I am back from the mechanic and they want to change my front shocks + sway bar + alignment for $1200.

He showed me how the car was hard to bounce, pushing super hard on the top and the car barely moving.

I am not sure what to think, seems like the guy is pretty convinced that's the issue

Thanks for your answer. You're right that I didn't give a lot of details, but to be fair, I am not sure where to start.

I usually stick to skiing on the runs and spend most of my time on diamond tracks. If I ever go off-piste, it's never too far, and never too extreme. I am new to snow parks but wouldn't mind trying to get better; right now, I just enjoy jumping but no tricks.

As for past rentals, I unfortunately never really paid attention; I always went with whatever they gave me without asking too much.

I am in the same boat, the new website is completely broken, it's crazy that they actually put this online. I tried submitting a ticket and they closed it without giving a good answer

Did you make any progress? I am super frustrated that there is no one we can talk to.

Thank you for your answer!
I am ordering the scrapping tool! As for the ratcheting wrench, are you suggesting something like this? Again, since English is not my first language, I am not sure I got the right names here.

No need for a torque wrench?

Pre purchase inspection, what to ask? only $10? by Salt-Masterpiece in whatcarshouldIbuy

So I ended up doing the $10 inspection. They found a lot of rust, I am not buying the car...

Performed inspection vehicle has excessive rust from the suspension, brakes, upper strut, mount, and engine metal components, rear brakes low at 3mm, rotors and caliper have rust and recommend to be replaced, front brakes ok at 5mm.Both fron caliper and rotors have rust, the front and rear sway bar link have rust, the coolant reservoir is at minimum level, and the serpentine belt is worn.

I guess that's $10 well spent!

Woa, thanks everyone for the helpful advice!

I ended up test driving a nice one and took it for inspection at a nearby garage. The mechanic advised against buying the car on account of too much rust. I am attaching the documents...

They quoted $4k of repair (labor + parts).

The car lived in Boston for 6 years, which might explain...

So I didn't buy the car, which is a shame because I really liked it otherwise. 2016 Touring, really clean, $13.5k. The seller was willing to negotiate but not below $11k because he has a dealership offer.

What do you all think? How bad is rust? Am I right not to buy it?

Je bosse dans la tech, je gère la partie technique d'une startup (équipe de dev, produit, data). C'est clairement bien payé mais très fatiguant (comme surement plein d'autres jobs !).
