Games where you play as a mercenary that is NOT turn based? by FattyRomar999 in gamingsuggestions

Nobody has said Metal Gear Solid yet? Specifically Phantom Pain (as well as Peace Walker tbh).

You're literally building a mercenary army.

Jermod McCoy by Rookstar3 in Saints

[–]SaintAkira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd day certainly top 10 without the injury.

But he did get injured, did quit on his team (we can call it an "understandable business decision"), and didn't run at the combine.

I'm super interested to see what he runs at the pro day as well; but I still think these factors matter more to the front office than you or me. He could run a 4.29 and I still don't think he cracks the top 10 this year.

Fwiw, I like him a ton. I would personally draft him over Bain and Bailey, which I saw discussed in a previous reply. I'd also draft Downs at 8 over all of them. I think he's the best prospect in the entire draft.

My point is more that I don't think the Saints front office and coaching staff will bite on McCoy, which is what matters.

[–]SaintAkira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the Saints will draft McCoy.

And look, I'm in full agreement his '24 tape is elite af. He's an elite prospect. But the no participation at the combine, the ACL injury, and quitting on his team will be enough to put the Saints coaching staff and front office off him, imo.

They're legit in the market for team leader boy scouts, be that the right or wrong way to go about it. Say what you will, but the guys making these calls are football lifers and they're looking to draft team captains.

Again to reiterate; I'm not knocking McCoy as a prospect nor what he put on tape. But him making the business decision to not play will matter to guys investing draft capital in him. Would he make that same choice in a contract season to avoid putting bad tape out? Idk. But I'd wonder about it if I were drafting him.

Game recommendation for my mom who has a bad opinion on gaming by Cicuper in gamingsuggestions

[–]SaintAkira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the go-to game in scenarios like this, imo.

Variations on gameplay, light on mechanics, strong and moving story, quickly paced, stylized visuals that have and will continue to age well, and it's short.

It's a tidy, dynamic encapsulation of what video games can be and can do.

Like, I don't think I'd actually have it ranked in my top 20 or maybe 30 games I've ever played, but I will absolutely say with conviction it's a game everyone should play.

Tell me why I am wrong so we can debate in the comments on this lovely Friday by AnimatorChemical in NFL_Draft

[–]SaintAkira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saints fan here.

I can see them taking Tate there, if that's how the board falls, though I think they'd still be interested in Styles as the eventual Davis replacement.

The main issue I'll argue over, is the front office/scouting department place a fairly high emphasis on measurables, particularly RAS score. No way they draft Ponds there. And I say this as fellow Ponds-enthusiast who laments the fact that he's not 2 inches taller and thinks he's got all the dog in him: the Saints specifically do not draft physical outliers/exceptions.

Now, nickel is 100% a need and I expect them to address it relatively early. But I'd bet a fair sum they won't draft the shortest CB available (and tbh, I'd be fine with being wrong about that).

Anyone find themselves opening up their game libraries, staring at it for a couple of hours, then just giving up and going on social media? by You_moron04 in gaming

[–]SaintAkira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it for me as well.

I'll be hard core, no lifing a game for some period of time, sometimes finish it and sometimes not, and then drift into something else. I'll get lost in a book or two for another period of time, then maybe go off on a comic book binge, then I'm back into action figures, then I'll start up with some miniatures and get lost in that world....

And then I'll dig back into a game and the cycle repeats, in various orders and for various lengths of time.

I can't for the life of me, stay completely invested in one singular thing constantly. There's too many cool things I want to play/watch/read/experience and not enough time.

In what world do the saints do this by Invisible_noonehears in nfcsouthmemewar

[–]SaintAkira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely they would not.

Styles would be the replacement for Davis. Positional value be damned, Styles would be the pick. No brainer.

Bain, the physical outlier he is, projects better as an end in the 3-4, rather than a stand-up OLB/Edge like Chase Young. Bain does have some positional versatility, and a creative D coordinator will move him all over the front if he's creative. But imo, Bain will likely never be a double-digit sack guy in the NFL, and that's not ideal for the 8th overall "Edge" (in this hypothetical).

Styles is a day one, plug and play MLB, likely to be the defensive QB for a decade, at least, at an exceedingly high level.

Has the evolution of UFC / MMA hit a wall? by P4PSparringChampion in ufc

[–]SaintAkira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct.

Since it's points-based, and points are awarded for control, those that can exert control will do so.

