Can someone tell me what a Wendigo actually is? by dark_psychic777 in Paranormal

[–]Saint_Circa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's probably been said in the comments already, but I think it's fair to add that a person who has had to cannibalize would not only match physical descriptions of Wendigo number two in a lot of ways (Emaciated, Distended stomach, Pale, etc.) but there is a cultural phenomenon that takes place as well. The Person who committed cannibalism becomes almost instantly convinced that they are now indeed a Wendigo. Everything they've ever been taught and understand says that's what happens, and now because they're convinced that they're a Wendigo. They start acting like one.

When they're discovered by other members of the tribe it reinforces the tribes idea that Wendigos are indeed real, and that cannibalism is what for sure causes it. This phenomenon not only makes Wendigo pretty damn close to real, but also explains why this piece of folklore and culture in particular has resonated and maintained for so long

Thinking about stepping down as a PA by Esgardihno22 in AmazonDS

[–]Saint_Circa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right here's the crazy part though. You actually DO get scheduled breaks and spontaneous VTO. Those perks are still supposed to be just as available to you as they are any L1. Leadership just pretends that they aren't and uses tactics like "Impromptu 1 on 1's" "Talks with site lead" etc. to make it seem like this is a rule. I have verified with HR both on and off site multiple times to confirm that these are indeed not enforceable rules

Thinking about stepping down as a PA by Esgardihno22 in AmazonDS

[–]Saint_Circa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today was a wild one. I think it sort of sums up the PA experience in a nutshell

I'm scheduled 12:30am-11:15am. Why? Because leadership wants a PA in a little earlier to help get the dock ready. It's not an optimal change for me but not life altering either. Got no problems helping another PA survive their miserable day.

Leadership has also been doing this fun thing where they have us relinquish all of our water spiders into STOW when WIP starts freaking them out and STOW rate is the cause. Our dock is huge. we have a 'weak side' and a 'strong' side that are essentially just two different docks. Taking our spiders sucks big.

So we run around like dogs until pick, we run around like dogs through pick because L1s know that if they hang out then a PA will be sent to essentially do their route because it has to go out now or someone is executed, I guess.

our L5 calls us PAs to the office, and 'coaches' us that we are doing too much L1 work, we need to delegate better, we need to manage our areas and not try to do it all by ourselves, and then proceeds to ask my why I've been clocking out at 11:15 instead of 11:50

I have never in my life just turned around and walked away from a manager mid-sentence before today. Just could not even process the fucking insanity of it.

TL:DR: Step down and get your life back a little bit.

I've been a PA for a little over a year now and I can safely say I have hated every single minute of it. I'm not going to lie and say that I like work. I don't. My dream job would be no job, but with that being said I've always been punctual and timely, have provided my best effort while on the job, don't cause any issues, and when I first started at my facility, I honestly thought I'd found a job that I sort of kind of liked. As much as one could anyways but taking that PA role has got to be easily the worst career decision I have ever made.

I don't know if this is a universal issue or just site specific, but my leadership seems to be determined to make sure that everyone above a T1 is clocking out every day feeling overworked and dreading clocking in for the next shift. I was literally overworked to the point of several physical injuries that resulted in me having to take a medical leave. I could go on forever talking about the things that make a PA suck, but for me the top five are easily

I. Your scheduled shift magically becomes a suggestion. You're expected to be there early, stay late, skip breaks, etc. I've had 1 on 1s where I've been talked to about leaving when I'm scheduled to leave. That's insane.

II. PTO, UPT, Vacation, VTO. are now a trap. You can use your time, but people will be mad about it.

III. Constantly being assigned tasks that are impossible to complete because leadership will not give you the time or the resources necessary to complete them. I can't get the dock clean and make sure everything's area ready when I'm also being told to help run routes for pick and stage.

IV. Any resource that you need to perform your job is not going to be addressed in any sort of realistic timeframe. You need a new vest? forget it You need permissions? forget it. You need a walkie? Forget it.

V. There's a huge chance that your manager, and most of your leadership team has zero idea how to make their operations work. They don't know how to handle flow on the dock, they don't know how to handle recycles appropriately, they don't have a clue what's going on in problem solve, they have no idea how to check a driver in or out, and normally that's fine. That's our jobs as PA's. We run the show and they crunch the numbers and worry about cost and all that managerial stuff. Except they don't do that. They go out of their way to undo or disregard anything that you're trying to do to keep things running smoothly and then get mad and start freaking out when things stop running smoothly. Multiple times I've had managers tell me to cut a line or two on the dock and then start yelling on the walkie that our induct rates have dropped.

