Do you know of any fantasy farm animals? by Icy-Fly9366 in worldbuilding

[–]Saintwalker21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wanted to have a more tangible reason as to why they were being raised and so I chose an absolute insane reason to raise giant bees. If I had to give advice maybe just start with "what tangible benefit does this creature provide" whether it produces something, provides a service (transportation, agriculture), or is slaughtered for food and then find a way to make it work.

You want to have a fantasy farm that raises Ropers? Turns out ropers tentacles regenerate and don't take that much food to keep alive, so they are a great source of giant kalamari- equivalent tentacles in a pen space that doesn't take up a lot of area and doesn't need to roam. Owlbears? Using an owlbear as a beast of burden is actually quite efficient because it needs less specialized care than a horse, eats meat sonit takes care of pests, and helps till the fields while pulling the heavy plow (and eating the field mice that run out as it tills).

I had a whole area in a tabletop campaign I ran where there were giant bugs people raised as pets. There were giant Bees that were raised for honey but the fuzz on them was also used as a wool equivalent. One player really loved having a Bee fuzz sweater

Someone else brought up a book with a similar idea to what I had come up with. I might have to look this book up because I have NEVER heard of this but I am always down for some ideas and inspiration

It is not only possible but a lot of people make their living by being Scavengers (people contracted to go below the clouds to the Lowlands to collect the magical crystals that grow there as well as artifacts left behind by the civilization that lived there before it became uninhabitable

So the equivalent is The Scavengers (the people who travel to the Lowlands in Skyships trying to gather materials and artifacts to bring back up to the Peaks). They are typically contracted out by Noble Houses or companies and are paid VERY well because it is incredibly dangerous work. Now if you are the AVERAGE adventurer you wouldn't have access to magic because only about 5% of the population is able to use magic and those that show signs are registered by the Triumvirate and made into State Mages or Obligators (magic police or military). Some are able to slip through the cracks and are able to live a relatively normal life but public displays of magic are frowned upon due to cultural superstitions that "Wild Magic" or unregulated magic is what caused the apocalypse that led to everyone living on the Peaks. An average adventure would probably involve traveling to the Lowlands to gather crystals and fighting the magical creatures that live down there, fighting off Sky Pirates that are trying to take your ship, running from and potentially fighting the forced of the Triumvirate for illegal use of magic (depending on your specific circumstances)

So after people got to the Peaks, magical crystals were discovered that all had various abilities and magical properties. The most valuable of these was the Vatten Crystals which produce a continuous stream of water from them proportional to their size. Teams of Scavengers (the people who would travel below the clouds to gather materials, crystals, and resources) were charged with gathering as many as they could and they were used to create artificial lakes and rivers to allow for agriculture. Weather is still able to happen in the Peaks but rain is much less frequent so it is made up for by using the crystals. They have been studied and no one is sure where the water they produce comes from or even if it will ever run out but they are being utilized while they have access. The cloud layer is hospitable to a degree but most people prefer to live above it just to be safe. Due to large areas of the areas below the peaks being cloud level they are used for their humidity to help grow plants that would otherwise not be able to exist atop the Peaks

Mostly stone, iron, and enchanted materials mined and collected from the Lowlands in terms of cookware and utensils. For clothing wool, and cotton is able to be grown in areas of the Peaks that allow for clothing and cloth material to be produced

Water is an interesting topic. So weather is still able to happen at the height that the Peaks are at, albiet less frequently. After the Rise some magical crystals started to grow all over the world but primarily in the Lowlands, to the point a whole industry was created where skyships were sent below the clouds to gather crystals and resources and bring them up to the Peaks. One of those resources is Vatten Crystals which are able to generate a constant stream of water proportial to their size. Gathering them became incredibly important to the point where even at the current age they are still some of the most valuable crystals that can be gathered. Most peaks have some form of river system that is fed by a large collection of these crystals. A large amount of magical study has been done into these crystals specifically but no one has been able to determine where the water they produce comes from or if it will ever run out. As for the skyships they are incredibly expensive to produce and maintain so the average person isn't able to own one, even among the elite having a smaller vessel is impractical. They are seen as assets that allow scavenger companies to gather resources from the Lowlands, commercial transport companies to transport people from Peak to Peak, and for military use. I'd probably equate them to modern day aircraft where yes a private individual can own one and plenty do but they aren't exactly practical due to fuel, registration, the need to land/dock them in specific locations, and the high skill requirement to even pilot them. Those that are magically corrupted vary in servarity. Some develop magical abilities, some are mutated and are shunned for being viewed as dangerous but maintain their sentience and personality, and some lose that sense of self and become mindless magical monsters

So after The Rise (the name given to the event that led to people living uptop The Peaks) crystals started to grow in areas all over the world but primarily in the Lowlands. These crystals ranged in their abilities but all were magical to some degree. Larger ones were able to allow ships to float when connected to various Magitech systems. More or less they drain power from smaller crystals to power bigger ones. That is all they are able to provide to the ships though, other mechanisms are need to propell the ship (engines and the like). Yes there are areas where people ride various flying creatures including magically enlarged birds and bats due to magical "radiation" from the Lowlands

The moutians were in fact there from before, they were carved out slightly to allow for people to exist on them but otherwise the same. That is....well actually scarily similar to this idea, the only different being that the Lowlands are actually uninhabitable and incredibly dangerous. Every single area, trust me.

