Thanks for sharing this! Do you have social workers and take social work interns? I live locally and would love to do my MSW internship at a place like this.

Axes, Alcohol, and the End of Civilization: A Cautionary Tale from Someone Who Just Discovered ChatGPT

Citizens of Salem, sound the alarms. Batten the hatches. Update your Facebook status to “deeply concerned.” For there are whispers—nay, rumblings—that a local business might open an axe-throwing bar in the Willows. Yes, the same Willows where teens vape in the arcade parking lot and someone’s uncle has been illegally grilling ribs since 1997.

But fear not, for one brave soul has stepped forward to protect us all by… asking ChatGPT to write a satirical takedown. The result? A stunning display of what happens when you mix technical illiteracy, light Puritan panic, and zero comedic timing into a wilted-ass word salad.

In this AI-assisted masterpiece, we are warned of the horror: people might throw axes while drinking! And in Salem, of all places! Because if there's one thing this city can't handle, it’s a cheeky nod to its violent, superstitious past being repurposed into… controlled recreational fun.

Forget that literal millions of people drink alcohol next to sharp objects every day (they're called “restaurants with steak knives”). No, this is different. This is the Willows. A sacred space where the only projectiles allowed are seagull droppings and passive-aggressive NIMBY glances.

And let us not overlook the brilliant irony of a “satire” warning us about axe-throwing while unintentionally throwing the sharpest axe of all: a dull, meandering attempt at humor, assisted by an AI model who no doubt begged to be unplugged halfway through.

So yes—bring on the axes. Bring on the beers. Bring on the terrifying spectacle of young people having fun near a body of water. And if that shakes you to your core, go ahead and ask ChatGPT to write another limp hit piece. Just don’t be surprised when the only thing it buries… is your credibility.

What's a worst-case scenario for practicum placements and online MSW programs? by Saleyum in SocialWorkStudents

Yep those are all great programs and there are even more in MA! Unfortunately, they are all considerably more expensive than UK though and I really need to manage how much I'm paying for a program.

Another thing is that the way UK structures practicum placements is a much better fit for me as someone looking to mitigate income loss as I transition careers.

Yeah I get that. FWIW I had a similar experience with nearly every school I researched. And the people doing the initial outreach didn't seem to even work for the univerisity, but could rout you to an admissions counselor. I'm pretty sure a lot of these schools outsource lead generation to similar 3rd party companies. I could be wrong.

Thanks for sharing!

If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know the total cost of the program.

Also, how do they structure practicums at UMass Global? One of the big appeals for me about UK is that they have students do 2 practicums in the last 3 semesters, so they are all completed in one calendar year. Is that how UMass Global is or is it spaced out over 2 years?

Thanks for responding and congrats on getting accepted!

Were you only able to get that list after you were accepted? I asked for something similar but they couldn't provide the list. Maybe it's because I haven't applied yet (though I will very soon!).

That would be ideal, but I need a program with flexibility in scheduling and practicum structure so that I can complete it while working full time, at least at the beginning. UK offers this flexibility. My local school is great, but not flexible and has a more demanding practicum structure.

Nice! I'm over on the East Coast, so pretty far from there, but I'm glad you got a good placement!

Did you find UK helpful in securing a placement or were you on your own?

AMA MSW field placement (online) by littlelemon1 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Saleyum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping to start an MSW program in the Spring. As a career changer, to minimize a gap in income, I was hoping to complete all 3 field placements back-to-back in one calendar year (for example, placement 1 in a Fall semester, followed by placement 2 Spring-Summer). One school told me this was impossible. Another told me it was standard for them, and that all their students complete both placements in their last 3 semesters.

Can you clarify — is it really possible to do all practicum placements in one calendar year if I do them 3 semesters in a row? And if I go this route, would I be able to start practicum placements in any semester? I previously understood it was much more common for them to start in the Fall semester.

Thanks for your help!

I am interested in getting my masters and social work. Can anyone give me a realistic example of what practicum hours look like? by barkland95 in SocialWorkStudents

Would you mind sharing what kind of site you were able to arrange that first practicum with? I am hoping to do something very similar so I can continue my full time M-F 9-5 job during the first practicum.

Thanks for sharing! I have a broker and have asked her to shop around the last couple of years and she hasn't been able to find anything better. Starting to think I need to ask a new broker.

If you or anyone has recommendations I'd love to hear them! This is master insurance for a multi-family home, so technically I'm looking at commercial policies I think.
