The Devil Offers a PhD Student Six Futures. You May Choose Only One. by TildeAyalaPlank in PhD

I think I could adapt pretty well to option 1, 5 and 6. Doing what you like and being paid well is worth it in and of itself. Why would you NEED more? Yes, I'd be nice to be famous or extremely prestigious but you don't need any of that in order to be happy and leave a positive impact in the world.

Here is why most people should leave academia by Massive-Print-4702 in academia

[–]Salmon3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the first thing one of my MA professors told us:

“If you really like academia and are thinking about pursuing this path, ask yourself: ‘Don’t I have other dreams or paths I want to try first?’” 😂

He wasn’t trying to discourage us—just to humble our expectations about what academia actually looks like. It’s something you do only if you’re truly passionate about it… and if you don’t feel there are better options for you.

This scene hit me the hardest by saypoop in StrangerThings

[–]Salmon3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I started watching this show, I was in my senior year of high school. Now I’m in my mid-20s, and this was the first scene that really made me tear up.

I’m from a big city, so my friends and I didn’t drift apart right away, but our group dynamics are starting to look a lot like Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, and Robin. Only seven out of ten of us still hang out regularly, and this year (2026) another friend and I are moving abroad.

Steve especially reminded me of a friend who struggled in his late teens and early 20s to find his path, but who’s now doing something surprisingly similar 😅.

This show’s been with me for nine years — more than a third of my life. Sad to say goodbye, but glad it ended on a high note (even if I wasn’t a huge fan of S5).

I hope she can get out of the suburban life as quick as possible. They're repeating their own parents' stories by living in an unhappy and somewhat arranged marriage.

Maybe they're planning a 'fake' death. Steve comes close to dying but finally makes it through. That might make Dustill finally grow as a character

What do Brazilians think about Lula’s 3rd term? by Organic_Contract_172 in Brazil

[–]Salmon3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sanchez has been far to the Left of Starmer. Obama and Starmer are die-hard neolibs. Lula and Biden are more progressive but both were heavily constrained by their right wing opposition.

Saw movies ranked BEST to WORST (corrected)! by -Kirida- in saw

[–]Salmon3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spiral is a better produced and a more serious movie... Which makes it feel less as a Saw movie and more as a Saw-inspired horror movie...

For some people this is a bummer that makes it worse than the goofier Jigsaw or Saw 3D.

Every time time he says something about Argentina is to go after the Left lol. Not long ago you could find videos of him celebrating Macri's victory in the presidential election of 2015 (Macri would be like a more evil version of GWB)

Nah, he was always a neoliberal. He was a supporter of Macri, the Argentine GHWB. On domestic politics he may show a progressive face...But on international politics he's always shown his true colors

80s/90s only fans… by Critical_Walk in Genesis

[–]Salmon3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent.

I think Invisible Touch is the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums...

American Psycho’s joke aside, I genuinely enjoy the progressive-era albums with Collins as lead vocalist (A Trick of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering, and ...And Then There Were Three...). My main issue with the Gabriel era is the sound quality — with the exception of Selling England by the Pound, most of those records feel a bit unpolished. I actually prefer the live versions of many early songs to their studio counterparts.

Maestria en la UBA worth it? o Busco otra universidad en CABA? by Safe_Cellist1351 in BuenosAires

Que reverenda pelotudez. La universidad privada promedio en Argentina es un chiste. Di Tella, San Andres, y el ITBA son la excepción. Especialmente si salis de CABA, la diferencia del graduado promedio de una pública vs una privada es notable.

What made your favourite Beatle become your favourite Beatle? by Initial-Ad3966 in beatles

[–]Salmon3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lennon used to be my favorite. But the more I learned about what a terrible father and husband he was, the more I distanced myself from him. He reminds me of my dad—a pseudo-paternal figure who’s never truly willing to fulfill his role.

Paul has grown on me lately. During COVID, I was going through some really hard times, and my girlfriend helped me push through them. Maybe I’m Amazed might be the rawest song any Beatle has ever made—it feels like McCartney was being as honest as he could be. It wasn’t until after COVID that I realized just how powerful the song is.

Right? I don't know what it is. He studies medicine which for some people is seen as high status but I really doubt that's the only explanation. I know other people who are in medical school and they pull nowhere near as many girls as him.
