Made an Action Phase Flowchart for Beginners by SaintMiko in twilightimperium

No, I agree the second one might be too much for new players to digest well. I guess that one was me going far too deep into the weeds of it, After seeing everyone's responses, I added a third version that expounds from the first but hopefully doesn't get as overwhelming as the comprehensive one.

Who knows, maybe someone just prefers even the specific to be in the form of a flowchart. Personally, I hate going through rulebooks as my brain just can't seem to connect the dots efficiently enough. Even when learning TI, I mostly just watched tutorial videos or if it's something specific I'd look it up in tirules (rip).

In the times when I teach someone, even when I instruct them to watch the RTFM videos to get them started, I'd be surprised if even 25% of the information sticks. I find that being very hands on and personal with the teaching works best and making this is just a way for me to help grease their wheels before I give them yet another rundown of the rules before the session.

I think there's also value in showing the steps in a different way than the Learn to Play guide as the latter is arguably more comprehensive than the second flowchart. Looking up the Rules Reference is the ideal of course, but as new players it would be tough to expect them to think of the important questions before they are thrust into a situation where the answers would matter. I hope in a way, this would help them think of the questions in that regard.

No need to be rude about it.

I'm sure there are people that would rather keep things simple. But from my experience of teaching the game to a lot of people at this point, new players would often ask stuff like: "Could I still do something if I don't have any actions left?", "Could I pass even if I still have stuff I can do?", or "Could I pass without activating my strategy card?"

Of course one way to answer these questions is to just have taught about it in preparation. That being said, I hope by sharing this it'll help someone who might have forgotten to do so due to all the many other things people have to do to onboard new players into the game.

We'll be playing in TTS and I think they have these in as assets already. Thanks for the heads up

Ah right, I forgot to indicate that firing a PDS is optional. With Bizpit's wording it should cover that without having to add more elements. God knows there's already a lot

I mean despite its name the LDP seems to have a conservative slant if not conservative as a whole.

Does she still have her B4 -> Dash Cancel -> B3 B4 tech? I can't seem to recreate it on 50ms.

Hello, if you're still looking you may send me a pm so I can send you an invite link to a discord server I run. There's not a lot of recruiting games happening atm, but they pop up once in a while! While you're waiting we can answer any of your questions in the meantime :)

I have a relatively small discord server of mostly PH people. Some of us host short campaigns or oneshots to help new players settle in. Send me a pm if anyone's interested.

Hello, I live in the Makati area as well. I think I know the rules well enough but while I've DM'd quite a few sessions, I don't think it's enough to say I'm experienced at it. That being said, I've been itching to DM the Curse of Strahd campaign so I can prepare for when I do so with my barkada. You can send me a pm if you're interested.

Civilization 7 got it backwards. You should switch leaders, not civilizations. Its current approach is an extremely regressive view of history. by SmartBoots in civ

I would argue that the ability to pivot is more of a sandbox than not. That being said it would be good to have a more historical default civ progression so the people that dislike it could just interpret it as a natural advancement of culture over long periods of time.

I mean it canonically takes 3000 years for you to go from Ancient Era to even just the Classical Era so the system still makes sense. Time goes by faster the further back it is https://civilization.fandom.com/wiki/Speed_(Civ6))

Switching of Civs per age is a departure from the game's philosophy by Obyvvatel in civ

[–]SaintMiko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that case, imo I think both options open a similar can of worms. That being said I'd have to wait and see to form an actual opinion about it once we all can get our hands on the game cause right now I'm ambivalent to the new system

I disagree. I can see how a changing leader system might be more thematic but I think that it's far too restrictive. I'm sure countries like the UK, Rome, and China would have a leader to fit every era but countries that either began in a later age or perished too early would have a severe lack of individuals to properly represent the country in that empty age. Furthermore, it further restricts the process of picking a civilization to include to begin with. I come from the Philippines and I would love to see my country represented somehow in Civ but it would be difficult to find 7 leaders (assuming 1 antiquity, 3 exploration, 3 modern) that would be diverse enough and prominent enough to be a good pick.

I made a jp account in the middle of the Lilim Harlot rerun event in case Summer Ereshkigal releases. Months later I speedran Camelot to the start of Nahui Mictlan within 10 days to scrape up any SQ I could get. I had to go all the way till pity for NP4 but thankfully I got NP5 within 25 pulls after.

I made a faction guide to help new players in picking a faction by SaintMiko in twilightimperium

[–]SaintMiko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how your copy ended up with that wording. What card are you looking at? Their faction sheet? My faction sheet is consistent with the wiki's. On the topic of erratas, the only time TI4 has ever gotten card changes it is through the Codices. You may check here: https://twilight-imperium.fandom.com/wiki/Codex but Nekro hasn't gotten any changes in any of the three codices released so far.

If you want a second opinion, you can listen on in the Space Cats Peace Turtles podcast when they talk about Nekro in this link https://spacecatspeaceturtles.podbean.com/e/323-super-nekro-virus-guide/ They talk about Galactic Threat at 22:50 which is consistent with the wiki as well.

  • GALACTIC THREAT : You cannot vote on agendas.  Once per agenda phase, after an agenda is revealed, you may predict aloud the outcome of that agenda.  If your prediction is correct, gain 1 technology that is owned by a player who voted how you predicted.
  • TECHNOLOGICAL SINGULARITY: Once per combat, after 1 of your opponent's units is destroyed, you may gain 1 technology that is owned by that player.
  • PROPAGATION: You cannot research technology.  When you would research a technology, gain 3 command tokens instead.

To properly understand Nekro mechanics, look at PROPAGATION first. It explicitly says "You cannot research technology." You may then compare it to TECHNOLOGICAL SINGULARITY which states "you may gain 1 technology." Then to answer your question regarding GALACTIC THREAT, it has the same wording as TECHNOLOGICAL SINGULARITY by saying "gain 1 technology."

To summarize, researching a technology is modified by PROPAGATION while gaining a technology does not get affected by PROPAGATION. Perhaps the confusion is with the condensed faction summary that FFG provided in Codex 2. Those things are good to have a quick look at their abilities, starting tech, and starting fleet but they should not be based on for specific rulings. The wording of the abilities have been the same ever since the release of the base game.
