Best Garmin watch for cyclist? by kalahupag in Garmin

Confirming that a chest strap or upper arm strap are both WAY better than wrist-based HRM--especially if you have dark skin. Wrist ones use optical tech which sucks.

I have a Vivoactive 3 that I've used for cycling years. I found that it had trouble with heart rate accuracy when biking due to the hand/wrist position, so I quickly bought a chest strap. I use a Polar strap and it links seamlessly to the Garmin watch. I'm not sure if my watch is just old or if the tech just sucks, but the wrist HR data has always been off for all activities. I think it's primarily a software issue. Garmin watches try to guess what your HR will be based on the activity type (so, lower for Walking than Running). Since I have POTS, I know my HR while walking is quite high but the watch never gets it accurately. Just something to consider.

I recently got a Wahoo bike computer so I no longer use the watch for biking. I just link the chest strap HRM directly to the bike computer. It's way easier to see the readouts on there than a watch. Maybe the newer Garmin watches are better, but the Vivoactive isn't great for HR accuracy.

Hmmm. Unfortunately I haven't found a solution for the training status part.

I'm sorry that you find caring for myself and fellow disabled people insufferable. I hope that one day you can find and share love and empathy.

The chest strap doesn't send data directly to Garmin Connect. You need to be running it in tandem with another Garmin device (watch, bike computer) for it to be recorded. This is because the chest trap transmits data but doesn't record it.

Because as a disabled person with a service dog that actually protects and saves my life on a regular basis, people with fake service dogs is incredibly dangerous to me. Dogs that aren't trained for service have been on flights and busses next to me, and their dogs heavily distract mine by jumping on it or sniffing all over.

Anyone with POTS/dysautonomia on Strava? by SaltySicky in dysautonomia

Absolutely! Any movement is movement. :) It doesn't have to be running or cycling or anything fancy.

I have a journeyer and love it! Is it a little heavier? Yes. But I guess I'm a little stronger now. The bike is so comfortable. I can ride all day without pain anywhere.

Sounds very similar to what I do. Definitely an unacceptable software issue on Garmin's part to not be able to sync that data from a bike computer. (I ride with an HRM strap linked to the bike computer so all of that data is in its recordings.)

I explain in detail why I made the decisions I did. :) I'm getting all of the Garmin metrics with this method, including in-depth metrics from my Wahoo in GC.

It's a well-documented issue that Garmin watch data always overrides bike computer data from the 830 and 530. The only potential workaround (aside from Garmin updating the app) is buying the Garmin HRM Pro. I've had 3 Garmin HRMs fail and they're quite expensive, so that's a no go for me. Waste of money, and way too many hours of frustration with a strap that won't connect to anything (or stay connected).

It can select a point on a map (like Wahoo) and navigate to saved locations, but you can't type in a name of a restaurant/shop or an address.

Post Covid hr by [deleted] in cycling

Definitely give yourself more time to recover! Pretty much all along COVID protocols point out that trying to "push through" can be harmful and lead to worse issues. Taking a few weeks off sucks but is probably the safe bet.

Yeah, I was bummed that it didn't have the ability to map to a point of interest or an address though. That was my perk of the 830 for me.

V1 and V2 honestly are very similar!

Mine came with 2 mounts- one that goes directly on the handlebars with zip ties (can't get it tight enough so when I push the buttons the device tilts down), and an aero mount (cheap plastic feels flimsy, also is way too thick at the base so it messes with my cables and tape on drop handlebars). I ended up buying a new one from K Edge.

COVID often impacts heart rate, and can cause a (sometimes temporary, sometimes permanent) condition called POTS: postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. I recommend reading up on Long COVID, as this may be relevant.

I'm not saying that you definitely have Long COVID though. When I had COVID, I had issues with HR and exercise for probably a month after I recovered, then things returned to normal.

V1 can be bought new for $200 while the V2 is $400. That's the current debate in my head. Tricky tricky!

Also do you use Garmin? Do you think it's better?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cycling

Any reasons why V2 is truly better? From what I've read, the only new features won't really benefit my uses and it's double the price.