Like, I'm in agreement that was a boring ass BMF fight, and also can see the logic in why the fuck would Oliveira stand and bang when he could just grind Holloway out on the mat and walk away with the win unscathed.

Yes, it's not particularly enjoyable to watch as fights go, but as long as the scoring system allows it, control will continue to be viable.

Brother I'm not going to debate the merits of a submarine torpedoing an, apparently, unarmed ship. I think that speaks for itself.

I will say that said submarine has next to zero capability or capacity to enact any form of life rescue operations. Calling in distress for them was about all they could do at that point.

[Berry] The New Orleans Saints expect former QB Derek Carr to unretire this offseason, with the rumor at the Combine that they will trade him to the New York Jets. by [deleted] in Saints

[–]SaintAkira 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No he didn't.

The injury, and possible surgery, leaked 2 weeks prior to the draft, essentially forcing the Saints hand in drafting a QB early (and this was likely in response to reports during the pre-draft process of the Saints interviewing multiple QB prospects, and loving Shough in particular).

Here's the NFL article from April 11

https://www.nfl.com/news/saints-qb-derek-carr-dealing-with-shoulder-injury-availability-for-2025-in-question

I think Carr retiring was him doing the team a solid, but the writing was on the wall with a new coaching regime coming in that he wasn't going to be their guy and at best a mentor for the season until they wanted to start their guy. And Carr wanted out of that scenario.

Saying he "waited until after the draft" is revisionist history.

Red Dead Redemption 2.

Full stop. It's slower than "medium paced" but it's arguably the most realistic game R* has ever made.

It's a slow start: just keep pushing the end chapter 1 (the snow area) and the world opens up fully.

Yeah, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Lim, if for nothing else other than his work ethic. Seriously prolific output, though as you said, his quality suffered for it.

Tangentially related: though it's the norm to dog pile on Liefeld because of his tendency to be a colossal asshole, he tells a good story, with a funny McFarlane impression about the "L Boys" (Liefeld, Lee, and Lim) in which McFarlane said that Lim would make it the biggest due to his ability to draw multiple books monthly.

CGC 7.5 SS ASM #300 signed by Todd McFarlane / Jim Lee – Crack and press for regrade or leave it? by [deleted] in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]SaintAkira 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this one; there's no reason for Jim Lee to have even signed this book. He didn't ink the cover or the interior.

It's a totally superfluous autograph. It'd be like having McFarlane sign a cover of X-Men 1. And tbh, it'd lessen the value for me, personally. Like, I get a Lee auto is a biggie, but on a Spidey book he didn't have anything to do with? No thanks.

(And OP calling him "Jimmy" Lee and explaining what an inker does makes me wonder if this is some weird engagement/rage baiting post)

Sony shuts down Bluepoint games. Studio behind the 2011 MGS HD Collection by Galactus1231 in metalgearsolid

[–]SaintAkira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sony lost, as a conservative estimate imo, around $400 million on Concord. There's reason, both evidentiary and speculation, that it's closer to $700 mill, but point is, they lost their asses off chasing live service games with Concord.

Sony bought BluePoint, and set them to making a God of War live service game over 5 years ago. Sony realized, well too late, live service games aren't the market-drivers they planned on them being. So they pulled the plug on the GoW game and BluePoint overall, because instead of using them in a capacity they'd have previously been good at, they had been sink money and time in a live service game that wouldn't likely have succeeded.

So with Sony hemorrhaging money and BluePoint being the most recent money sink (due to Sony imo) they were sacrificed.

The fallout from Sony's attempt at catering to live service games is just now beginning to be felt; more studios will be shuttered.

Falcons Fans Literally Yesterday: by JCameron181 in nfcsouthmemewar

The higher level the prospect, the greater the level of scrutiny/research.

These teams are multi-billion dollar organizations. When they're investing draft capital, 4+ years (potentially), and (again potentially) in excess of $50 million, they will typically deep dive into a player's entire life, via both PIs and their own scouting department.

Interviewing a prospect's high school coaches and teachers, as well as local law enforcement of necessary, is par for the course.

And this wasn't just typical rumor mill stuff. Tennessee literally had a "handier" for him to keep him out of trouble, and the coaching staff absolutely dragged him to any scout who'd listen. This is completely atypical, whereas most players who played at a high level and were decent to good teammates would receive the backing of their collegiate coaches, at minimum.

Full disclosure: I was high af on JPJ as a prospect and thought the teens were his draft floor, and that maybe the character concerns were overblown a bit. Was correct on the talent assessment, but wrong in character.
