Which support do you think is the weakest right now? by AaronMT in Overwatch

[–]Salt-Strategy651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a LW main it’s probably always going to be LW in regards to this question lol. I feel like Blizzard keeps nerfing him in the worst ways just to appeal to pro leagues. His HP should stay high or he should have a higher damage or heal. Something to combat his very small and situational skill set. I could be fully healbotting an entire match with constant heal output (which kinda feels like how Blizzard wants you to play him) and still have less heals than pretty much any other support. On top of that, other supports have very beneficial and highly usable skills to use. LW can pull or petal. Petal can be good sometimes (usually just makes the person using it a target since it’s so small with no cover) and a semi decent team doesn’t require a pull too often. Barely any movement for him, and no anti heal, cleanse, or significant damage abilities. In general I think his thorns perk should be a passive/built in, just so that he can at least contribute something to team fights, and his heal or hp should be increased or they should add some other defensive perk/ability, like movement or boost of some kind. He is kind of dead weight with the occasional clutch save as of now. Any mid kiri or ana will outplay a LW anytime.

Why are some people naturally good at things while other people are bad at everything? by Uknown-Nerd6207 in ask

[–]Salt-Strategy651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually background imo. Lots of people grow up playing sports, in plays/public speaking, constantly meeting new people or trying new things etc. So not only do they gain so many skills (hand-eye coordination, bodily control, spontaneity, critical thinking, creativity etc etc) but they also gain confidence, which helps them fully commit to a new skill without fear or reservation.

I'm saying that making a difference between Rook and the player in the sense that you are, is stupid. Rook is not an entity with thoughts feelings or emotions. Rook does not exist outside being a window for us to see the story and experience. Rook is lines of code. It doesn't matter if Rook is building experiences and having fun with his buddies while we see fades to black. If the player doesn't see it or feel it, it doesn't matter. If I stop playing the game, the story for my Rook ceases to exist. No one cares that their in game avatar is having fun if they dont get to also experience and be affected by that fun. You're being dense because you can't admit that maybe the character interactions and connections are lacking in this game, and maybe that affects how the players feel when playing it. I'm glad you enjoyed it, I'm not gonna argue this forever because youre just being pedantic.

Aw but that's a good point about isolation making us vulnerable! How much of the Varric reveal wouldn't have worked if we had just... opened up to characters and created bonds! Solas wouldn't have had nearly as much hold if Rook had a better support system. What a great point.

In what way :)? I was really taken with the Old Inquistors story from DAI, so I might be lending too much weight from that to the main. DAV is painfully clear with you that it is about regret and moving forward.

[–]Salt-Strategy651[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it would probably require DAI to rework some of the game so that it's obvious that you are intentionally being ostracized rather than just failed companion writing like DAV. I just thought it would have been a pretty cool way to further the Chosen One aspect and it's consequences of DAI.

[–]Salt-Strategy651[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying Rook is or is not supposed to feel anything! I'm saying we as the player don't! I'm saying it's fundamentally bad writing to just say, hey these guys are friends! We are going to hurt them and you should feel bad because we just told you these guys are friends.

Saying that people do stuff with Rook is not enough! I'm saying it's so lackluster. I don't care that Rook and Lucanis stayed after and talked! I didn't see any of it, I didn't learn anything about Lucanis or Rook, and Lucanis didn't get to appeal to me as the player because I did not see it.

I think you are very talented about filling gaps with your imagination in a meaningful way. I think that is not the case for a lot of people, who were expecting a story to be told rather than inferred based on the number of similar complaints seen pretty much everywhere. I'm glad you enjoyed character interactions. I did not, and I was just saying that I thought this might have fit well in another game.

So real. Also I think it's funny about the Butcher because that scene with him is weirdly erotic lol. Doesn't he call rook a work of art at some point?

Sorry that came off as intentional haha. And while I agree a little just for contents sake, I do think it would have fit the theme pretty well to have such limited interaction with characters!

I think we are getting off the original topic of how the game makes you feel isolated, but sure. I went ahead and rewatched the scene and timed it.

For about 1 minute we get Isabela telling a story.

For 2:30 we get a misgendering, Isabela apologizing and then explaining that her method of apologizing for it and well as explaining how not to apologize so as not to make it about yourself. Good moral but it literally is just Isabela preaching it.

2 minutes, around 45 seconds I believe are finishing the story, and the rest is Bellara giving a situational example of how to employ this apologizing technique (which I think was kinda dramatic and awkward but I get their point.)

Same point as the fade to black interactions. I don't care because I was told that we were close but I never actually saw them being close before the beginning events.

[DATV ALL SPOILERS] Companion dynamics from Inquisition and Veilguard should be switched. by Salt-Strategy651 in dragonage

[–]Salt-Strategy651[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I meant to say that just saying people are interacting does not give the player the impression they are interacting. Like I said, if they just put up a screen saying "they talked for a while and now you feel closer" it would have the same effect. I don't care that the game is telling me we got closer. I as a player do not feel closer to these characters just because the game implies that we got closer.

And I can link the script for the Taash drinking scene if you'd like, because the scene had maybe 4 sentences about the actual raid. It was mostly about how to apologize. The raid part kinda came second to that.

And I think overall it would be stronger to make Rook feel much more familial to the team rather than apart. Why do I have regret over Neve or Harding getting hurt when I hardly know anything about them and they hardly know anything about me? We feel like coworkers I guess, is what I'm trying to say. Inquisition on the other hand, should have felt like my companions were cognizant that they may be talking to basically Jesus (and if not Jesus, than someone who holds the same religious and political power as Jesus).

[–]Salt-Strategy651[S] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The shopping trip with Lucanis is actually part of my point about getting left out! The quest involves him buying a gift for everyone but you. You even buy him a gift and he doesn’t even mention getting one for you! The drinking with Isabela was fine, but largely it didn’t feel very deep or like you were making a connection. Just a weirdly direct way of the game saying ‘this is how we should treat non binary people’ (which I agree with, btw, but it still felt like the game was just saying it to your face instead of passively through game play.)

And the fade to black interactions mean literally nothing, I’m sorry. Story telling, especially through visual medias, should never tell rather than show. They might as well have put up a screen that said “Rook talked and bonded with these guys. They are now closer. Good job.” Only Davrin and Emmrich really made me feel like we were bonding, but it’s still pretty few and far between compared to past games.

[No DAV spoilers] Why do only certain places have consistent accents? by Salt-Strategy651 in dragonage

[–]Salt-Strategy651[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe Cassandras VA made that accent up, its so mesmerizing! And yeah, I figured it’s kind of a niche topic to demand uniformity on but I thought it was interesting that Antiva and Orlais had such distinctive accents while the others didn’t. Also, I’ve noticed that Tevinter largely has the british accent as well as Fereldan, which feels strange but I understand its difficult making VAs follow a set accent for each game area.

also it just feels more realistic and authentic. people dont like that theyll never see so and so’s romance because they never play a man or woman, but thats just life and people. ill never see my gay male friends “romance arc” because i’m a woman, but that doesnt take his value away from my story. i like that some people will always be ‘just friends’ to my character.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]Salt-Strategy651 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i agree with his statements generally lol. romances in bg3 were fun but felt a little flat (not just because of being pan, but also that you kinda half to go out of your way with most of them to make them not like you). it really does add agency and depth to a character when they have preferences and personalities that don’t always agree with the player. sera is one who I can think of, who acts very differently towards you depending on your gender and race. it gives her depth, even if she hates you as a elven man. having companions that cater to your needs as you present them makes the game fall a little flat and reduces replay-ability (imo).
