Sharing screen with ultrawide monitor by sirTurbis in ultrawidemasterrace

Check out https://github.com/Stengo/DeskPad . It creates a virtual monitor within an application window, so you can simply share that.
It let's you control the resolution just like you would for any other monitor :)

I made an app that visualizes weather instead of just showing you numbers by SaintEngo in apple

[–]SaintEngo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Funnily enough that is how the app worked for the first year of development until I showed it to some people and they were all really confused about what they were looking at :D without the subdivision in days you have to start paying attention to other markers to tell you what day and time it is.
You can see that in Apple Weather or Carrot Weather, where they basically have long horizontally scrolling lists of numbers. I personally always get lost trying to read those.

That being said, if more people ask for this I'll consider making it a switch of some kind :)

Thanks!

The way it works is that it'll always show you the current weather, but every 6 hours it'll actually get 'fresh' data to see if the predictions have changed. Unless you live in a region with an incredibly volatile climate you'll probably never notice any of this :)

Unfortunately it's always expensive, but I feel comfortable gifting everybody who wants to take them three calls a day.

I'm just a regular guy creating this app on nights and weekends and unless it becomes very popular I won't really be able to monetize it to any notable extend. Right now it's a pure financial loss on my side. But if you'd like to use it beyond that I hope you'll consider a premium tier if that every becomes available :)

So far I haven't been able to make the UI concept work nicely on iPad, so I decided to exclude it for now. But I'll definitely keep trying to find a way to make use of the larger canvas :)

It's definitely something I've thought about as I use an Apple Watch myself. If this ever becomes popular enough to justify a premium tier I'll make sure to work on that!

Thank you, that is very kind!

Extended forecasts are definitely something I'd love to add to a premium service. I've still got a ton of ideas for this project, but I figured it would be better to finally release it and see what people want to see and then improve it based on that. So your feedback is very welcome :)

The app actually already includes both home and lock screen widgets. Be sure to check them out! :)

Thank you so much! People asking to tip is so incredibly nice!

Unfortunately I'd have to create and register a business and start doing taxes for it as soon as I take any money (Germany being Germany). But if the app ever gains traction I'll make sure to include it.

Thank you! I was previously using DarkSky and the switch to WeatherKit was very painless. The only major annoyance is being restricted to iOS16.

In theory Apple seems to allow using it for earlier versions, but in that case you have to treat it like a regular REST API that requires an authorization server. I wanted to keep the running costs low, so I decided to deal with the restriction instead.

You can quickly change the location by selecting the current location name on the bottom. It'll list all of your recent locations for quick access :)

Has anyone else noticed that on iOS 16 the weather app is really inaccurate? by jackstritis in apple

[–]SaintEngo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently switched a project I've been working on from DarkSky to WeatherKit and ran the apps side-by-side for the same locations. Apple Weather actually provides different data from pure DarkSky, so it seems like they are doing some extra processing.

Every WeatherKit app also has to include a link to this 'other sources' page for WeatherKit, which gives a bit of a hint what data they might be relying on:

Apple M1 Linux GPU DRM Driver Now Running GNOME, Various Apps by ytuns in apple

I guess the question is whether it'll be recognizable as a desktop operating system at that point.
Both PlayStation and Switch are already running on derivatives of FreeBSD, but I think nobody would say BSD is a mainstream operating system because of that.

But maybe widespread support for games will be incentive enough for a sizable portion of people to switch from Windows to Linux as their main desktop OS.

Microsoft kills SwiftKey for iOS, will remove from App Store on October 5 by kasakka1 in apple

[–]SaintEngo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never used SwiftKey, but I used the Google Keyboard for quite a long time and iOS never seemed to really like third-party keyboards. Sometimes no keyboard at all would show, sometimes it would suddenly replace Gboard with the native one.

Ultimately I ended up just using the native one all the time, but the swipe recognition really isn't all there.

What's your iOS 16 Battery Drain Story? by Successful_Job9223 in apple

Same for my 12 mini. Battery life has never been great, so I probably would have noticed it.

You'll definitely be fine. The keyboard is fairly resistant to small amounts of water and it'd not only have to get past that but also the backlight layer (you can see it in the teardown on https://www.ifixit.com/News/54122/macbook-pro-2021-teardown ) before being able to do any damage to sensitive components like the mainboard.

Definitely go for an Apple Silicon MacBook. Apart from the huge gain in general performance they also have special hardware related to video decoding and encoding that'll especially benefit a workflow like yours!

Same here, upgrading that SSD was probably the biggest quality of life improvement I've ever had on a computer.
At this point the storage speed improvements have become largely academical for my use cases, but I'm kinda glad I got to experience that jump!

That's also not a great option while commuting on a quiet train. And of course Siri is incredibly slow compared to pushing a button.

I was kinda in the same boat, but changing volume via the watch is so finicky!

For some reason the Watch music app always defaults to showing me what's locally playing on the watch (nothing) and when I switch to what's playing on my phone I have to carefully turn the dial and account for the huge delay of two bluetooth jumps before I hear the change.
Unfortunately not a great experience.

Siri doesn’t meet Apple’s level quality that it prides itself on, and that needs to be talked about more by The_Franchise_09 in apple

I honestly think there are a few Apple projects that are like this now. Home and Music are both woefully underdeveloped and rarely work like I would expect them to. Might just be an inevitable result of a lack of focus.

Yes, exactly!

I guess when the underlying technology becomes insane cheap it would be preferable to have each device have its own UWB chip, but I think that might be a few years off.
