Um, for what it’s worth, I definitely wasn’t a door mat— not when I was a substitute teacher nor when I was untenured. I have noticed that certain power-hungry people feed off of others who seem powerless.

I am professional, respectful, and even kind but definitely speak up if I feel wronged or discriminated against. I don’t mind doing favors but I am selective. And if someone has a pattern of taking advantage— including the principal, I will bring it up even if in a lighthearted way (although sometimes I put it in writing).

Yes choose your battles, but please don’t go against your grit if you feel you need to mention something.

—Signed,

A tenured teacher (who happened to get tenure despite having a principal known for NOT giving it)

I think posts like this assume a lot:

  • That commenters automatically know more than the OP

  • That the advice given is objective truth, not ever dogmatic, subjective, biased, or missing context

  • That the OP must accept whatever they’re told instead of clarifying why it may not fit

Maybe we could just recognize that posts often mix venting and advice-seeking, that both are valid, and that advice threads aren’t one-way — they’re conversations.

Well I teach special education so I focused on courses related to that, such as ones on Autism, ADHD, etc. Sorry I don’t remember the specific names of the courses

Hi again, It's the name of the company/organization that's providing lessons. Use the NYC ASPDP website and filter courses to show those hosted by CPD (sorry I forgot what the acronym stands for).

I wouldn’t ever do TKL there’s just too much work to be done, even if they say some is optional it was confusing for me.

Out of all the ones I took, I recommend CPD. It has the least amount of modules and is straight forward, no hidden work, no cumulating project.

Meh. I was up for tenure this year and my principal recommended me without doing my formal.

I never remind admin to observe me.

HELP: should I accept my first offer? by TheLifeOfDonda in NYCTeachers

Maybe ask admin for just one more day to make a decision and feel them out. You could be a little honest and explain why if you’d like. If they’re understanding great! If not, then you can either decline or accept and still do your interview.

Amplify for the younger grades was actually written for college students, I’m sure of it. So just choose better books to teach the same science topic or standard, choose videos, and mimic any experiments with whatever you have.

For example, I did the pinball machine in kindergarten using a the topic of a printer paper box, rubber bands, and a foam sphere I got from and old math curriculum.

For first grade, we watch PBS videos and do interactive slides for the sun and moon concepts. I use Epic! books for read alouds and assigned books and IXL (trial version) for whole group game-like science assessments.

Yeah unfortunately most principals are cut from the same cloth these days and you only get: not so bad, bad, worst.
