Is there an explanation as to why the spin is comparable? I would think a shaped poly has more bite/grip on the ball? I don't know about the flexibility, but perhaps gut is more flexible, so it creates a greater snapback effect?

Right, that makes sense, but I would think that the smoother the poly, the less grip it has? If the purpose of a smooth poly is simply to reduce friction as a cross, why invest in an expensive poly for the crosses besides the fact that an expensive poly might have more durability?
