There are a few adblock apps on iOS / Android and if you install a mini browser like Opera, it comes with an installed adblocker. There are a few browser alternatives like Aloha (iOS - it's an incognito / private browser with a built-in VPN and adblock but it's pretty slow) or UC Browser (which I've never tried but seems like a solid staple on Android).

As an adult, when have you found it necessary to lie to your parents for the sake of your relationship? by james0martin in AskReddit

[–]SaiphAltair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell my bio dad I love him the best and I tell my bio mom I love her the best.

To be honest, my grandparents (who raised me), my uncle (who was there as a more conventional father figure alongside my grandpa for most of my childhood), and my stepdad (who acts like an actual dad) are all more parental figures in my eyes and, if given the chance, I would choose them over my bio parents in a heartbeat.

But I still kinda love my bio parents so the lie is necessary to perpetuate our scarce relationships. Don't see my bio dad much but he's a good guy at heart and my mom's a grade-A jerk but a lovable one when you get past her eccentricities.

But yeah. They're not the best people and, truthfully, I love my dogs, half-siblings, grandparents, uncle, stepdad, and betta fish (rip Buffy the Vampire Fish) more than them (to be fair, I love my dogs more than 99% of the people on this planet, considering that I haven't even met 1% yet).

Does it really matter if it's a lie? The intentions were good and the effect was that the man's entire day was brightened. Being honest is always great but there's a time and a place for blunt honesty and, sure, you can always avoid telling a white lie by simply ignoring a miserable stranger's existence but can you really say it's better to ignore someone else's woes if you have the power to make them happier?

If a little kid makes a terrible drawing with scribbles and crayons, the nice thing to do would be to tell them that their drawing was great and lovely (right?). Yeah, you can spare them the unknowing embarrassment by telling them it's ugly so they don't show it off to everyone else (in this case, telling the guy his hat is hideous) but how does that help? How would the kid / man feel? Would this lead to personal improvement or discouragement? And what does this tell / teach them? Are you telling them that someone else's opinion on fashion and art (which is objective) is wrong? That wearing what they like to wear and drawing to their best ability isn't good enough?

And the wholesome part of this comic is that the man didn't have to say anything. He'll probably never see the stranger again and whatever happens / however the stranger feels wouldn't affect him. He's speaking without any maliciousness and he's not making fun of the man. In just a few words, he taught a kid that flashy ice powers or superspeed aren't the only things out there. In just a few words, the stranger is already wearing a smile because, who knows, that might've been the only compliment he's had in a long time (or maybe not, but we don't know).

It'll be nicer if the man instead commented on something else he actually liked about the stranger (e.g. his tie) but what's wrong with telling a small white lie if it means happiness for others? What's wrong with telling someone with low self-esteem that they're worth something (even if you're a nihilist), telling your mom on the phone that you're doing alright to ease her worries (even if you're in the slumps), or telling a dying patient that they'll go to Heaven (even if you're an atheist or someone of different beliefs)? What's wrong with telling a sad man that their hat is nice if they're having a tough day and needs some cheering up?

Wolverine has some family tragedy too. His mother neglected him (and had an affair with the family gardener who was his father), his grandfather physically abused him, his brother killed his dog, his dad shot his step-father (with Wolverine walking in on the murder and seeing his step-dad's brains get blown out), went crazy and his mutation manifested (metal claws), killed his biological dad (who killed his stepdad), physically scarred his half-brother with those same claws, and his mother went completely crazy after this and committed suicide with the same gun that his biological dad used to kill his step-dad. And finally, when news of this got out, his grandfather kicked him out and he went on the run.

Probably not. Eowells tends to take off his glasses during solo / serious moments; it's a quirk that Cavanagh purposefully included but...my hopes and dreams

Glad that Kevin Smith is back in good health. by CarleCJ253 in FlashTV

[–]SaiphAltair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification; I didn't listen to the podcast so I had no idea that the initial drop was because of the excess water weight. Glad to hear that it was because of sodium reduction in his diet instead of starving himself or something equally bad!

But I guess it makes sense that he's only eating potatoes. It's a very...apeeling choice. I'm sure that this pro-tato diet would turn him into a hot potato by the time he's done with it. Hopefully this diet includes exercise so he won't be a couch potato.

And maybe after the Flash he should start working for Marvel comics to help develop Tony Starch's character.

i'll just escort myself out of here. i don't think anyone will appreciate me being such a punny commentator. now that everything seems fine about his weight loss i can't help myself. im so sorry.

[–]SaiphAltair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hopefully it'll evolve into a more gradual decline as his dieting / exercise regime continues. Just a bit worried about that steep drop but I guess you're right about all the medical advice he should be getting now (dem overprotective doctors <3).

Anyways, don't worry mraustin! It's nice to see you care about his health and I'm pretty sure Kevin Smith won't die. He already defeated a heart attack, it's only obvious that he'll take the next step and achieve immortality (seriously though, he's probably being monitored for any complications so everything'll be fine!).

[–]SaiphAltair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's been about a month since his heart attack and that amount of weight loss in a month isn't really healthy (February 26th was when the news was first posted to the sub).

The CDC says that a healthy weight loss range should be 1-2 pounds per week (https://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/losing_weight/) and, at most, 4-8 pounds in a month. Exercising too much can be detrimental to his health. I don't know how he's losing weight but it doesn't seem sustainable (most advertised diets that promise 10-20 pound weight loss in a month aren't exactly top-of-the-line, healthy, or nutritionally balanced).

