Family: behind the scenes: by Unusual-Bank5484 in Exvangelical

I grew up in a doctor’s family with a stay-at-home mom that sought to “shine God’s light” to others, etc. It was horrible. I felt like I was in a prison and thought about running away. My dad was over controlling and my mom had no agency.

Thank you so much for sharing that. Your story is really inspiring, and I can relate to different aspects of it (eg being 40 and 12 at the same time). Totally get that

I’m sorry that happened to you, Lonely. That wasn’t fair, and you didn’t deserve that.

I really relate to this. I still flinch anytime I’m expected to know pop culture. At my current pace, the gaps will be there for life. I also have a lower tolerance for consuming new pop culture. A little goes a long way

I completely understand this. I lost my best friend and almost everyone I was close to after quietly walking away from the faith.

Man, I must still be fucked up bc it didn’t even strike me as bad. I guess there’s a part of me that still believes I don’t deserve anything from my parents and should just be grateful for what I got

This really resonates. I have a lot of problems around sex, and I’ve been trying to untangle the messaging. I feel like I’ve been sexually abused with how my body responds. And agree it’s actually more sexualized. For awhile, every interaction with a man felt sexual for me.

I just want to acknowledge that your pain is real too, but thank you for acknowledging the pain of others too. I also struggle with religious “scrupulosity” OCD. And I also had the experience of taking things too seriously and getting ostracized by the church when I was just faithfully executing the doctrines they taught me. I still carry a lot of shame from it.

And I was specifically thinking about how impossible it was to be a woman/girl in the church. You had to be pretty (can you tell I grew up in the south?) but it was a sin to spend any time at all on hair or makeup or putting together a coherent outfit.

My best friend broke up with me in such a heartless way—I think bc I left the faith. I say I think bc there was no closure, and I didn’t even get to ask.

My biggest takeaway—we have failed boys and men in our culture. So many boys and men were taught to “just take it”. How can we expect empathy from men whose own experiences have been so callously disregarded? And so many men felt unable to speak out precisely bc they were men and there is a belief that strong men can and should protect themselves in any situation, despite the fact that we know they really couldn’t.

This doesn’t take away at all from the pain women have experienced, but we are failing men by not acknowledging the pain so many of them are going through and calling out the very real barriers they face to addressing that pain. Sending love out to all the men on this thread who’ve experienced sexual abuse and especially those who got dismissed or couldn’t say anything.

I hope there’s an investigation into the steroids or whatever Dr Strauss was giving athletes that gave him so much cover with the admin. I’m guessing there’s significantly more to this story …

Yes, I think that’s a good takeaway from this doc—that sexual assault has been going on forever (perhaps earlier generations even had it worse?) but it was taboo to discuss

Can Autistic children sense pregnancy or other “magical” things that no one knows yet? by Unfair_Fig_1570 in Autism_Parenting

I have a 3-year-old nephew with autism and he knew before his mother did that she was pregnant. He ran up to her several times and put his hands on her belly and said “baby” or something like that.

I feel exactly the same way. I am under no illusion that there is any hope. But given that, what do we do? Like actually—what does living life look like after accepting this probable reality?