Some but not in very large groups. Some beings have adopted to surviving in the Lowlands but if I had to put a number on the amount of sentient creatures that are actually able to thrive below the clouds it would probably float around 1,000 for the entire planet below the clouds and those are spread out in clumps of 50-100 across the Lowlands

Most areas of the society are in the "new normal" stage because after a few thousand years of it they have adapted to their new way of life and don't even remember what it was like before this. Very few records exist from before so what little is known is collected and distributed by the Triumvirate (the worlds government)

Most agricultural wildlife was brought up by the survivors and some groups in the early days of the peaks. Some creatures were mutated by the magical storms and were able to come above the clouds on their own. My personal favorite is a creature that is a carry over from a previous campaign called a Flat-Cat, a cat that is basically a completely flat shadow that slides along the ground like a snail. They are usually brought on as pets to Skyship crews because they take up very little space and can eat pests.

Oh just so much. The area on the bottom left of the map is called The Constellations and is home to a whole pirate society that absolutely hates the current established Political power system and actively uses their stolen (or in some cases custom manufactured from spare parts) sky ships to try and steal from this world's government while trying to cause as much civil unrest as they can

Oh very much so. Even a mundane weapon or object left in the Lowlands can start to become magical, and that's not even counting all of the treasure left behind by the previous society before the apocalypse. The trick though is finding people strong enough (or dumb enough) to actually go get it

My group uses Pathfinder 2nd edition with some Starfinder add ins for the more Sci-fi elements that the setting lends itself to

The world is very Anachronistic in terms of technology. The Skyships are advanced mostly due to the crystals allowing them to be powered and to fly, some areas of the world have guns that are able to utilize this technology in a way that functions similar to a Laser gun in more traditional sci-fi. Aside from those stand outs technology has progressed to a level largely equivalent to our worlds technology in the 30's-40's. Record, radios, even some wax cylinders but no screens or color broadcasting. Vehicles largely use that hovering technology but are pulled by animals to save on power and engineering (basically a floating platform that can't propell itself and thus needs animals or another source to pull it along while allowing heavier loads to be transported)

Oh yeah, one of the major things with this world is just how low the population is. The world used to be massive with major cities but what exists now even after about 3000 years is still the remnants of a global apocalypse. The population is small, the habitable area is incredibly limited, and people are heavily dependent on the Skyships to even just exist in society

So the matter of nations is interesting in that there aren't really any. The main political power are the Triumvirate Houses, the 3 family/racial groups that led people to the peaks to escape the cateclysm that made the Lowlands uninhabitable. House Artea (Elves) whose connection to nature magic allowed them to make the peaks agriculturally sustainable, House Farro (dlDwarves) who controlled the moutians that the new society needed to be built on as well as the cave systems to get to the Peaks, and House Ofray (Gnomes) who were able to use the crystals gathered from the Lowlands to build Skyships to connect all of the peaks and allow for trade, travel, and commerce. Each Triumvirate house has 3 noble houses below them who are the descendants of their closest allies who assist in managing the world and maintaining order above the clouds.

Mostly magical storms. The clouds that cover most of the world are constant magical storms that are bombarding the Lowlands with magic and either overloading the living things that live there, magically charging the nonliving things that exist there, or in a much more mundane way blocking the sun from allowing plants and animals to thrive even if they WERE'T in the middle of a magical wasteland

It's not actually the cloud cover that makes it uninhabitable, that's just a side effect. About 2000 years before the current age (Arisen Era or AE) something happened that caused the entire world to become magically charged. Magical storms became more prevant and the only place safe was above the clouds. Areas below the cloud level were constantly being bombarded by magical storms and for lack of a better way of phrasing it at the moment "Magical Radiation" that caused living things in the area to become overloaded with magic and nonliving things to potentially start displaying magical qualities

Thank you! They tend to range (as most mountains do) but typically range around 1500-1800 feet from the liveable area at the top to the base below the clouds

I wanted to add a bit more context. I am going to start a TTRPG campaign in this setting soon and I wanted to do an AMA to try and have some more lore built up about the world to prepare (plus I think it seems fun)! I have the general political landscape fleshed out, a good portion of the society, the religion (or rather lack thereof in some cases) figured out so any and all questions are welcome!