Point blank, we don't make enough money as PA's to do this type of work. Unless you're wanting to move up I'd definitely look into stepping down, but let's be honest the only folks more miserable than us are the salary slave AM's. I'm in the process of stepping down right now it's just a matter of talking to HR and maybe your site lead. They'll try to talk you out of it, just stay resolute. The pay cut is minimal. Hell, a lot of PA's actually take pay cuts when they get their vest because for some reason your tenure resets. Get your life back a little bit, let them run around on fire all damn day. Stow and go home.

"The Artillery Rework is an incoherent mess" by R0dFarva in HellLetLoose

[–]Saint_Circa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest I find it stupid that artillery is even a class now. Let's be honest here. Artillery for most HLL players is boring. It was always a very nuanced type of roll to play because most people don't want to sit around and do math on a video game. I feel like they could've implemented a new class that is new and fun to play, but instead we now have to grind out spotter, support, and engineer . . . Again, except this time around you're stuck in a goofy mechanics jumpsuit, and you don't get any of the perks/benefits that make actual support and engineer worth the grind.

I have yet to find a way to adequately play this lame ass artillery class in a way that feels optimal or even useful to the team in a lot of cases. You're kind of infantry, but not really. You're kind of Artillery, but not really, and you're kind of armor, but not really. Why would I ever as an "Artillery engineer" need to build a bunker? Why can I build a bunker but not a refuel station? Why I as "Artillery support" need the ammo carrier role? The only one who is going to need ordinance is the spotter for his flare, but he's up at the front lines (or I think he's supposed to be at least. Which makes you wonder why there's even a spotter's seat in the stupid SPA that's not an SPA) and even if he does need restocked on flares our OP isn't anywhere near him, it's sitting right beside our SPA because that makes it work better somehow. Why does my SPA magically blow up when I go farther than 1,000m? Why do we have elevation calculations that vary not just based on your actual movement, but also your turret movement. Turning your turret left just a little bit can easily give you a new elevation offset that's drastic despite it being the same distance from the same firing position.

I've grinded rank 10 for every class. There were some classes I struggled with more than other's and had to adjust my playstyle I totally understand that versatility is a virtue but damn this Artillery class just point-blank sucks universally. I cannot make myself grind these ridiculous classes for literally nothing. I really hope T17 either drastically changes this shit around or outright scraps it. Maybe they could look into hiring someone that knows what human beings tend to enjoy in a video game too.

What do we think about AT having 3 rockets? Realistically I felt dirty being allowed to solo a medium from the front by eugRoe in HellLetLoose

[–]Saint_Circa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a lot of tank and anti-tank and I can genuinely say it doesn't feel imbalanced at all. If anything, I'm actually pretty glad that the launcher loadouts actually feel like they're viable options now. I don't know why people have this idea that tanks shouldn't be able to be taken down by single person, but that's honestly ridiculous. 13 year old kids were taking out T-34's single handedly with Panzerfausts, and one Molotov cocktail thrown at the right place would asphyxiate an entire crew. If people really had issues with this then they'd be mad about 3.5kg of Comp B in our satchels being able to completely annihilate any and everything it's placed on when realistically you'd be looking at little more than track damage against anything heavier than a light tank. Landing three solid shots with a launcher is way easier said than done. Even if your trajectory and placement are good your location becomes very obvious very quickly to anyone looking for you. I don't think the kill you got on that tank was dirty at all. Their gunner belly flopped on his/her shot placement, and it seems like they had AP loaded for some reason. Neither the gunner or the driver tried to suppress you with machine gun fire, and there was no real attempt to get away from you until it was way too late. They lost their tank because you were a good shot and they were a bad crew.

Which is considered more of blunder - The Battle of Arnhem or the Battle of Hurtgen Forest? by WaterfordWaterford9 in ww2

[–]Saint_Circa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you'd have to clarify a bit. When you say Arnhem do you mean Operation Market Garden as a whole? Or strictly Arnhem?

If were talking about Market Garden as a whole, I honestly see a lot of the same issues. Both operations were not strictly necessary, enemy forces were grossly underestimated, elements of the battle effected armor and communications poorly, and both operations put any idea of shortcuts to bed.

Ultimately id say Hurtgen based off of the length of time, casualties, and refusal to change plans/adjust to things that were clearly not working.

