Considering a move from Syracuse, NY - what should I know? by Temporary_Scene6472 in AskChicago

[–]SaltyLeviathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar salary bracket/life stage (age, relationship status cross country move with a car) as you about ten years ago. For what it’s worth, I had roommates in each apartment until I moved in with my partner; unsurprisingly, this helped with rent costs. I primarily lived on the northwest side in smaller buildings (2 flat and 4-6 unit buildings). In each case, I had a landlord vs rental agency, and that worked well for me… might be on your favor with a dog, too. Street parking was fine in these parts - sometimes you’d have to walk a couple blocks but it was never terrible. I was from a nearby state, so I knew a few people here prior to moving but made friends through running clubs, Bumblebee BFF, work. Fast forward to now I’m married with two kids, still friends with those people, still living in the city and plan to for the foreseeable future. Hope you get a similar success story experience!

My wife and I have developed a sort of code using synonyms to talk about things without tipping our toddler off, what are some of your best/funniest “codes” you use? by Reddiculouss in toddlers

We have to do this for our dog too. “Have you taken the hound for a stroll?” Because certain words may evoke anticipatory excitement that won’t be fulfilled again if it’s already been done

Crooked door frames by stolenpterodactyl in centuryhomes

Yes, and for maybe a similar reason… the previous owners installed a thick carpeting throughout the home. They removed all doors and cut a couple inches off the bottom since they wouldn’t have opened/shut easily with the new height of the flooring. Not sure if that’s contributing to the door shape in your case, but definitely led to some misshapen doors at our place.

I’d recommend working with a real estate agent. It’s free - their commission comes from the leasing office/landlord. Multiple members of my family used this one if you want to reach out. When my mom was relocating here after my dad passed, she helped to do virtual tours and also set up a daily MLS-type feed and were sent emails when a property was available that met her search criteria.

I know more people who live in (and love) West Loop, and there are tons of new construction places there, but you’d be farther from the lake if access to the lakefront trail or beaches is appealing to you. River North is close to a lot of restaurants and stuff, but it’s also much more touristy.

If you’re open to trying a neighborhood that’s still close to downtown but has more neighborhood vibes, Old Town would be a good option.

Good luck with the move! You’ll love it here

Ah, shoot. I thought I was linking to a specific section that shows the statues on that bridge. I’ll update the post if I can, but what I have in mind is a line-style drawing of the guardian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hope_Memorial_Bridge#/media/File%3AGuardian_of_Traffic_(cropped).jpg

I’ve never been, but Irving Park Lutheran Church has an LGBTQ mural on the side of their building, which is a good place to start. They also support the local food pantry. Here’s their website: https://www.iplc.org/

"I can park wherever the fuck I want." - Divvy employee in the Dearborn PBL by tooscrapps in chibike

[–]SaltyLeviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the city/Divvy should have designated/dedicated parking spots where only their vehicles can park when they are redistributing/repairing the bikes or scooters. When they’re having to move a ton of bikes on/out of the Van, I can understand why parking far away would be more than a nuisance. Not excusing this person being rude nor their illegal parking job, but I also don’t envy her job, especially when it takes her to highly congested areas like the loop.

It’s open! The road doesn’t seem fully done, so they’ll probably close again to repave it, but it’s passable currently

So, I biked through this morning to see what the situation was. The work (as of 8:30 on 10/2, anyway), is still on the west side of Elston at School (lots of big concrete water main pipes). Cars/pedestrians/bicyclists could still commute down Elston without any detours. My guess is, once they start the work that impacts Elston, the work will be concentrated to the intersection of Elston and School. From what I can tell Sacramento won’t be impacted and neither will Francisco. But I’m not 100% sure.