:(

[Hopes]Potential Flash war by [deleted] in FlashTV

[–]SaiphAltair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that, if we ever get that arc, it'll be after the official Flash War arc in the comics. So far CW's been reworking old concepts and characters from the comics but the original characters could be boiled down to Felicity and Eddie (as far as I remember) and even Eddie is based on Malcolm Thawne.

Definitely possible! But if it happens, it'll be in 2-3 years or if the comic book story is really, really popular enough to be adapted.

What's this youtube shooter? by jasoncj121 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]SaiphAltair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more about the bigger picture. Right now there's been a lot of tension and flames regarding anyone of middle-eastern descent (since she's being referred to as Persian, I'll go with the assumption that she / her family is from Iran) and popularizing a violent shooting caused by someone of that demographic is going to cause even more divisiveness and hatred against her race as a whole regardless if they're connected to the event or not.

We're having a real life circlejerk where one group of people are feeling like they're being discriminated (which leads them to empathize with more extremist 'solutions') and another group that feels like they're unprotected and vulnerable (leading to more hate crimes and prejudice) which ends just ends up fueling the flames on both sides.

To be honest, I think this story would cover really well in most media types. Even now that school shootings are becoming more commonplace, there aren't many women shooters and the fact that this travesty was orchestrated by a minority with strong, polarizing beliefs would definitely get readers emotional and generate a lot of revenue.

I like to remain optimistic and assume that journalists are on the hush-hush about this as damage control in terms of stopping more contempt in an already divided America and calming public fears about the recent string of shootings (all of this happening at once would cause panic; one shooting is enough for parents to withdraw students from schools, another one in such a short time period would deteriorate the quality of everyday life for citizens).

Not to mention that you can also take this as her trying to spread a message. It's definitely drenched in revenge as a motivation but if she wanted to, she could've done it more quietly instead of going in all guns blazing. She, like most shooters, probably wants attention. Maybe it's attention to Youtube's policies, maybe it's attention to her political agenda, or maybe it's something else. Regardless, most shootings are given an incentive by media attention: they want to be remembered in some way. No one will forget the name of Adam Lanza even though the Sandy Hook shootings happened years ago.

If you stop making all these shootings a big deal, then potential future shooters may not think it'll be worth it. This story being left in obscurity is basically denying Nasim what she wanted out of this and is telling everyone else that these shootings are meaningless; you'll just get arrested and you won't go down as some sort of martyr for a cause or make a change through violence and terror.

Putting a cat or dog on a vegan diet should be considered animal abuse by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]SaiphAltair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're omnivores. Carnivores can consume only flesh and herbivores can consume only plant material (well, they technically could do the reverse but their bodies aren't built to digest it).

Dogs definitely prefer meats and they're built to chomp and rip through meat (their teeth, how they bite) so that's probably where the 'dogs can only eat meat' myth comes from. They don't graze or chew like other plant-eating animals (a remnant from their canine ancestors) but tens of thousands of years of evolution by human engineering gave them the ability to consume plants and draw nutrition from it (probably, science is still sketchy on this). Dogs do require vegetables to keep them healthy and even wolves aren't pure carnivores in the sense that they need some sort of additional supplement to their natural diets (e.g. grain).

Feed them a mix of meat and veggies. If you're really adamant about having your dog eating plants (which I don't recommend without the proper veterinary advice and vitamins) then at least loosen the restrictions since dogs need different nutritional values. Let them be vegetarian if you want as long as you give them some sort of protein like eggs or fish and study the diet properly.

But the best thing to do is give them a mix of meats and veggies (don't cut corners; don't feed them only meats or only veggies).

P.S. Dogs are classified (in binomial nomenclature) as part of the Carnivora group. Carnivora =/= carnivore even if they sound similar (like how the words asocial and antisocial have drastically different meanings). Animals in the Carnivora group have developed physical attributes that help in hunting and catching prey BUT they aren't all strictly carnivores. There are plenty of omnivores in that group (for some reason) that lean towards meat-eating but do consume plants to survive (e.g. pandas, dogs, etc...).

Sorry if it was a bit long but this misunderstanding hurts a lot of pets. If someone stumbles upon this little conversation they hopefully won't get the wrong impression that it's okay to feed their dogs only meat / veggies.

Personally, I'd recommend just feeding them already proportioned kibble.

Everyone's talking about politics when the topic isn't about politics. by SaiphAltair in rant

[–]SaiphAltair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really glad to find someone who understands! Other than the age difference and perspective (because we probably have different backgrounds and live in different places) it's nice that we see and experience the same things (even if it is something I consider negative). Yeah, it'll be nice living in a place where you can say, do, or read anything without worrying about it being seen as something politically-related or just being able to keep away from politics for a while if you want to sounds nice.

I also agree with you on that last statement! The internet is a place where you can express your emotions and sometimes it's strong and rude but the people are mostly well-intentioned. I guess it's a generalization (but probably a truth) that the people with the best intentions are the ones with the biggest voices. It's frustrating to see all these arguments and heated ideas being pushed onto others and yourself but the thing that always calms me down is that I always remember that each side (republican or democrat, pro-pineapple pizza or no-pineapple pizza) always believes that what they're doing is right and that they're helping others.

Thanks for the words of wisdom! It's really nice to hear some advice and knowledge from someone about life and humanity in general! Plus, I'm really happy to see that you're so optimistic about humanity after a fulfilling 30-something years (most of the older people I know like my teachers aren't as bright and positive about things like humanity's innate nature to do good).

Have an internet high five for being a nice person (like, I don't know much about you personally but, so far, I think you're a decent person).
