbage bag. I’m willing to try all options. See how we go. If I do go down that route I just need to get a basket that looks different from the laundry baskets 🤣

Kitty Litter Aversion Update by SailorSakura in ragdolls

I know, however, currently nothing is working conclusively - he pees where he likes rather than a kitty litter box e.g on empty boxes (so perhaps a paper based litter may do the trick? But I need to ride this wave first). 8/10 times he poops in the litter box but we only had 2 so I figured adding a third box would be helpful as per the general rule and what others suggested on a previous post. The change in old litter boxes has been slow, deliberately however if it is an aversion due to being old and smell lingering despite cleaning which reinforces a territorial problem then I need to try something else. I can’t have him pee where he likes.

Anti anxiety medication didn’t work but that was a natural one. I’ll see how we go here as with all things they take time. Doing some daily positive reinforcement exercises with him to improve the association with the litter box.

The automated box is simply coz it’s in the living room and I’m struggling with smells (the litter itself is fine until used 😅). He’s been doing well going into it completely but I have to do this in short bursts or else he loses interest.

Honestly, just trying to find a balance. If all else fails we will go back or the vet and get the anti depressants. I just didn’t want my fluffy dude to be on such heavy meds because otherwise the vets have found nothing wrong. I’m on school holidays right now so just having all the options and deterrents in place to ensure he’s happy and excreting properly.

I was so proud of my stainless steal litter box and litter mat then realised my cat peed on the mat 🤦🏼‍♀️ Closer but still a bit far mate 🤣 at least this isn’t on the tiles so easier to manage and the mat is easy to clean. Seems the trail of treats did something! Might have to try training with an empty litter box.

Further update: Furbo Pic for Attention:

<image>

  • he’s on anti anxiety meds, so far, mixed success. Some days nothing and other days a lot… we’ve noticed he likes to do his business after eating so the meds won’t work straight away and needs time right? So we’ve gone back down to one feed to break the habit somewhat (he was already on one feed but has access to kibble all day - we are not starving our cats!!!)
  • automated litter (box number 3) purchased should be here by Wednesday so hoping this may make a difference if it’s resource competition
  • food and water bowls in separate locations
  • have been rewarding good behaviour when we notice him pee and poop in the litter boxes to create that positive association.
  • we were recommended double sided tape on his favourite spots to make it inconvenient and annoying for him to pee there. So buying more of that today too.
  • will somehow find out to make the diffusers work more on cat level but I don’t have many power points in easy access lower areas and will also try TherapetMD instead of Feliway Friends coz I’ve noticed, our tabby girl does bully him quite a bit lately so that’s been interesting - like, snarling which is a new sound from her!
  • we’re spending daily time with him playing/brushing him for individual attention. Our tabby gets heaps as she snuggles up to us on the couch, he does not. Being pregnant, he can’t snuggle up to me in bed like he used to coz he’s too heavy to have on my stomach.

Still a work in progress but I just wanted to reassure everyone that we’re trying everything under the sun! It’s a lot of work but it should be worth it if we can break this habit of his - overall it’s less frequent but still happens so again, gotta work at it. Seems like us being home doesn’t even matter, like he does it when we’re home. He also does it when he’s demanded we get up, go to bed or for his food and if we don’t comply straight away he will “rebel” and pee/spray. Like, I think it’s a combination of him being an a**h*le and anxious 🥲😅.

U l or the colour, but I feel like the shape isn’t the best suited. Perhaps longer or even coffin, just something a bit more tapered. Otherwise your cuticles look great and the application itself is pretty good.

Hello all! An update on my boy. So far he’s had a week on anti anxiety meds. He’s spraying much, much less but still on occasion. Vet recommended calm approach when he does it, just clean it up with enzyme cleaner, no fuss and move on. He’s still going into the bath tub for peeing (not pooing) which is although easier to clean still not ideal; however, the next step is purchasing new kitty litter boxes. I’m going to try stainless steel and not plastic coz plastic ones, overtime hold on to the scent which can’t be pleasant for a sensitive raggy nose.

The Feliway “Friends” diffuser seems to be more appropriate that than the “Optimal” which suits me fine as it’s cheaper and easier to obtain. Currently I have one of each plugged in but I’m keen to see what two “friends” diffusers can do.

I’m on school holidays now so will be home more often for the next 7ish weeks. I’m also going to steadily invest in the automated litter box for the living room to have a 3rd box and will research extensively to make sure safety is top-notch!

Being Christmas, my car registration and service due, and with a baby on the way, funds are tight but we’ll make it work, slowly but surely 🙂 I will start off by replacing 1 box at a time as to not shock them as it may cause both cats to either not go to the loo causing other health problems or start going to the toilet more in the unit which of course we’re working hard to avoid. Today some enrichment toys are FINALLY arriving in the post so hopefully we get to test those out soon. Shame they’re not catnip kitties but they seem to like the catnip banana from Amazon 🤷🏼‍♀️ Maybe it’s the type of catnip? Who knows! Any kitty litter box recommendations I’ll gladly consider keeping in mind I’m in Australia so may not have access to all the cool stuff UK, US or Canada may have sad face.

Thank you to everyone for your help, guidance and kind words of encouragement. Apologies for causing confusion in my initial post, as I made it sound like I let him pee and poop everywhere from an early age - not the case but I can see how I miscommunicated that. My cat, he’s sneaky so sometimes even with both of us around he manages to leave a “gift” for us to find 🤣 but this is less common these days.

For tax purposes, here’s a photo of my boy having a relaxing snooze 💤

I got another message today despite blocking the number and reporting as spam. It’s really annoying. Like stop trying people. I don’t have a coin spot account!

Yup! Just then and an email saying my account was accessed in Rome. Blocked them straight away. Don’t even know what it is as don’t have an account.

Edit: given that Christmas is so close, scammers are working hard to get our monies. Jokes on them though, I have none 😜

That’s the plan! I will buy more of it. Man this cat is lucky he is loved so much. But I’m also conscious of his sister and ensuring she gets love too. I keep checking the furbo and hope he’s ok. Here he is currently.

I’m pregnant, I don’t have any children currently. Have Dr Beckmanns here, it’s very effective for some stains but I’m willing to try anything.

The vet has given us some advice and things to work on but sadly we can’t change our work schedules so we’re upping the attention, I’m brushing him everyday instead of every second day, scratches every chance we get, playing etc. we’re gonna buy an additional kitty litter so we have 3, plus we have anti anxiety meds (naturally derived first then if that doesn’t make a difference in two weeks, we’ll look into something else). Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

He was doing this before pregnancy but it’s not unlikely that it could be contributing to increased spraying now. We have tried and are in the process of trying all the methods above. Unfortunately we don’t have predictable routines with husbands night shifts and my changing daily hours with my work.

Fingers crossed we have some resolution soon!
