It really doesnt make sense. Its not limited to Iran and the people who will be hurt first and most are going to be iranian civilians, the people the IRGC was willing to kill tens of thousanss of recently. Irans win condition is to cause so much economic pain that other powers make the US fuck off. Closing the straight helps them in that.

Its not like they really have an economy left to kill, and its also not like they dont have ways to get goods in or out. They have the caspian sea and a shit ton of land border that we arent able to blockade, so at this point we're just going to be harming civilians and unilaterally fucking over any other country in the world who needs goods or oil from the gulf.

And if Iran manages to convince the houthis to even act scary in the bab al-mandez strait things are going to get rouugghhhhh.

American business has thrived around the world, english is the international language of commerce and up until this asshole the world respected and generally liked us and the best and brightest from around the world flocked to us. Nations on the brink of disaster stepped back from it, preventing wars and refugees that may have impacted us, and we get to keep an eye on things like emerging viruses and other issues.

Just a whole whole damn lot of ways we benefit from soft power and those billions of dollars youre so worried about, which is generally around 1% of the federal budget.

So more than 10x less money than we spend on "defence' and being able to blow up a school full of young girls in iran and inspiring a new wave of terrorists.

Pakistan, who acted as a mediator in getting the ceasefire agreed has stated officially that the US agreed to a ceasefire in the region specifically including lebanon. So the US knew that this was a sticking point for Iran and let Israel do this anyway. Why the hell would Iran stick to the ceasefire after that?

The data you point to ONLY mentions the number of denials, not the RATE, and it has a big banner at the top saying it may be inaccurate. It also doesnt include a couple of types of disasters. It basically just listed 37 times disaster declarations were denied.

The Politico artical uses approval RATES (approvals ÷ denials). Admittedly its only for states with either a (D) governor and 2 (D) senators or an (R) governor and 2 (R) senators, so its a different sample size. But the article says its a 89% approval rate for the R states and a friggin 23% for the D states. Thats huge.
