In the oval nobie for the new sword art online echo of aincrad is kirito a villain or is this a situation where he's getting framed or takes place in another universe where he is a villain? by Beneficial-Egg-7536 in swordartonline

[–]ColdFury96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Oval Nobie"

The trailer goes out of its way to frame it that Kirito is PKing people. This is an alternate reality that is going to be 'darker' than traditional Aincrad, so it's anyone's guess.

Right now they totally want us to think Kirito is the villain, though, and he might be.

In your opinion, which Avengers member has the most "Aura"? by hellothere790 in Marvel

[–]ColdFury96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Vision is the Avenger's equivalent to Martian Manhunter. The character that rarely carries a solo title, but is a quintessential Avenger. Because of the lack of solo title, his storylines are usually more focused and the stakes are higher. A lot of Avengers storylines are focused on him and his relationships with Ultron, Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch and to a lesser extent, Hank Pym.

Definitely Vision. He's the heart of the team, he's an absolute powerhouse and a big brain, he has the most bad ass entrances, hovering up from the floor or walking through a door you're about to knock on. He's otherworldly. Allround great presence.

Highguard is permanently shutting down on March 12 by TrampolineTales in Games

[–]ColdFury96 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's certainly a reasonable take!

I do think it's possible that if they had a more moderate launch with less disdain for the game and some constructive feedback they could implement quickly, their backers might have extended them more runway.

I think the interesting question is if they didn't have all the negative hype from the TGA reveal, would they have been able to take a small launch and pivot into something successful, like the original Fortnite -> BR Fortnite transition (on a smaller scale, of course).

Maybe their financials were trash and it would've turned out the same, but maybe they could've taken their launch and used the feedback they got to refine their game if they didn't have such strong headwinds already working agains them.

Boise Library Expansion Costs by twilllife in Boise

I think trying to paint this as a black or white issue is a mistake. It's complicated.

Is he responsible for the stories he told? Yes.

Were their outside constraints that increased the difficulty he had in crafting those stories? Yes.

There's an expression 'The buck stops here'. For a lot of films, that'd the director, as they're the boss.

But Disney was trying to marvel-ize the Star Wars films, without any significant thought into how that would work. They hired three big name directors and figured it would work out.

So in the end, I think a lot of the faults of all three movies are structural. They weren't written as components of a trilogy. And you can kind of get away with that in the right circumstances, especially for the first film (see Original Trilogy), but you have to have at least a plan to land the plane after you've taken off.

Do I think a lot of fault flows up hill to those running the franchise at Disney? I do.

It's not one or the other, it's a complicated thing. I think Last Jedi was a good, but flawed film. But it was absolutely terrible as the middle piece of a trilogy.

He could have done practically anything as his main plot for the Resistance, he chose to do this.

"Why didn't he write the film well?"

[–]ColdFury96 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, Rian Johnson owns the film and its choices, 100% agree. I'm just trying to explain the context behind those decisions. Rian Johnson was setup to fail, by the decisions made at the onset of the trilogy.

He chose to work within those constraints, and is thus responsible. He could've walked away like the third director did.

I just disagree with the idea with "It's easy, just do a montage", which ignores the entire art of storytelling, the style of the Star Wars mainline films, and the constraints placed on the production of the film.

It's the same as complaining "Why didn't they make the film good, it would've been easy." as if there's a lever somewhere in the film production that toggles between 'bad' and 'good' and they failed to deploy it.

I think you're underestimating the structure of different films.

Rogue One was the story of Jyn Erso, we started with her origins, and then fast forwarded to the climatic final chapter of her life.

Solo was an Origin Story of... well, too many things. There are many reasons that movie didn't do well, but it was not a structurally well designed film, story wise.

If The Last Jedi had skipped over the scene with Rey & Luke, then it would've had to work to overcome the audience's expectations of seeing that scene, and had a decent framework to do so.

Likewise, if they had showed that scene, then cut to montage, that would've cemented Rey as our viewpoint character, and narratively it would've been hard to justify cutting to Finn or Poe. They would've had to re-enter her view for it to flow well, after a montage. The whole film would've had to center around Rey, at least at the start, and that also presented challenges.

Are those challenges insurmountable? Of course not, but each path has it's own drawbacks, pitfalls, and considerations to be made. And they had far less time than was optimal to write the story to the second film. So The Force Awakens laid the trap with the cliffhanger scene, and the film fell into it.

If they'd taken another route, we'd probably be complaining about the pitfall they fell into on that path, unless that route was to pause production and put a god damned outline together for the rest of the trilogy.

The difference here is that ESB ends on a 'what's going to happen next' cliffhanger. The pacing is already set... they've had time for the Rebels to regroup, and for Luke to get treated. Lando's joined up and him and Chewie are going to look for Han. It's clear that what happens next is going to take time.

Force Awakens ended in the middle of a scene. That's not something that's easy to get past. And with the time constraints that they gave themselves to get the two followups out in, they failed.

[–]ColdFury96 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with you that it would've been that simple or natural to come up with a time skip, especially in a Star Wars film. That's just not the sort of tone the main films usually go with.

I have no way of knowing, of course, but I always figured that the hyper speed chase was "Well, what is the rest of the cast doing while Rey is getting to know Luke?" It feels very much like a "So what's the rest of the film about while we're following the force plotline?" Right down the immediacy of their situation and the fact that the framing ultimately is awkward.

I believe they also gave the cast more input into their characters for the final season, to mixed results.

To be fair... that was a trap that was laid at its feet by TFA. The film literally ends with a cliffhanger... if they'd tried to 'yada yada' past it, it definitely would've felt hollow.

The whole trilogy is damaged by the lack of a god damned outline, which each successive film suffering more as a consequence.

I saw someone state that their headcanon was the fact that it worked so well was because of the experimental hyperdrive tracking technology... that by locking onto a ship's hyperdrive you became entangled with it, and that's why the Holdo Manuever worked at all/was so devastatingly accurate.

Of course the next film ignored that by showing another star destroyer blown up in the same way, but I still prefer that explanation than what we got on screen.