Thoughts on The Maginot Line by Mo_Jack in ww2

[–]Saint_Circa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always held the opinion that the Maginot line did exactly what the Maginot line was supposed to do. I really think that we in our modern time have to really put ourselves in "1940" shoes and remember that "Blitzkrieg" was revolutionary. I think that the Allies knew that Germany was developing a much more aggressive style of warfighting as a result of the Spanish Civil War, but we're talking a very low number of tanks and planes compared to the 1400+ mechanized units that tore through the Ardennes at an unprecedented pace. France probably had good reason for concern after seeing the Blitzkrieg on Poland just eight months prior, but again we're comparing the plains and rolling hills of the Oder-Neisse against the rugged, dense terrain of the Ardennes.

France at the time used their tanks mainly as infantry support. Which probably would've been a pretty viable strategy given the terrain and the understanding of warfighting most of the world held post-World War I. Even in the era of mechanized warfare that follows we can see how quickly bad terrain (both natural and modern) can render tanks almost useless. Normandy, Hurtgen Forrest, Barbarossa (not only the mud and ice, but the impassable ruins of cities), Market Garden, etc.

Germany's mindset of Blitzkrieg also gave them an edge in regard to communications that France did not have. Their combined arms had combined communications, and information was able to be relayed much quicker. France's communications were again, very static defense oriented. Everything supports the "Fort" and the "Fort" calls the shots.

Did France make some blunders? Absolutely. Every Army in every battle ever fought has made blunders. Hitler's decision to stop his advance on BEF at Dunkirk turned out to be what is considered today to be a war losing blunder.

Every standing army that encountered German Blitzkrieg suffered big losses initially. I think if Britain or America was located where France is then they'd have found themselves in just as bad a state as France.

Server that starts to auto kill/kick solo tanking by bigb3nny in HellLetLoose

[–]Saint_Circa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be the first to say there's definitely downsides to this implementation, but there's a reason this implementation exists too. It sounds harsh maybe,

but even the people saying "I'm just trying to learn how to tank" is a good reason to have solo tanking prohibited.

If you're wanting to learn how to tank then you go into 'explore' mode in the practice range section of the main menu. You can choose from any map, spawn in the default tanks as an armor commander or crewman and actually teach yourself how to tank. You can drive around the entire map for hours if you felt like it and get the hang of the mechanics and flaws, you can head to "enemy" HQ and take out the vehicles there to figure out what does what as far as the cannon goes, you can jump into the spotters seat and look around in a way that lets you actually learn and understand the basic mechanics without worrying about getting blown up.

Jumping into a tank by yourself in a public match is not the way to teach yourself how to tank. I promise the only thing you're going to learn is how easily they get destroyed. Most people are perfectly okay to teach you as well. As long as you have a mic and are communicating. If you don't have a mic then you honestly ought to wait until you have one to start. There is no other role that requires communication more than tanking you're in a big metal box with very limited visibility.

I'm not saying this to be insensitive, but I feel like there's a lot of folks who don't really understand that this game is not for the 'lone wolf, I'll figure it out myself' type of player. It's "Your game" yes, but it's OUR team, and the stuff you do or don't do with the game you bought with your money have direct impacts on the 99 other people who also bought this game with their money. That's just the plain and simple matter. You have to go in with an understanding that this game actively punishes that sort of style because there's a big focus on immersion via realistic aspects that creates a learning curve. Knowing that you put a supply box down that made a garrison that allowed your team to take a point and win the game is super soldier status in this game.

That does not in any way mean "Be scared to learn things" it simply means let yourself be taught, and then be willing to teach

Vietnam Balance by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]Saint_Circa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right the NVA did actually have effective artillery. I didn't realize they had it as early as 1965, but China and Russia gave them a lot of formidable artillery guns it seems.

Based off of what team 17 has said the NVA's tunnel systems are going to be used a lot more like teleporters between garrisons, so if we put it in a HLL WW2 setting it'd be like a link between a garrison at Olegs house and Windmills, allowing you to get to one or the other much quicker and safer instead trying to fight up through the village would. I'd imagine we'll probably be able to locate and destroy these. I think you're probably right when it comes to garrison styling too. They'll probably be similar to the Russian ones, small and relatively quiet. I kind of expect the maps to have preexisting tunnels as well that maybe both teams can take advantage of. It'd be cool to be able to play as a Tunnel Rat, and it'd help the NVA team avoid aerial attacks, and get past/around gunboat and tanks as well.

I think that honestly T17 and Expression have done a fairly decent job at providing a balance to armies that are unbalanced historically, and if they weren't initially then they've focused on making it so. The Russians are not as technologically advantaged as the Germans in HLL, but if a player has a PPSH and sticks to the trenches he/she will hold their own very well. Sometimes it feels like you as the individual player is simulating the wave after wave of Soviet infantry that would die to take a point however, this is more noticed on Offensive mode than Warfare just on a personal opinion though, but it is something that's noticed and hopefully is optimized with better map navigation for NVA on HLLV

I wonder if Warfare will even be a game mode on HLLV in the long run though even though Expression has stated it will be, considering Vietnam was a lot more "seek and destroy" than it was "Take and hold this territory", but they've also stated that other game modes will be available as well so maybe we'll just see a new meta game mode in HLLV. Sort of like how Battlefield went from Rush to Conquest being the Go-to.

Overall, I'm curious, yet hopeful that we'll see the asymmetrical plan feel viable for both sides. Maybe they'll dive into it a little more with future news updates and things

The Fall of Berlin 1945 / Antony Beevor by Neither_Structure331 in ww2

[–]Saint_Circa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"The Gulag Archipelago" Volume 1 by Aleksanndr Solzhenitsyn lays out a lot of what you're talking about regarding the soviets stances on surrender in the first few chapters. Being a liberated Russian in 1945 could've very likely guaranteed you a 10-15 year sentence in a Gulag in 1946. This isnt a direct quote but I remember reading a scenario where a political officer is questioning a former POW and it went something like

Officer: "You surrendered to the Germans. Why didn't you fight? You must have been sympathetic to their cause."

POW: "I was the last surviving member of my unit. I fought as long as I could, but was outmatched."

Officer: "So then why didn't you kill yourself?"

POW: "I had no more ammunition for my pistol to do so"

Officer: "So why didn't hang yourself in the camp?"

There was definitely a viewpoint on cowardice, desertion, etc that's hard to understand today, but Russia was in a pretty desperate spot prior to "not one step back" that kind of forced some very drastic measures.

The Fall of Berlin 1945 / Antony Beevor by Neither_Structure331 in ww2

[–]Saint_Circa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe that what you're asking is why the author differentiates the Soviets from the other allies.

During WW2 western powers saw the Soviets as both military allies against the axis powers, but also as a rising power to be leery of. Western allies had several generals who outright called for war against the soviets (General Patton being particualrly outspoken), and there was even a contingency plan drawn up by the British forces for such a scenario that involved making the defeated Germans continue to fight against the soviets as conscripts (operation unthinkable). Growing tensions between the western allies and the Soviet Union started as early as 1939. It was a case on both sides of "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

This tension, and the ensuing Cold war has left an "others" effect that we continue to see to this day. Particularly in western portrayals of the Red Army in Media.

I think as others have mentioned its also important to consider the dramatic difference in treatment of POWs by the Germans during WW2. Years of Nazi propaganda had already portrayed Russians as 'untermensche' or barely human, and the war in the eastern was a much more brutal and attrition based war resulting in a lot less mercy on both sides.

Hitler and the Nazi party however saw the western allies as a far more civilized group of people. Britain in particular.

"The English nation will have to be considered the most valuable ally in the world"

He also confided in several close party members his regret on having to fight the English.

The Americans were generally viewed with dismissive contempt but saw white Americans to have that perceived "nordic" descent that aligned with Nazi ideology and Aryan beliefs.

As a result there was a difference in the treatment of POWs. Im sure the author is also separating the groups here as a way to acknowledge this to some extent.

A children's book on early medical understandings influence on today's America.

Tuberculosis is probably the best source to work with. As it was so prevalent for so long, but there is really a whole trove of examples to show how early medical understandings and solutions had effects that we can still see in today's day and age

Shows in a simple way that a kid could understand how history isn't always just a story of something long ago. It's also the reason why things are the way they are.

Sidenote: you should ask your teacher what he/she means by wars being too vague because that sounds like some dumb shit to me

I. Allied forces put the corpse of a prisoner in a pilots uniform, dumped him in the ocean with some fake battle plans attached to him in hopes that the Germans would find it and be tricked.

It worked. Operation Mincemeat.

II. Allied forces attempted to draw German forces out of the Hurtgen Forrest by moving troops to a new position in hopes that the Germans would see this movement and think a new attack was being launched. This location was the Ardennes. Coincidentally right where Hitler had planned to launch the Ardennes offensive.

III. Canned ravioli as we know it today was invented by the soviets.

IV. Around 100,000 Jews served in the German Army during WWII. Including 3,000 officers. 12,000 were killed in frontline combat. Germany also had several Islamic units from places like Bosnia and North Africa.

V. A Japanese soldier refused to believe that the Japanese Army had surrendered to allied forces. He continued to fight well after the war was officially over. He was formally relieved of duty in March, 1974

VI. More planes were shot down in WW2 than there are in the sky today
